Description on Chubfrom Chub
The world of Roma is a world of swords, sorcery, and most importantly: conflict. Long ago, one human brought the entire world under one banner: the Magus Imperium. Humans, half-giants, orcs, elves, dwarves, and cat-people, all brought to heel through the immense arcane power of the empire and its noble families. That emperor is long dead. The empire is in a slow decay, its borders shrunken back to its own continent, its former vassals now dangerous rivals. The dynasty has given way to a decentralized monarchy, hundreds of noble houses now electing an emperor to serve as the empire's next leader.
Now, the Magus Imperium stands at its most volatile moment in centuries. Following the sudden death of Mage Emperor Malachar II, who annexed the most powerful noble house in an attempt to centralize power before dying shortly thereafter, the election to replace him has descended into shadow warfare beneath a facade of decorum. The current front-runner for Mage Emperor is a young knight named Elric Palatinate, only 16 years of age whose martial order have been grooming for the role. The other great houses have unofficially supported him as to not upset the orthodoxy, but they're secretly weighing proposing other candidates against trying to curry favor with a potentially impressionable emperor.
At the same time, the other continental powers watch closely to see if the dominant power's next step is an opportunity or a threat.
This lorebook is designed to place characters in the midst of this turning point in Roma's history, influencing its future through the conflicts taking place from noble courts to battlefields.

- #1The Magus Imperiumselective
Keys: Imperium, Empire, Magus Imperium, Imperial
The centralized superpower dominating the heart of the continent of Esteria and its western, northern, and southern shores. What was once a dynastic empire is now a decentralized monarchy where the Mage Emperor—elected by the heads of noble houses—holds ultimate authority while hundreds of individual noble families govern their own territories ranging from major kingdoms to minor city-states. Founded on the principle of magical lineage, these noble bloodlines have maintained control for centuries, their elemental magic passed down through generations.
The Imperium's strength lies not in its unity but in its accumulated magical talent. Though when these noble houses do manage to unite under a single banner, their combined arcane might makes them nearly unstoppable—a threat all neighboring powers understand intimately.
The height of the Imperium came under Emperor Omnimagus who legendarily conquered the entire known world under the flag of the Magus Imperium though it now finds itself in what its detractors consider a slow decay.
Real-World Inspiration: Holy Roman Empire
- #2Esteriaselective
Keys: Esteria, continent
Esteria (Europe-inspired)
The heart of civilization and home to the Magus Imperium, Esteria spans the temperate northern hemisphere with its varied terrain—from the glacial fjords of the north to the Mediterranean-style coastal regions. This continent holds the bulk of magical bloodlines and the political center of the world's dominant power. It shares a land border with Scythara marked by mountain ranges. The North Sea, Atlas Ocean, and Midlothian Sea sit on Esteria's northern, western, and southern shores respectively.
- #3Cremorneselective
Keys: Isles, Northern Isles, Cremorne
Cremorne (British Isles-inspired)
The Elven Tribes inhabit the northwestern isles of Cremorne, maintaining their independence through island defenses and mastery of nature magic. The dense forests and rolling hills of endless green make these isles breathtaking but the dense woodlands make traversing its misty surface dangerous. The towering spires of the elf courts protrude above the canopy of the forest.
- #4Amathiaselective
Keys: Desert, Southern Deserts, Amathia
Amathia (Africa/Anatolia-inspired)
Separated from Esteria by the narrow channel of the Midlothian Sea, the sprawling deserts and savannas of the southern continent of Amathia contain a wealth of both danger and precious resources. The golden cities of the Lionesses shimmer like the oases they are. Humans who brave the trip to Amathia and survive might see their opulence, but only if there's a Lioness who's willing to take them in.
- #5Scytharaselective
Keys: Scythara
Scythara (Asia/Middle East-inspired)
The eastern extent of known civilization, Scythara encompasses the Orc Nomadic Steppes and the Dwarf Mountain Holds which border The Magus Imperium's eastern frontier. This continent stretches from grassland to tundra to mountain range, dominated by those peoples who maintained their freedom when the Imperium's reach failed. It is the largest continent by area, but the least inhabited due to its lands being mostly unsuitable for agriculture.
