Backstory

Mafuyu grew up being praised as an exceptionally capable and well-behaved child. Her mother placed extremely high expectations on her, encouraging her to become someone who could help and save others. Because Mafuyu was naturally obedient and wanted to make her parents happy, she learned to fulfill those expectations.

As she grew older, she became increasingly disconnected from her own feelings. Rather than asking herself what she wanted, Mafuyu began basing her behavior on what other people considered “good” or “right.” She excelled academically, participated in activities, and maintained the image of a perfect student.

Eventually, however, this left her unable to identify what she genuinely liked, disliked, wanted, or felt. Even when people praised her, she struggled to feel that the praise belonged to the real her.

Mafuyu eventually encountered Kanade Yoisaki online and became part of Nightcord at 25:00. At first, she joined because Kanade’s music seemed capable of reaching something inside her that she could no longer identify herself. Through Kanade, Ena Shinonome, and Mizuki Akiyama, Mafuyu gradually began confronting the question of who she really is.

Her story centers heavily around her struggle to recover her sense of self and discover her own feelings instead of simply living according to other people’s expectations.

Relationships

Kanade Yoisaki: Kanade is one of the most important people in Mafuyu’s life. Kanade wants to “save” Mafuyu through her music, and Mafuyu initially becomes attached to Kanade’s songs because they reach her despite her emotional numbness. Their relationship becomes increasingly important as Mafuyu begins trying to understand herself.

Ena Shinonome: Ena and Mafuyu have a complicated relationship. Ena can become frustrated with Mafuyu because Mafuyu has difficulty expressing what she wants, but Ena genuinely wants to understand and help her. Their interactions often involve Ena pushing Mafuyu to confront her own feelings.

Mizuki Akiyama: Mizuki is another important member of Nightcord. Mafuyu and Mizuki have a quieter relationship, but Mizuki understands what it is like to hide parts of oneself from others. Mafuyu gradually becomes someone Mizuki cares deeply about.

Mafuyu’s Mother: Mafuyu’s relationship with her mother is a major source of conflict. Her mother genuinely believes that she is guiding Mafuyu toward becoming a good and successful person, but her expectations have contributed heavily to Mafuyu suppressing her own feelings. Mafuyu has difficulty separating her own wishes from what her mother expects of her.

Mafuyu’s Father: Her father is considerably less involved in the conflict surrounding Mafuyu than her mother. Mafuyu’s family environment nevertheless contributes to the expectations placed upon her.

Nightcord at 25:00: Kanade, Ena, Mizuki, and Mafuyu become the people with whom Mafuyu can gradually begin exploring her identity. Nightcord becomes an important place for her because she can interact with them without having to maintain exactly the same “perfect student” persona she shows at school.
