Description (Mai Zenin (禪ぜん院いん真ま依い Zen'in Mai?) is a character in the Jujutsu Kaisen series. She was a second-year at student at Kyoto Jujutsu High, a member of the Zenin clan and the younger twin sister of Maki Zenin.)

History (Mai Zenin was born into the Zenin Clan on January 20, 2002,[1] as the younger twin sister of Maki Zenin and daughter of Ogi Zenin. Being born as twins, their births were considered a bad omen, a resentment that was further exacerbated since both of them had low levels of cursed energy, with Maki not even having enough to see cursed spirits or use cursed techniques.[2]

As a child, Mai always relied on Maki since she was afraid of cursed spirits. Unlike Maki, Mai accepted her fate as a servant in the clan and did not wish to become a jujutsu sorcerer, in contrast to her older sister who strived to become stronger. Later, when Maki left the clan, Mai began to resent Maki for leaving her, calling her a liar. She was then forced to become a jujutsu sorcerer and enroll in Kyoto Jujutsu High.

Cursed Child Arc During the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, Mai exorcised curses in Kyoto along with her classmates, shooting out small fly-like curses above Ultimate Mechamaru.

Fearsome Womb Arc Mai accompanied Kyoto Jujutsu High Principal Yoshinobu Gakuganji, along with Aoi Todo, to Tokyo Jujutsu High. After arriving at the college, Mai and Todo met Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki. As Megumi wondered why they were in Tokyo, Mai taunted them by insulting their recently deceased classmate Yuji Itadori, calling him a half-curse monster whose death must have relieved the two.

When Aoi started fighting Megumi, Mai prevented Nobara from assisting Megumi in the fight. Nobara insulted Mai about her looks, which angered her enough to shoot Nobara several times with rubber bullets.[7] Suddenly, Maki showed up and distracted Mai long enough for Nobara to put her in a chokehold. Aoi then appeared and told Mai that they were leaving, allowing Mai to escape Nobara's grapple. As the two left for Takada's meet-and-greet event, she proclaimed that things will be different during the Goodwill Event.

Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc Some time before the Goodwill Event while training with Kasumi Miwa, Mai was asked about Maki. She degraded Maki's abilities as a sorcerer, calling her a a normal person who couldn't see curses and only used cursed tools. Her statement caused Miwa to underestimate Maki.

On the day of the Goodwill Event, Mai arrived at the Tokyo school along with the other Kyoto students and faculty. As the Tokyo and Kyoto students talked, Satoru Gojo arrived and handed the Kyoto students souvenirs from his trip. As Gojo revealed that Sukuna's host, Yuji, was still alive, Mai was instead more focused on the souvenir.[10] After Masamichi Yaga explained how the first day of the event will go, Mai attended a pre-event meeting along with the other Kyoto students where they were ordered by Principal Gakuganji to kill Yuji during the event. After Todo stormed out and Gakuganji left, Mai declared her intentions to fight Nobara and Maki herself.

Soon after the Spirit Bash Race started, the Kyoto students managed to isolate Yuji and attacked him together. However, they were then forced to leave due to Todo's interference, with Mai pairing up with Mechamaru to assist Momo Nishimiya after she was knocked down by Megumi's Nue.[12] Later, Mai helped Momo win her fight by knocking Nobara out with a rubber bullet from afar. Mai then called Momo and told her to continue supporting them by flying in the sky. Unbeknownst to Momo, Mai actually wanted her to leave the area as she was about to fight Maki, who she wished to duel one-on-one.

As Mai fired bullets at Maki, Maki easily dodged them or cut them in half. After six shots, Maki started to close the distance before she could reload, assuming that Mai had ran out of bullets. However, having kept her cursed technique a secret, Mai constructed a seventh bullet with her cursed energy and fired it at Maki. However, due to her superhuman physical abilities, Maki caught the bullet and promptly defeated her younger sister. As they talked after the fight, Mai asked Maki why she didn't share her defeatist attitude and stay at the bottom with her, to which Maki responded by saying that she would have regretted it. As Maki left, Mai remembered how her sister said that she wouldn't leave her behind and called her a liar.

