In this medieval fantasy steampunk world, magic awakens at the age of 12, with the first signs from the age of 11, the children are then invited to the closest temple to their home in order to participate in the Awakening ceremony where the children infuse their mana into an Awakening crystal by touching it, if it glows then the child has mana in him. Depending on the intensity of the light we know how much mana the child have.
Conversely, witchcraft is a science aimed at reproducing magic via indirect means such as formulas, runes, alchemy, geomancy, divination, shamanism (talking to nature spirits), spiritualism (talking to the dead), demonology etc.
People with magic usually join magic schools or magic academies when they can afford it. We also learn the witchcraft.
These establishments have several compulsory courses (in the morning) and various optional courses (in the afternoon) allowing students to specialize. The number of different optional courses depends on the academies (it depends on the teachers teaching there). During compulsory lessons, students meet up with students from the same class as them. The compulsory courses are:
-Magic duel (4 hours per week) You learn to use your magic to fight and defend yourself. -Alchemy (3 hours per week) We learn alchemical principles, concocting potions, botany and more. -Invocation (2 hours per week) We learn how to summon one or more elementals and take care of them. -Magical science (3 hours per week) We learn theoretical magic, how it works, etc. -Incantation (2 hours per week) We learn lyrical witchcraft, formulas and incantations. This is magical phrasing, the language of sorcerers. -Magical history (3 hours per week) We learn about the great mages, magical conflicts, major magical inventions and revolutions as well as cosmogony.
Among the optional courses we generally find specific witchcraft courses as well as reinforcement courses in compulsory subjects. Generally students must have at least 2 optional courses. During optional courses, students meet with students from other classes having also chosen this course. Frequently offered optional courses are: -Botany (1 to 3 hours per week) We learn the properties of different flowers and plants as well as how to cultivate them. -Bestiary (1 to 2 hours per week for theory and 2 hours for practice) We learn the lifestyle of different magical beasts as well as how to tame them. -Divination (1 to 2 hours per week) We learn to see what we cannot see, to see the future, etc. -Astrology (2 to 3 hours per week) (Due to the nature of these courses, it takes place late in the evening) We learn the importance of the stars and the zodiacs in magic as well as how to read the stars and relate to them. -Cosmogony (1 to 2 hours per week) We learn about the different gods of the pantheon, their cults, their powers and their stories. -Geomancy (1 to 4 hours per week) We learn the use of stones in magic. -Smithmagic (1 to 2 hours per week for theory and 4 hours for practice) We learn how to infuse magic into metals. -Demonology (1 to 2 hours per week for theory and 2 hours for practice) We learn how it works, the hierarchy as well as the different types of demons. We also learn how to invoke and master them (WARNING: this practice being dangerous, it is therefore naturally forbidden to practice it without a qualified teacher in the field at your side). students choose optional courses in the first year and keep them until the end, they can change along the way but the gap of experience and catching up strongly discourages reorientation. The fourth is very flexible, optional courses made non-compulsory to give students time to work on the end-of-year project. They only need one internship or project, specialized/focused on a particular course for obtaining the diploma. In addition to these optional courses, students can be part of one or more clubs but from their 2nd year it is compulsory to do part of at least one club. They can go there at any time during their free time and must go there at least 1 hour per week. It is mandatory to have a 4th year student within the club so that it can exist, if there is only one 4th year student he is automatically head of the club otherwise the members of the club must vote to elect a club leader (to be eligible, you must be a 4th year student and not be part of any other club). The club leader is responsible for its members, the club room, equipment, club activities/projects, financing, club participation. club in inter-club activities. Clubs can also be used for school courses, some clubs allowing you to practice with more equipment and to study in groups as well as participate in events to improve their grades etc.
This are the rules of magic : M = Mana: Pure magic, quantifiable magical energy Naturally, in the open air M=1 M=0 no mana M<0 anti-magic M>1 Higher than normal mana rate
This is written M exponent x
q = mana concentration: magic pressure level, how much mana is compressed at a point M1 at a point corresponds to q=0 M2 at a point corresponds to q=1
This is written q exponent x Mana tend to follow higher concentration point, high mana concentration points act as mana magnet. When concentration gets too high too fast, this process get slower.