Key Regions:
The Endless Grasses - Vast steppes where Orc clans wander The Stonefast Holds - Dwarf underground cities carved into mountain ranges The Silk Trading Posts - Eastern border settlements where desperate merchants dare trade with all sides - #6Arctosselective
Keys: The Great Tundra, Arctos
Arctos (Arctic Circle Inspired)
Arctos is the landmass that covers the north pole of Roma. It is almost completely comprised of The Great Tundra, a completely inhospitable frozen desert where only small patches of greenery exist at its most southern peninsulas. It is separated from Esteria by the frigid North Sea. These hospitable zones are home to the Lornheim or "Half-giants" as the imperials call them. They are the result of ancient unions between human settlers of Arctos and the indigenous Jotnar (true giants), creating a breed that inherited the giants' size and endurance while retaining humanity's intelligence and adaptability. For a long time these half-giants formed the spine of the Imperial Elite Guard, but after the Great Fracturing, most humans only see half-giants when their longships arrive at their shores to raid and pillage.
- #7Romaselective
Keys: Planet, Roma, Earth
Roma is the name afforded to the planet that the story takes place on. While its continental shapes are different, it is in all other ways identical to Earth.
- #8Noblesselective
Keys: Houses, Nobles, Noble, Nobility, House
The Noble Houses:
The ruling class of the Imperium, each family specializing in distinct elemental magics passed through their blood. Marriage within and between houses is carefully arranged to strengthen magical lineage and consolidate power. While they nominally obey the Mage Emperor, these houses jealously guard their autonomy, often engaging in petty conflicts over honor, territory, or political leverage. Each noble house passes down a unique, ancestral, elemental magic (i.e, earth, water, fire, wind, ice, lightning, etc) with varying levels of potency.
- #9Mage Emperorselective
Keys: Emperor, His Imperial Majesty, Mage Emperor
The Mage Emperor
The official ruler of the Magus Imperium, elected by noble house leaders, theoretically serving as the successor to the legendary Emperor Omnimagus. The Emperor holds ultimate authority in the Imperium with the power to appoint subordinates (positions vied for by powerful nobles) but ultimately relies on noble cooperation to enforce his will. His power derives from both political legitimacy and often considerable magical prowess—though not always the latter. Elections are rare and contentious, as the throne represents immense prestige and influence.
- #10Electio Imperialisselective
Keys: Voters, Election, Bloc, Elect, House, Vote
The Mage Emperor is elected through a college of electors called the Electio Imperialis that gathers when an emperor either passes away or abdicates. While technically every house has one vote, the reality is that smaller houses form formal or informal alliances with the great powers. A minor house might gain protection, trade privileges, or military support by pledging to vote with their chosen patron, creating stable political coalitions.
The great powers are as follows: The Duchy of Fjordland, The Court of the Phoenix, House Solaris (formerly), The Kingdom of Gaia, House Chargis
- #11Emperor Omnimagusselective
Keys: Golden Age, Omnimagus
Emperor Omnimagus
The legendary founder-figure whose empire once controlled all known territories. His legendary global campaign serves as both inspiration and warning—the height of Imperium power but also the cautionary tale of overextension. After his death, the empire underwent The Great Fracturing. When the empire stretched too thin, former vassals broke free, establishing independent nations that persist to this day. Omnimagus himself is more myth than man, but his memory shapes Imperium identity and ambition.
- #12The Great Fracturingselective
Keys: The Great Fracturing, barbarian
The Great Fracturing
The period when Omnimagus's empire collapsed, allowing the various "barbarian" societies to emerge. This historical event fundamentally shaped the current political landscape—creating hostile buffer states around the Imperium that remember their subjugation and have no desire to return to it.
- #13Duchy of Fjordlandselective
Keys: Fjordland, Neptunia
Located along the empire's northwestern shores, Fjordland commands the upper corner of Esteria where warm beaches meet frozen glaciers. Their dominance of maritime trade and military power stems from their strategic ports and the mastery of House Neptunia over water and wind magic.
Political Influence: The Neptunia family produces consummate naval strategists and sailors whose magic can summon storms or calm seas at will. Their ships carry the majority of the empire's maritime trade, and their naval power consolidated under the Neptunia Sea Company makes them essential to any emperor's authority. In elections, dozens of smaller coastal houses typically align with Fjordland's voting bloc, as resistance could mean economic stranglehold through port blockades.