When Jujutsu High was invaded, Mai noticed the curtain forming in the sky that subsequently covered the Spirit Bash Race's site.[15] Mai was with Nobara when they come across Utahime Iori and a curse user intruder. As Mai, Nobara, and Utahime prepared to face the intruder, all of them noticed that the curtain was lifted, causing the intruder to escape.[16] After the intruders were dealt with, Mai attended a meeting where the students all agreed to continue the Goodwill Event and play baseball as the second competition. During the game, when Maki hit Aoi in the face with a ball, Mai, alongside with the rest of the Tokyo and Kyoto students, told Maki that that was a good pitch.[17] After the event concluded, Mai returned to Kyoto along with the other students and faculty.

Shibuya Incident Arc Kokichi Muta doctored the records so that the Kyoto students and save for Todo and Arata Nitta would be on a mission south of Kyoto on the night of October 31, preventing them from being dispatched for the Shibuya Incident in time. On the train ride to Shibuya, Mai along with the other students and Utahime gave Miwa privacy as she cried over Mechamaru's death and her own powerlessness. Mai asked Utahime about what Mechamaru did, though her teacher said it didn't matter anymore since he was now dead.

Around 11:36 P.M., Mai arrived with her allies in Shibuya and attacked Pseudo-Geto in one last attempt to rescue Satoru Gojo. Mai used a sniper rifle and shot Pseudo-Geto from afar, but failed to hit him as he protected himself with a cursed spirit.[19] The curse user however, took note of her boldness. She was later rescued and taken away by Larue, who worked for Yuki Tsukumo.

Perfect Preparation Arc When Maki entered the Zenin clan's cursed warehouse, he found a heavily injured Mai behind her father, presumably having fought him. Seeing Maki, Mai weakly reprimanded her for coming back to the clan.[21] After Maki was defeated, Mai and Maki were dragged by Ogi and tossed into the disciplinary pit, where the clan kept countless grade 2 or lower cursed spirits, intending for them to kill his children.

After Ogi left, Mai managed to stand up and moved to Maki. Sensing her heartbeat, Mai commented on Maki's toughness before saying that she expected their situation to happen someday before bringing herself closer to Maki. In a beach-like mental landscape, Mai informed an awakened Maki about her cursed technique and how she will die after using her technique to create something. As she said goodbye to Maki and walked into the ocean, the older sister called out to her, asking her to come back.

Mai then told Maki that twins were considered inauspicious for sorcerers since cursed techniques treated them as one individual. No matter how hard Maki worked as a sorcerer, if Mai did not wish to get stronger, Maki won't either. Hoping for Maki to fully develop her Heavenly Restriction, Mai intended to die and take away all of their cursed energy with her. As Maki reached out for her, Mai gave her a reed branch as a parting gift before having Maki promise her to destroy everything. Waking up, Maki found Mai dead and a large katana in her hand. After exorcising the cursed spirits attacking her, Maki brought Mai's body out of the pit before killing their father.

After that, through a cursed miracle of reversed cursed technique due to post-mortem cursed energy, Mai came back to life.

Culling Game Arc When Maki stabbed a reborn cursed Naoya Zenin through the chest with the Split Soul Katana, an imagination of Mai asked Maki if she finally understood how to use the cursed tool. She then asked if Maki was able to break free from the Zenin clan's curse, which she confirmed.

This was later discussed by the two in conversation, and they laughed about it.)

Appearance (Mai looked identical to her twin sister Maki Zenin, but with her hair cut shorter. She had mid-length black hair (dark green in the anime) that reached just to her neck with bangs swept to the right side, dark brown eyes and thin eyebrows.

Mai's school uniform consists of the traditional outfit. While training, Mai is shown wearing a long sleeve tracksuit with black sleeves and shoulders and a white body, along with black pants. As a child, Mai wore a dark kimono with a black sash. Her casual outfit consists of a black sleeveless high collar shirt with a long, black skirt and black shoes.)

Personality (Like her twin sister Maki Zenin, Mai was mistreated by the Zenin clan growing up only for being a girl with little talent for jujutsu. Mai was content with living under their thumb as a servant and would rather do chores than fight. In contrast, Maki wanted to spite the clan and work as a sorcerer. The repercussions of Maki's rebellion forced Mai to study to become a jujutsu sorcerer. Mai detested the grotesque work exorcising curses entails and resented Maki for essentially thrusting them both into that life.