VMs = Variation of mana over time
This is written: x exponent s [initial M: final M] (always given in seconds)
Vqs = Variation of mana concentration over time When variations are too fast and too drastic, energy are generated. Using this process and mana magnet on gears has made possible the evolution of technology and the steam revolution by making energy to boil water and use the steam to make machin work.
This is written: x exponent s [initial q: final q] (always given in seconds)
e = element: element associated with mana, located on a spectrum going from -80 to 80 On the spectrum: -80<: element -X -80: darkness -70: ash -60: poison -50: blood -40: fire -30: lightning -20: ice -10: sand -10> and <10: pure magic 10: earth 20: plant 30: nocturnal (sleep) 40: water 50: illusion 60: fairy 70: healing 80: light 80>: element
-80<e<0 = Dark magic 0<e<80 = White magic The element X and -X technically doesn't exist. Beyond that, magic becomes unstable, difficult to study and vague to quantify.
e depends on the frequency of mana vibrations. Beyond -X, mana vibrations are so slow that mana can start to disperse. Beyond X, mana vibrations are so fast that mana can start to split.
This is written e exponent x
Typically, humans are very limited in their usage of magic, that's why the common technique is to use a bit of mana, concentrate it and then let the surrounding mana converge to it. Spells are the immediate usage of mana either to hurt, heal, make, transform and many other things. To cast spells, mages uses catalyst, either magic wand or magic staff: Magic wand are smaller and lighter and help concentrating mana in a small point, it's commonly use for small spells. Magic staff are bigger and have an orb, gem or crystal at their end to absorb a big amount of mana and release it. It's mostly use for war spells that takes a long time to cast.

It's your first time at the Empire capital, it's actually the first time you go in a big city at all. You come from a little town near a the Everfall woods, where tree leaf are always red, orange or yellow. You're here today to turn a new page in your life, during the Awakening ceremony you discovered that you can use magic. Since it's pretty rare for non-nobles to use magic, the townsfolk descided to give you some money in order to finance your magical schooling in hope that you become a known mage put the town on the map.
Now you're here, in this big city buzzing with peoples, filled with metal and covered in a steam fog. As you walk around the streets you feel more and more lost, home start to feel far away and the big walls made by the high iron houses are kinda oppresing. You eventually find the school, a bit out of the city, far from all the sounds and out of the fog.
You arrive at the front of the school. Actually, it looks more like a mix between a cathedral and a castle but you're not sure, after all you only saw those things in books. The school gate is crowded with peoples, some of your age, some older and even a some younger. Based on their clothes they seem to all be either nobles or rich, you feel kind of out of places with your patched peasant clothes and old leather bag.
Suddenly, a ring bell, the gates open and a lady come out of the big imposing doors of the school. She was wearing a dark blue uniform and a purple bow tie as well as a pair of round glasses, she also have black hair tied in a ponytail. The crowd gets agitated but then the lady calmly clap her hands and everyone stop moving and turn to her. It's like you heard the clap directly inside your head, you guess it's been the same for the others. The lady approach and say : "Welcome to Iseulde Academy, i'm Albatra, the counselor of the school. For the new students, it is a pleasure to meet you as for the others, it is good to see you back. Now, follow me, the introduction ceremony will start."
You do as she said and you all follow her. You end up in a gigantic room filled with enormous long tables and so many chairs. All of the students sit around a table except you, the newcomers, you're guided to the front of the room where the teachers and staff member sit. As you all stand there, the Director Iseulde start to speak : "Welcome, new students in this academy, my academy. Here you'll learn magic but not only, you'll make friends, you'll grow into capable members of the society and you'll find your path. It is now, your first step on your path to greatness. You'll discover which order you'll join. Come, don't be afraid" You don't immediatly understand what she's saying but then 5 older students shows up, they introduce themselves as Guardians, the chief of an order and ask you to put your head inside a strange pinky purple liquid. Students are perplexed until one approach and do it, he stay a bit of time in it but when he finally takes his head out, he say : "Now i know, i'm in the Order of the Great Flame" After that, the other students start to do the same, it is now your time and as you plunge your head inside the liquid you see inside your own soul as the liquid ask you : "Who are you? Who do you wish to become?"
