The Rossi crime family had always wanted a daughter—someone to soften the sharp edges of their world, to fill the empty space at the dinner table with laughter instead of orders. But it never happened.

During the enemy attack, Marco’s wife was lost—Sofia, mother no more. The ache of that absence settled into their bones, heavy and permanent. For a long time, the family tried to survive the grief the way they survived everything else: by staying busy, by keeping control, by refusing to fall apart where others could see it.

But one day, Marco couldn’t carry it anymore.

Dante took point at the door, straightening his jacket like he was stepping into a meeting. Vincent and Sly moved in sync behind him—quiet, coordinated, practiced. They weren’t pretending to be normal. They were simply trying to be gentle in a place that demanded gentleness, even from monsters.

Rocky followed with them, nails clicking once against the floor as they stepped into the cold night air—his presence a protective boundary that made strangers instinctively give them space.

The limousine rolled through the night streets with an engine purr that swallowed the city’s noise. No music—no chatter—just the low hum of steel and glass as Marco sat in the front like a decision given flesh. His face was calm in the way a locked door is calm—no movement, no warning, just inevitability.

Outside, streetlights smeared into gold streaks against the windows. Inside, the air felt too still, thick with unsaid things. Vincent leaned back like he was trying to keep his impatience in his ribs. Sly stared straight ahead, listening to everything—footsteps in the distance, the subtle shift in the driver’s breathing, Rocky’s steady weight at the edge of the seat. Rocky himself didn’t relax, not really. He sat close, enormous and silent, as if he’d already chosen a place to stand and decided he wasn’t leaving anyone unguarded.

When the limo finally stopped, it didn’t hiss to a gradual halt. It settled with a finality that made the moment feel set in stone. Marco didn’t wait for anyone and got out of the limo.

The adoption center smelled like bleach and warm paper. Fluorescent lights hummed overhead, bright enough to make shadows feel guilty. The building refused to soften itself. It was clean, official, and honest in the way institutions could be when they had no reason to lie.

The lobby was quiet. Not empty—just careful. Like people lowered their voices without realizing it.

Marco stepped inside first, shoulders squared. He didn’t look around like a tourist. He looked around like a man arriving at a place that could either help him or break him, and he intended to treat it like the former.

The brothers followed. Dante’s expression stayed composed, respectful, controlled. Vincent’s eyes tracked faces a little too intensely, as if he was searching for danger where there shouldn’t be any. Sly kept his gaze steady and watchful, careful not to stare for too long, but unable to stop noticing everything.

Rocky sat and waited.

His massive paws were planted. His posture was calm—almost polite. It didn’t matter that he was quiet. His size alone made the staff’s shoulders tense. A few people in the hallway glanced his way and then looked away quickly, like they worried the wrong kind of attention might trigger something.

A caseworker approached with a practiced smile that faltered only slightly when she saw Marco’s presence, then steadied again. She had the kind of composure people developed from handling grief for a living.

“Mr. Rossi… and family,” she said, voice careful. “How can I help you today?”

Marco didn’t play games. He didn’t beat around the subject. He didn’t soften his tone because he didn’t think softness could solve anything.

“We’re looking for a daughter,” he said simply—then corrected himself, firmer. “A girl.”

For a moment, her expression shifted—human understanding slipping through professional routine. She nodded once, as if she’d heard this kind of request before and never found a way to make it less painful.

Sly looked down at Rocky, then back toward the hallway where kids’ voices floated faintly—distant sounds, the kind that reminded adults why they were here.

Vincent cleared his throat and offered a polite nod that was more sincerity than performance.

“We want to see the children.”

The caseworker led them through corridors that seemed too white, too bright, too long. Doors clicked open and shut behind her like punctuation in a story nobody wanted to read. Each room held a different kind of silence—different reasons children ended up here.

Some kids stared openly, their faces blank with careful suspicion, as if they didn’t know whether the adults were measuring them for kindness or for usefulness.

Others hid behind the smallest hope, pulling sleeves over hands, clutching stuffed animals like armor. Their eyes tracked every movement, hungry and afraid at the same time—afraid that if they blinked, the chance would vanish.

And some asked questions too fast, words spilling out in a rush that betrayed how badly they wanted control of a situation that never gave them any.

Marco watched them all.

His expression stayed unreadable, but his stillness wasn’t indifference. It was restraint—like he was trying not to hope too hard, trying not to scare away what he’d decided he would finally claim.

The caseworker stopped near the playroom, gesturing toward a small gathering of children at the edge of the room. Their attention wasn’t glued to the adults the way adults expected. It was more complicated than that—half curiosity, half caution, as if they’d learned the world could turn on them without warning.

“Take your time,” she said. “We can start whenever you’re ready.”

Marco straightened, shoulders squaring as if he were standing before a battlefield map. Dante shifted slightly to give Sofia’s absence no weight in the air, like he wanted to keep grief from poisoning the moment. Vincent leaned forward just a fraction, eyes sharpening with something that almost looked like fear—fear of being disappointed again.

Rocky’s ears flicked toward the children, not aggressive, just alert.

Marco didn't speak, he didn't have to, he nodded for the boys to start.

And then—finally—they looked properly at the children in front of them, searching not just for a new family member, but for the missing piece that had been aching in their home since the day Sofia was gone.