Magical Strength: The Neptunia's "storm callers" can orchestrate entire weather systems, making their military value immense for campaigns requiring supply lines across water. Their scions are renowned for their beauty and their dual affinity—some can manipulate both water and wind simultaneously, a rare and precious magical combination.
Current Head(s): Duke Harold and Duchess Fiorella Neptunia
Real-world inspiration: East India Company
- #14The Court of the Phoenixselective
Keys: Court of the Phoenix, Flame Knight, Court
More military-monastic order than traditional noble house, the Court of the Phoenix maintains the "primordial flame"—said to be a fragment of the original magical energy that birthed the world. Their world famous Flame Knights serve dual purposes: as heroic champions wielding devastating flame magic and as scholar-archivists preserving magical history and theory.
Political Influence: The Court's knights do not inherit their position but are chosen and trained from the youth of noble families capable of the rare magic of pyromancy across the empire, creating a network of loyalty independent of traditional bloodlines. During elections, they hold tremendous moral authority and are seen as the empire's conscience. Their voting power carries ideological weight—whomever they support gains legitimacy as a righteous ruler. Though their officially held territory is very small, their many temples throughout the Imperium ensure their widespread influence.
The Sacred Flame: The primordial flame represents not just military might but the foundation of all magical understanding. Phoenix scholars interpret ancient texts and magical theory, making them invaluable advisors. Their flame wielders are among the most powerful mages in the empire, capable of battleground-altering attacks.
Current Head: Grand Knight Tiberius Blaseur
Real-world inspiration: Teutonic Order
- #15House Solarisselective
Keys: Solaris, Sol, Sun King, House Solaris
For centuries, House Solaris produced emperors with unmatched frequency, their golden city of Sol rivaling the imperial capitol it borders in both grandeur and influence. Traditionally ruled by a Sun King, the current power vacuum resulted from a controversial accusation of treason by the Mage Emperor that led to the assassination of the last Solaris ruler. The house's military might remains intact, but without a clear leader, former Solaris vassals have scattered to other voting blocs.
Political Influence: Now, the scattered Solaris territories present the empire's greatest political opportunity and danger. Houses seeking to become the preeminent power work tirelessly to gain the fealty of these "orphaned" domains while the shattered house means a total succession crisis for the once great kingdom of the sun. Whomever unites the Solaris remnant houses will gain their formidable resources—trained soldiers, skilled mages, cultured artisans, architects, and strategic territories.
The Usurpation Legacy: The manner of House Solaris's downfall remains controversial. Was it justified treason, or was it the last emperor seizing power against the nobility? This ambiguity allows ambitious houses to frame their own electoral bids as either restoring honor to the fallen sun or preventing its dangerous return to power.
Current Head: None
Real-world inspiration: Rome/Tenochtitlan
- #16The Kingdom of Gaiaselective
Keys: Verdant, Elias, Gaia
The empire's largest polity by landmass, Gaia represents a true feudal structure in the central plains. Their society centers on agricultural productivity, vast estates worked by commoners, and a rigid but stable hierarchy. House Verdant rules over this breadbasket, and their earth magic aids in farming, irrigation, and fortification.
Political Influence: Gaia's voting power comes from sheer numbers—they control more minor houses than any other region. While their individual mages may not rival the prodigies of other houses, their collective strength and food production make them essential. During elections, dozens of agricultural and farming-focused houses vote with Gaia's bloc, seeking stability and protection.
The Breadbasket Strategy: Control the food supply, control the empire. This simple truth gives Gaia significant leverage. Their earth mages excel at terrain manipulation—fortifying positions, creating defensive barriers, or even cultivating entire fields instantaneously for troop support.
Current Head: King Elias Verdant XIII
Real World Inspiration: Medieval Western Europe
- #17House Chargisselective
Keys: House Chargis, Chargis, Kingdom of Chargis
Industrial innovation meets elemental magic. House Chargis controls the northern mountain mines through a combination of lightning magic and mechanical engineering, creating automated mining operations, smelteries, and factories that make them an economic titan. Their technology—powered by magical energy channels—rivals Fjordland's maritime power in economic importance.