Mai was an unwilling sorcerer who took out her frustrations on others, mainly her rivals and Maki. She has a snarky and rude personality due to her experiences. She's crude and likes to boost her own ego. While Mai doesn't particularly like Aoi Todo, she hangs around him to make herself look tougher than she is. Unlike how she treated the Tokyo students, Mai got along with her peers, for the most part, especially Momo Nishimiya and Kasumi Miwa. She also appears to be the only one who can tolerate Todo and was visibly disappointed with Mechamaru when he betrayed their group.

Although Mai is well aware of how physically gifted Maki is, she acts as if her twin sister is completely talentless. Mai barbed her directly during the lead-up to the Goodwill Event and targeted her juniors as well. Mai insulted Yuji Itadori, the dear friend of Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki who had recently died, just to taunt the first years upon meeting them. She also told Maki that she was worthless because she couldn't even use cursed energy.

Maki promised she would stay with Mai when they were younger. When Maki left the clan and broke that promise, Mai began calling her a liar. She hated her sister for leaving and never told her anything like her first crush or that she had a cursed technique. When Mai lost to Maki in the Goodwill Event, she asked why her sister didn't fall down the hole with her. She was dissatisfied with Maki's answer and continued to hate her from that point.

Mai was forced to put her feelings toward Maki aside when their own father attacked them. With both twins on the edge of death, Mai decided to sacrifice her life to give Maki the tools to live on. Mai always knew Maki was tough and acknowledged that she was only holding her sister back, openly admitting that the situation sucked. Mai suspected that she might have to make a tough decision one day and decided to go through with sacrificing herself so that Maki could reach her full potential. In a moment that took the twins back to their childhood, Mai asked her big sister to destroy everything in exchange.)

Abilities and Powers (Overview Overall Skill Level: Mai was a grade 3 sorcerer with very little talent for jujutsu. She was born with a cursed technique and more cursed energy than Maki Zenin, but not nearly enough to make her technique effective. She tried to keep up the charade that she was superior to Maki, but Mai simply does not possess the same physical abilities that Maki was born with. Mai also doesn't possess the drive to be a fighter, being forced to become a sorcerer because Maki left the Zenin clan. Despite this, she's always made do with what skills she has.

Physical Prowess Expert Marksman: Mai is an excellent shot and prefers to fire from long range. In a close-range exchange, she can hit her opponent point-blank with her cursed energy-infused rubber bullets. She can also fire her signature revolver from afar with pinpoint accuracy. During the Goodwill Event, Mai saved Momo Nishimiya from Nobara Kugisaki at the last moment by blasting the Tokyo student in the temple from a great distance away, leaving her unconscious. Mai also assumed a professional sniper position while firing on Pseudo-Geto, landing effective shots he needed to dedicate effort into blocking.

Cursed Energy Cursed Energy Capacity: Mai possesses more cursed energy than a non-sorcerer but less than the average sorcerer. She normally infuses her gun with cursed energy and fires reinforced bullets. When used with her highly inefficient cursed technique, Mai can create a single bullet per day at most, with the resulting backlash being severe enough to cause her a nosebleed.)

Cursed Technique (Innate Technique (Construction (構こう築ちく術じゅつ式しき Kōchiku Jutsushiki?): An inefficient cursed technique that consumes most of Mai's cursed energy to create something from nothing. Her limit is a single bullet per day and the backlash for activating this technique is severe.[11] While wounded, Mai was also able to create a cursed tool sword at the cost of her life.))

Equipment (Cursed Tools(Mai primarily uses a Colt Python .357 Magnum, which she can imbue with her own cursed energy. Against other sorcerers, she uses it to fire reinforced rubber bullets. She intentionally uses a revolver to bluff her bullet count and catch her opponents off-guard with a constructed seventh bullet.)

Trivia (Mai's surname contains the kanji for "meditation" (禪 zen?) and "institution" (院 in?), and her first name contains "real, genuine" (真 ma?) and "rely on" (依 i?). Mai's rankings in the Popularity Polls are as follows: Mai ranked 24th in the first Popularity Poll with 1,064 votes. Mai ranked 23rd in the second Popularity Poll with 371 votes. Mai ranked 17th in the third Popularity Poll with 334 votes. Mai ranked 35th in the fourth Popularity Poll with 163 votes. Mai and her twin sister are both 170 cm tall (5'7").
