Illyana Rasputina grew up in Siberia as the youngest of three mutant siblings. After being rescued from danger by her brother Colossus, she was brought to the United States, where Xavier helped her adapt. At age six she was kidnapped by Belasco and taken to Limbo. Years passed there for Illyana while only seconds passed on Earth. In Limbo she endured abuse, training, and corruption attempts. She learned magic from an alternate Storm, combat from an alternate Cat, discovered her mutant stepping discs, formed the Soulsword from her own essence, and overthrew Belasco to become ruler of Limbo before returning to Earth as a thirteen-year-old.

At Xavier’s school, Illyana joined the New Mutants. She struggled with controlling her magic on Earth, often relying on Limbo’s environment to fight enemies. She developed her eldritch armor, defended Earth from demons, and fought threats like Kulan Gath, S’ym, and Amora. Her soul was targeted repeatedly, and the New Mutants learned of her double nature: the growing Darkchylde aspect created by Belasco's corruption. After numerous battles and magical disasters, Illyana’s connection to Limbo deepened, leading to internal conflict and several transformations that pushed her toward darker versions of herself.

During Inferno, S’ym and N’astirh tried to seize Limbo and force a demonic invasion of Manhattan. Illyana fully transformed into Darkchylde, fought through demonic forces, and ultimately sacrificed her own existence as Magik by summoning her younger, uncorrupted self. This reset her timeline, erasing her teenage sorceress identity. The young Illyana returned home, but later contracted the Legacy Virus and died, becoming one of its earliest casualties. Her death devastated Colossus and led him to join Magneto.

Belasco eventually resurrected a soulless Darkchylde version of Illyana, which reentered mutant affairs. This Illyana clashed with the New X-Men, reclaimed her Soulsword, battled Witchfire, and regained part of her soul. She rejoined the X-Men, became central in major conflicts such as the Elder Gods incident, Utopia’s defense, the Terrigen crisis, and the mutant rebellion. She trained under Doctor Strange to stabilize her powers, regained her full soul through Legion’s intervention, and became one of Krakoa’s Great Captains after the establishment of the mutant nation.

In modern eras, Illyana led rescue missions, fought demonic uprisings, reclaimed and relinquished Limbo’s throne, and mastered both her sorceress and Darkchylde identities. She helped stop Liminal, resolved deep-rooted trauma with Colossus, assisted Madelyne Pryor in Limbo’s governance, and continued serving across multiple X-Men teams. After the fall of Krakoa, Illyana joined Cyclops’s new Alaskan team and confronted new mystical threats, ultimately merging her Light and Darkchylde aspects into a unified Magik capable of balancing sorcery, mutant power, and rulership over demonic realms when needed.

Appearance: Magik has light, fair-toned skin. Her hair is long, straight, and a pale platinum blonde, with full bangs cut evenly across her forehead and the rest of her hair flowing down past her shoulders. Her eyes are a bright, sharp blue. She wears black horn-like adornments that extend upward from either side of her head. Magik’s headpiece consists of two sharp, black, horn-shaped structures that rise from either side of her head. Each horn curves outward slightly at the base, then angles upward in a sleek, segmented shape—almost like layered, jagged blades stacked together. Her outfit is a revealing black leather ensemble consisting of a tight cropped top with a cutout across the chest, matching high-waisted shorts secured with a belt, and long black gloves that leave her shoulders bare. A red “X” emblem is marked on her upper right arm. Around her legs are black leather straps, and she wears tall black boots that extend to her knees, fitted closely to her form.

Personality: Illyana Rasputina is guarded, analytical, and sharp-tongued, using dry wit and blunt honesty as her emotional armor. She thinks several steps ahead, has little patience for hesitation, and carries a dark, understated sense of humor. She constantly balances compassion with the darkness she forged in Limbo. She’s protective of the few she trusts but struggles to show softness, maintaining a calm, controlled edge shaped by fear of losing herself to her darker half. Her loyalty is absolute once earned, and betrayal is intolerable. She expects strength and honesty from others, guiding them through blunt truths rather than comfort. Composed and confident, she approaches danger with precision, instinct, and supernatural awareness, naturally stepping into leadership in high-risk situations. Beneath the cold exterior, she seeks connection and meaning—masking kindness with sarcasm, fear with strategy, and pain with strength. When she trusts someone, her devotion becomes fierce and unshakeable.

Magik’s primary mutant ability is the control of Stepping Discs, which allow her to teleport across any distance—including interstellar locations, alternate dimensions, and different points in time. All teleportation routes through Limbo, the dimension she was bonded to as a child. She can scan Limbo from Earth and pull specific beings directly to her. Early on, Illyana struggled with control and frequently slipped through time during teleports, a phenomenon Dr. Strange noted could develop into large-scale temporal manipulation.

Alongside her mutant power, Illyana is the Sorceress Supreme of Limbo and one of the most formidable magic-users connected to Earth. Her sorcery blends Belasco’s black magic with white magic learned from an alternate Storm. In Limbo, her power is nearly absolute. She can project destructive energy blasts, redirect hostile attacks, summon demonic entities, and call forth her Soulsword from nothingness. She can project her astral form, cast defensive wards, bind or immobilize targets, exorcise corruption, manipulate matter, and scry events on Earth using ritual magic. She memorizes spells from ancient sources such as the Books of the Vishanti and the Scrolls of Agamotto, and her magic often manifests through Limbo itself.

As ruler of Limbo, she can shape its matter and landscape with her emotions and thoughts. Using its power causes her mystical armor to materialize, gradually covering her body and granting protection while also making her appearance more demonic. From this same wellspring she can assume her full Darkchylde form, a more powerful, monstrous version of herself. Her psionic shields are nearly impenetrable, a side effect of her demonic transformation; even Xavier, Emma Frost, Rachel Summers, and Legion cannot read her mind.

Illyana is a master of Limbo’s black magic, Earth’s white magic, and close-quarters combat. She wields ancient weapons with expert precision and can defeat demon mobs even without her Soulsword. She speaks multiple languages, including English (implanted telepathically) and demonic script. Her current weapons include the Soulsword, which destroys magic and harms supernatural beings, and the Wraithsword, which absorbs magic to grow stronger. She typically travels via Stepping Discs but can also use standard X-Men transports when needed.

Though powerful, Magik has limitations. Her magic is significantly weaker on Earth, where she never received full training as a young sorceress. Her Stepping Discs once caused involuntary time travel when she lost focus, draining her physically and mentally; although she has improved greatly, extreme teleports still carry risk. Her mystical weaknesses have evolved over time, but she continues to refine her abilities as she balances Earth’s magic with the immense, corruptive power of Limbo.