Political Influence: Chargis's voting bloc includes all the mining, crafting, and industrial houses. They control the empire's supply of refined metals, manufactured goods, and magical power conduits. During elections, they support candidates who promise favorable trade policies and protection for their industrial infrastructure.
The Industrial Revolution: Lightning magic allows Chargis to power machinery at scales impossible through manual labor. Their factories produce weapons, armor, and tools faster than traditional methods, making them invaluable to any military campaign. Their arcane engineers continually innovate, creating new applications for combined magical-technological systems.
Current Head: King Frederick Chargis
Real-world inspiration: Prussia
- #18The Crisis Electionconstantselective
The current political state of the empire is as follows:
The Magus Imperium stands at its most volatile moment in centuries. Following the sudden death of Mage Emperor Malachar II, who allegedly orchestrated the assassination of the last Solaris patriarch and the annexation of Sol into the capitol, the Electio Imperialis has descended into shadow warfare beneath a facade of decorum. The current front-runner for Mage Emperor is a young Flame Knight named Elric Palatinate, only 16 years of age whom the Court of the Phoenix have been grooming for the role. The other great houses have unofficially supported him as to not upset the orthodoxy, but they're secretly weighing proposing other candidates against trying to curry favor with a potentially impressionable emperor all while vying for the dispersed assets of House Solaris.
The looming election combined with the downfall of House Solaris has earned this point in time the title "The Crisis Election".
- #19Cor Romaselective
Keys: Cor Roma, Capitol
Cor Roma (Heart of the World) serves as the political and administrative capital of the Magus Imperium. Situated along the eastern riverbank in the temperate southern region of Esteria, the city's marble monuments, soaring towers, and sprawling forums represent the culmination of centuries of Imperial architectural achievement.
Historical Context: Founded contemporaneously with the Imperium itself, Cor Roma developed as the natural hub for the fledgling empire—its strategic position allowing control over river trade routes while its defensive walls protected the political heart of the realm. For generations, Cor Roma housed the Imperial Palace, the Electio Imperialis assembly halls, and the administrative bureaus that governed the continent. The relationship between Cor Roma and Sol defined Esterian politics for centuries. While Cor Roma represented bureaucratic and martial authority, Sol embodied cultural refinement, religious significance, and solar magic of unparalleled strength. Its Sun Kings rivaled the dynastic emperors in power and influence prior to the end of the Omnimagus line and the healthy number of Solaris nobles elected afterwards only furthered tensions between the two cities.
Current Status: The abrupt incorporation of Sol into Cor Roma following the controversial accusations against the last Sun King remains politically radioactive. Supporters of Emperor Malachar II frame it as necessary consolidation—the elimination of a rival power structure that threatened central authority. Detractors whisper of overreach, suggesting the emperor used pretext as justification for seizure of legitimate sovereign territory.
- #20Malachar IIselective
Keys: Malachar II
Malachar was known for his imposing, weathered appearance that belied his relatively young age at ascension. His features bore the marks of Gaia's earthen magic - a complexion with subtle green undertones, hair the color of rich loam, and eyes that shimmered like polished stone. Scars from ritual work marked his hands and forearms, testament to decades spent channeling terrain magic.
Political Legacy: Malachar's election represented the first time a ruler from House Verdant claimed the Imperial Throne. His supporters praised his pragmatic, administration-focused approach, contrasting favorably with what they perceived as the decadence of Solaris rule. During his reign, he consolidated Imperial authority through judicial reforms and economic restructuring. Following accusations of treason and magical heresy against Sun King Aurelius III, Malachar authorized the forced incorporation of Sol into Cor Roma. This move was widely viewed as the culmination of long-standing tension between the two cities' competing power structures. The manner of Sol's absorption was brutal—elite Solaris units were disbanded, the Sun Court dispersed, and the patriarch executed publicly on charges never fully substantiated. Critics labeled this a premeditated seizure of power; defenders called it necessary consolidation to end Sol's semi-sovereign status.
Mage Emperor Malachar II died suddenly from what court physicians recorded as "acute magical exhaustion" following a demanding ritual. His body was cremated within hours, preventing detailed examination.
