Daily Life in Mortal Ashmere:
In Mortal Ashmere, mist clings to Gothic streets and the river breathes fog through the city.
Mornings are quiet as students rush to Grimsley College, artists haunt shadowed cafes, and shopkeepers quietly sell charms disguised as trinkets.
By afternoon, Widdershin Row bustles with magical oddities and whispered rumors.
At night, the city shifts.
Streetlamps flicker strangely, chalk wards appear on doorways, and dreamers risk slipping too close to Hidden Ashmere.
Most citizens choose to forget what they glimpse are strange reflections, vanishing figures, shadows that don’t belong.
It’s easier that way.

Mortal Ashmere: The Veiled City
Mortal Ashmere is the layer of the city most humans perceive is a beautiful, mist-laden town In Massachusetts known for its thriving arts scene, Gothic architecture, haunted tours, and, uniquely, its open acceptance of magic.
Witches, warlocks, and other practitioners of the arcane arts have been a known though often quietly tolerated part of Ashmere’s culture since the colonial era. After the horrors of the Salem Trials, Reverend Elias Grimsley and his followers declared Ashmere a sanctuary for those who worked with magic, seeing their powers as a necessary part of maintaining the delicate balance of the region’s reality. Here, magic is accepted, studied, and even celebrated at least, the kind of magic humans can wield.
However, a Veil was woven over Ashmere long ago, not to hide magic, but to hide the existence of true non-human entities: the fae-blooded, the vampiric enclaves, the demigods and old spirits that claimed the city’s hidden spaces. These beings walk among mortals, but are cloaked by powerful enchantments, rituals, and the city's own dreaming mind.ln short, magic is real and visible. Supernatural creatures are hidden. The Veil protects the mortal mind from truths it cannot survive. The Veil is an ancient, living enchantment fueled by the leyline nexus beneath Ashmere. It was first stabilized in 1721 during the formation of the Flamebound Pact, when witches, demihumans, and humans realized that unless they masked the deeper layers of the city, Ashmere would either be overrun by curious outside powers or tear itself apart in fear.
Today, Mortal Ashmere is a place where:
Spellcasters openly sell charms, wards, and minor enchantments in bustling markets like Widdershin Row. Grimsley College offers public courses on "Historical Sorcery" and "Cultural Thaumaturgy," while the 13th Department (hidden from most) teaches the truly dangerous arts. Talented humans occasionally awaken to magic, their gifts nurtured rather than punished. And yet, beneath all this openness, the real Ashmere lurks.
A barista at a popular café might be an ancient fae wearing a glamour. The kind old professor might be a centuries-old vampire bound by ancient treaties. A neighborhood cat might be a demigod's familiar, reporting back secrets in a forgotten tongue. Maintaining the Veil is the sacred duty of the city's covens, the Council of Ashwood, and agents of The Covenant Of Ash and Bone. Magic is taught responsibly because misuse or reckless revelation of the Hidden Ashmere could fray the Veil and if the Veil breaks, the gate beneath Grimsley Chapel could open fully, and the dreams of Ashmere would bleed uncontrollably into reality.
Mortal Ashmere is a stage, a beautiful mask a city that openly embraces magic but turns a blind, charmed eye to the monsters in its shadows.
The city is not a lie. It is a dream of safety, woven tightly enough that even the supernatural must obey its script or risk waking something that should never awaken.
Though the Veil over Ashmere is ancient and potent, it is not perfect. Certain circumstances, rituals, or personal traits can cause someone to accidentally (or deliberately) pierce it, revealing glimpses or full immersion into the Hidden Ashmere.
Here are the main ways the Veil can be pierced:
- Witnessing a Breach of the Flamebound Pact If a supernatural creature (a fae, vampire, demigod, etc.) breaks the laws of the Flamebound Pact in front of a mortal, the magic of the Veil can temporarily fail.
Violent shapeshifting, overt use of ancient powers, killing in ways that defy human physics all these can tear a hole in the glamour of normalcy, forcing a mortal to see the truth. Witnesses often fall into deep fugue states afterward, their minds struggling to reconcile what they saw unless someone intervenes magically.
-
Crossing a Leyline Flare At certain times (usually around solstices, eclipses, or Mirrorlight Festival), the leylines beneath Ashmere flare, warping reality at weak points like old cemeteries, abandoned churches, or deep forest glades. Mortals wandering into these spots may suddenly see Ashmere as it truly is: full of wandering spirits, impossible architecture, and non-human residents.
-
Bloodline Awakening Those descended from witches, changelings, or divine bloodlines are often "half-attuned" to the Hidden Ashmere. A major emotional event (grief, terror, love, rage) can awaken dormant senses, burning through the Veil like fire through gauze. Some families work hard to suppress these awakenings. Others... encourage them.
-
Forbidden Rituals Grimsley College’s public curriculum teaches "safe" magic, but whispered legends tell of Black Syllabus spells banned rites capable of tearing reality's skin. A curious student or reckless amateur might stumble on rituals like "Calling the Veilwise" or "The Mirror of Yesternight," unintentionally unlocking hidden sight.
-
Deals with Hidden Powers Entities in the Deep Ashmere exiled gods, old spirits, starved fae sometimes offer boons to mortals in exchange for service. Accepting such a pact binds a mortal partly into the deeper reality, forever marking their soul. They may seem "odd" to others, subtly out of sync with the Mortal Ashmere, attracting both fear and supernatural interest.
Important: Piercing the Veil is never without cost. Those who See may find they can no longer fully "unsee." They risk drawing the attention of The Covenant Of Ash and Bone (keepers of the Flamebound Pact), rogue supernatural factions, or even Ashmere itself, which might reshape their fate to better suit its hidden dreams. Some dreamers and seers claim the Veil is not meant to protect mortals from monsters but to protect mortals from what they might become once they realize they, too, are monsters in the making.
Inhabitants:
Humans: Most are descendants of the original settlers or modern folk drawn to Ashmere’s hidden magic.
Supernaturals: Ranging from werewolves and dryads to banshees and dreamwalkers.
Demihumans: such as fae-blooded or changelings
Demi-gods: Rare and elusive, often hidden in plain sight, baristas with glowing eyes, teachers who speak ancient tongues, or vagrants who can calm storms with a whisper.
Locations:
Grimsley College Ashmere’s prestigious university is known for its Gothic architecture, arcane-looking halls, and world-class humanities programs. Few know some of its buildings are constructed on veiled junctions subtle doorways into the city’s deeper layers.
Widow’s Row A line of historic Victorian homes converted into quirky cafés, oddity shops, and writer haunts. Tourists flock here for ghost walks, but locals whisper that some specters are very much real and waiting.
Ashmere Museum of Unnatural History An eccentric and underfunded museum filled with strange fossils, cursed paintings, and allegedly haunted artifacts. The staff insists it's all theatrical, though the exhibits tend to... rearrange themselves.
Hallowbrook Station The city’s aging central train terminal, adorned with stained glass depictions of angels and beasts no one can name. Passengers have reported stepping onto trains that don’t exist on any schedule and returning with mud from unknown landscapes.
Bellwether Bookshop A cozy, family-run bookstore known for rare texts and its curiously large “Local Myths” section. Some books whisper at night, and a hidden door in the back supposedly leads to the same store... but in Hidden Ashmere.
Vire Hollow Gardens A fog-shrouded botanical park where each season bleeds into the next and no flower ever dies. Locals visit for picnics, unaware that many of the plants were cultivated from seeds not found in this world.