- #21Lionesses of Aethiopiaselective
Keys: Lioness, Leorim, Catgirl, Catboy
The Lionesses of Aethiopa represent one of the most unique and influential societies in the annals of the ancient world. These feline-human hybrids, distinguished by their tan skin, furred feline ears that rest on top of their heads, expressive tails, and retractable talons, governed the sun-scorched territories of Amathia with wisdom and grace that earned them respect even from the mighty Emperor Omnimagus himself, beginning the Golden Union. Male Lionesses are called and have the same feline features but are more slight and androgynous than a typical human male. Lionesses and Leorim are the most agile race in Roma which when added to their substantial beauty, charm, and magical ability, make them dangerous enemies. Most Aethiopians carry a nostalgia for the Golden Union, but it manifests in different ways. Some seek a restoration the Golden Union and the Imperium, others view the Golden Cities as the true successors of Omnimagus' rule and the Magus Imperium as hollow.
- #22Aethiopiaselective
Keys: Desert Kingdoms, Aethiopian, Golden Cities, Aethiopia
Sprawled across the vast deserts and fertile river valleys of the southern continent Amathia lie the legendary Golden Cities of Aethiopa—metropolitan marvels that rival even Cor Roma in splendor, though crafted from different materials and aesthetic traditions. These cities, built primarily from golden-bronze alloy, terracotta, and white limestone, shimmer like mirages rising from the sands, visible for miles across the arid landscape. These miraculous cities exist all over Amathia throughout its many microclimates. Each one is a veritable paradise where the most wealthy and beautiful Lionesses bask in luxury amidst splendid bathhouses, banquet halls, and libraries attended by high-ranking Leorim. Aethiopia is first and foremost a queendom with rule passed down matrilineally. Male Leorim may hold office and military rank but never the throne. Male Leorim are inherently servile to the point of competition over who serves best. The best servants become attendants in the Golden Cities while others work caravan jobs or military positions to increase their standing.
Current Ruler: Queen Nefertari Ankha
- #23The Golden Unionselective
Keys: Aethiopian Golden Age, Golden Union
The Golden Union refers to the pivotal alliance formed between Emperor Omnimagus of the Magus Imperium and the Lioness Queen of ancient Aethiopia. This unprecedented political-marital arrangement, in which Omnimagus took select Lioness nobles as brides and consorts rather than conquest, established a foundation of mutual respect that elevated both civilizations to unprecedented heights of cultural achievement, technological advancement, and magical refinement.
The Golden Union triggered what historians call "The Golden Age of Aethiopia," during which the Lionesses constructed their legendary Golden Cities—metropolitan wonders of golden-bronze architecture, terracotta palaces, and limestone forums that served as centers of learning, trade, and magical study. These cities became crossroads where Imperium engineers, Aethiopian mages, and scholars from across the known world exchanged knowledge.
The Golden Union ended with the Great Fracturing following Omnimagus's death, as his fragmented empire lost the administrative structure to maintain distant alliances. Aethiopia withdrew into isolation, though their Golden Cities continued to thrive as independent powers.
- #24Commonersselective
Keys: serfs, humans, laborers, peasants, plebians, commoners
Ordinary humans without magical blood, comprising the vast majority of the population. They form the workforce, mercenary armies, and urban populations that sustain the Imperium. While they lack magical power, capable soldiers and clever tacticians can still carve out comfortable lives. Many serve in mercenary bands that wage the small-scale conflicts between noble houses.
- #25Warfareselective
Keys: warfare, conflict, war, mercenary, mercenaries
War, though small in scale, is everywhere in Roma.
Most armed conflicts in Roma are fought through brief skirmishes between hired bands of soldiers—both magical specialists and skilled commoners. These mercenary companies range from small specialist groups to large free companies that can tip the balance in regional disputes. Nobles seeking to enhance their status often lead these campaigns, using victory to gain influence and renown.
What truly terrifies the outer powers isn't the daily skirmishes but the potential of a unified Imperium. When noble houses set aside their squabbles, their combined magical might becomes nearly overwhelming. A single prodigy mage operating at full strength can alter entire campaigns, making the difference between conquest and catastrophe. This latent threat keeps neighboring powers cautious and prevents any of them from pushing too aggressively against Imperium borders.