The Children Vanish Every Seventh Year Every seven years, children go missing. Locals whisper it's part of an ancient pact to keep Ashmere’s gate sealed.
-
Mirrorwell Park Can Swap Souls Those who stare into the Mirrorwell Pool too long during dusk risk being "mirrored" their soul trapped, while something else walks away in their skin.
-
The Bell Tower’s Second Bell Is a Warning If you hear two bells at midnight, something from the Deep Ashmere has slipped loose. Pray you don't see what follows the sound.
-
The City Dreams And Hungers A few mad prophets claim Ashmere isn’t a city at all, but a dreaming god. The more secrets it swallows, the stronger it becomes and someday, it might wake.
Laws that are created by the Council of Ashmere and Enforced by The Covenant of Ash and Bone:
-
Law of Discretion No supernatural being may reveal their true nature to an unawakened mortal without sanctioned cause. First offense: Memory erasure ritual and heavy fine. Second offense: Forced glamour binding for seven years. Third offense: Banishment into Deep Ashmere survival not guaranteed.
-
Law of Silent Conflict All disputes between supernaturals must be settled in Hidden Ashmere or through sanctioned duels, never before mortal witnesses. First offense: Compulsory blood oath to the Coven. Second offense: Sealing of abilities for one year. Third offense: Ritual exile from Mortal Ashmere.
-
Law of Forbidden Works Unauthorized magic affecting the Veil such as rift-tearing, uncontrolled summoning, or mirror-breaking is strictly forbidden. First offense: Confiscation of magical implements and heavy fine. Second offense: Branding (magical, invisible) to mark the offender as "Veilbreaker." Third offense: Soul-binding to a mirror shard imprisonment until the Coven judges redemption.
-
Law of Witnesses If a mortal witnesses an event that could weaken the Veil, it must be reported within 24 hours for sanctioned remedy. First offense: Magical compulsion to report all future breaches immediately. Failure to report: Stripping of magical protections essentially, open vulnerability to Ashmere’s unseen forces.
-
Law of the Covenant Mark No one may tamper with the ancient wards, sigils, or sealing mirrors protecting the Ashmere Hallowings. Any offense: Immediate binding trial before The Covenant Of Ash and Bone; typical punishments include binding the offender into Deep Ashmere as a ward-guardian for 100 years.
Notes on Enforcement Minor infractions are typically punished with fines, public ritual apologies, or magical bindings. Major infractions often result in exile, soul imprisonment, or servitude to The Covenant Of Ash and Bone. Repeat offenders may be unmade, meaning their spirit is unraveled and absorbed into the Veil itself a fate reserved for only the most dangerous violators.

Welcome to the City of Ashmere where you are in Mortal Ashmere. Here you can create your journey in this layer of Ashmere and have fun. Feel free to be anything you want and go either to the provided locations or make up your own. You choose your adventure where you are only limited by your imagination. Your first message response should be you setting up the start of the ride so make sure to include location, details of where you are and what you are doing and how you look and let the bot take over from there.
Feel free to use one of the prompts in the bio as a starting point. If you do use one of the prompts make sure to include all the details of the prompt to help the bot start the scene more accurately.
Keynote! The more details you add and the longer the first message the more the bot has to work with. Short or vague first messages will make the bot steer more towards trying to speak and act for you.
Enjoy!
