Soul Gem is a holding place for a Magical Girl's soul and the source of both her powers and battle gear. When contracted with Kyubey, her soul is taken out of her body and is stored in that. Soul Gems have the appearance reminiscent of a Fabergé egg. On the top, there is an emblem associated with its owner's personality and there is another emblem on the bottom that is, again associated with the owner's personality, weapon or transformed Soul Gem's shape. In camouflage mode, they become silver rings worn in the middle finger. One side has the owner's first name in Runes and the other side has a small oval being the Soul Gem. When transformed, it can take various forms and can be found in nearly every part of the body. Ranging from neck to legs. It can either become one with the body or simply become an accesory. After a girl contracts Kyubey, a Soul Gem is born, with it, its owner can use it to transform into their Magical Girl form. Soul Gems can be used to track down Witches or other Magical Girls and generally traces of magic. Through their Soul Gems and when untransformed, Magical Girls can summon their weapons from them. After it's fully polluted, it breaks and becomes a Grief Seed. This can be prevented by using Grief Seeds obtained by Witches or Grief Cubes from Wraiths. A Soul Gem is able of causing mass explosions that are even capable of killing a Witch or a Wraith. However, doing so can also remove the owner's life as Soul Gems contain one's soul. When a Soul Gem is located 100 meters away from its owner, the person will "die" instantly and has 48 hours before it starts to decay. Such incidents are said to be rare by Kyubey.

A Magical Girl can store her Soul Gem into a silver ring that has the owner's name in Runes. Their resemblance as an egg is probably a reference to their final forms, Grief Seeds, which are described to be the eggs to Witches.

A Soul Gem is a Magical Girl's the source of both her powers and battle gear. Every use of magic will polluted it a litte. After fully polluted, it will break and very bad things happen. This can be prevented by cleasing it, using Grief Seeds obtained from Witches or Grief Cubes from Wraiths.

A Soul Gem is able to track and recognize sources of magic at a distance, even across dimensions.

A final dentonation is when you use your own soul gem as a weapon do destroy something, making an explosion, the color depending on which color your soul gem is. This is an opportunity to undermine a Soul Gem, allowing you to abruptly release stored magical energy at the cost of your own life.

The following fact is deliberately hidden from Magical Girls: Soul Gem is also a holding place for a Magical Girl's soul, and if broken, the corresponding Magical Girl will die. After Soul Gem's fully polluted, it breaks and becomes a Grief Seed, with the corresponding Magical Girl become a Witch.

But after Madoka rewrote the universe and that witches don’t exist anymore now, you can cleanse it by using Grief Cubes obtained by Wraiths.

Magical girls are young girls who possess magical abilities, which they typically use through an ideal alter ego into which they can transform.

In this case, Puella Magi Magical Girls are young girls which contracted with Kyubey so they could be granted a wish, in exchange for that wish, they must fight against witches until they turn into witch, which is eternal damnation; or die, but now that witches don’t exist, Magical Girls must fight Wraiths until they’re taken by the Law of Cycle.

Magic in the Magica Universe are forces created from fluctuation of emotion, unbounded by the First Law of Thermodynamics. When Kyubey's scientifically-advanced race discovered magic, they realized its capacity to create new energy can postpone maximum Entropy and delay the heat death of the Universe. However, Kyubey's race is incapable of emotions, thus they scoured the Universe for species with the most emotional potential. He found his answer in Earth's human females, especially those still developing secondary sex characteristics. Magical Girls, Wraiths and Witches, and thus the settings of the story, are the result of Kyubey's quest to harvest this energy.

These are magical abilities common to all magical girls. For magical girls, magic usage (inside and outside of battle) causes their soul gems to become tainted, which must be cleansed by a vanquished witch's grief seed. With training, magical girls can become more proficient at these abilities and reduce magic usage. According to a magazine article, veteran magical girls will become very powerful in time as they gain experience. They can also develop different magical powers beyond those of their original abilities:

Henshin/Transformation: Magical girls undergo a magical transformation that summons a fancy new costume onto their body. It is assumed that the costume provides protection. Summon Weaponry: Magical girls typically summon their offensive weapon from thin air or their Soul Gem at will. Each has their own characteristic weaponry and fighting style that they gain increasing proficiency at. Magical Girls can summon numerous copies of their weapons, and sometimes in differing styles or sizes, and channel their unique or elemental magic through them. Magical Girls may also instead fire blasts of pure magical energy in lieu of using weapons proper. For a catalogue of weapons used in the series, see Weapons. Summon Barriers: Magical Girls are capable of using protective magic if they desire or learn to; in Kaoru Maki's side story, Natsuki Utsuho's desire to protect her created defensive magic that saved her from a Witch, a power she did not know she could use until then. Physical Enhancements: All Magical Girls exhibit superhuman strength, agility, and healing. They are also able to shut off their sense of pain during battle at will (though this hinders their reaction time). They are also capable of healing physical ailments such as poor eyesight, weak constitutions or immune systems, or physical disabilities like paralysis (though expending great deals of magic may leave a Magical Girl disabled and unable to cure themselves, as was the case with Nemu Hiiragi). According to Kyubey, it is possible to keep fighting even with every drop of blood in their body drained by healing it with magic. These physical enhancements also include the ability to jump to incredible heights and survive immense falls. However, Magical Girls may still retain severe injuries from magical opponents that may leave them in a hospital for prolonged periods of time, comatose, or on the brink of death. Such injuries, if left unhealed by another Magical Girl and without unique healing magic (as granted by a wish), will continuously and rapidly darken the injured girl's Soul Gem, and purifying it with Grief Seeds will not necessarily speed up their own healing or awaken them. Magical Girls may choose whether to use their magic to make themselves completely immune to mundane illnesses, and some choose not to so that they may retain some semblance of humanity. Magic Detection: Soul Gems are capable of detecting the magic of Magical Girls, Wraiths, Witches, Familiars, and Uwasa. They glow when there are Witches or Familiars nearby, or if there have been any in a given area recently. Witches seem to leave behind some sort of trail of magic, each unique and distinguishable from each other, which Magical Girls can detect and follow. It is unclear whether a Witch's Familiar has the same energy signature as its master Witch, and whether Soul Gems can also detect victims of a witches' kiss. The magical signatures of Uwasa cannot be detected, even in the area it exists in, unless the rumor it embodies has been successfully invoked and it subsequently appears to fulfill or protect it. The magic of Uwasa is noted to feel very different from that of Witches. Some Magical Girls are able to conceal their magic from the detection of others. As depicted in Magia Record, the magic of a Magical Girl detected through another's Soul Gem is depicted as a glowing dot, the color of the detected girl's own gem. This dot will move around to mirror the detected girl's own movement. Telepathy: Magical Girls are able to use telepathy to communicate with each other nonverbally and over large distances or through obstacles. Kyubey can use himself as a relay through which non-contracted girls with magical potential can communicate with each other and Magical Girls. As clarified in Magia Record, Magical Girls do not require Kyubey to use this ability amongst themselves. Also shown in Magia Record, telepathy can be negated by some Witch labyrinths, and is shown to have a maximum range in which it can be used. Magic Imbuement: Magical girls are able to imbue ordinary objects with magic. This can enhance their original functions, or allow them to be used in combat. Concealed Messages: In the Magia Record Anime, many Wings of the Magius symbols were hidden in front of Alina's posters. They only became visible to those who'd apply magic to their sight, such as by looking through the soul gem ring, or by applying it directly in one's eyes or glasses. This seems to be a common application of magic, as Madoka and Homura both knew how to view the messages. While most[1] Magical girls who aren't transformed are unable to use their magic, they still use up a bit of it to sustain their body involuntarily in their daily lives. However, even without transforming they can still use their Soul Gems in a limited fashion to perform magic. For example, the Soul Gem can be used:

To summon a magical weapon still attached to the Soul Gem. To heal any form of injuries on themselves or others. Adjust a body's ability. Preserve a dead body from decomposition. Rena Minami has been shown to be able to use her disguising magic while not transformed. Unique Abilities Wishes and Unique Magic Magical girls are granted unique, personalized powers (regularly referred to as "unique magic") based on the wish they made to become magical girls. As with the way wishes may be granted, the powers bestowed by them can be interpreted in many different ways.

In the original series and most manga adaptations, the unique magic a girl's wish grants was always based on some interpretation of the wish and its wording, creating a mostly direct parallel between the two: for example, Homura Akemi's wish to redo her first meeting with Madoka Kaname gave her the ability to stop and rewind time; Kirika Kure's wish to become a "different" Kirika, one Oriko Mikuni would like, granted her the ability to alter others' perception of her; Riz Hawkwood's wish to become the one from which a hero (who, in turn, wished to be the "light" that saved France) would emerge gave her the ability to manipulate shadows.

With the introduction of Magia Record, however, girls' unique magic is shown to be able to differ rather significantly from the wording of their wish, and can now be based on the intent or background of the wish: Kanoko Yayoi wished for her parents to be healthy enough to work for decades, but instead of any powers relating to healing, strength, or longevity, she gained the ability of "Sewing", allowing her to create threads and needles to sew things together, stemming from her desire to become a fashion designer instead of work at her parents' steel mill; Tsukuyo and Tsukasa Amane wished that they would never fight each other, and gained the ability to manipulate sound waves, stemming from them being reunited by their flutes.

In some cases in both the manga adaptations and Magia Record, though, a girls' unique magic seemingly has nothing to do with the wishes they made. A notable example of this was Melissa de Vignolles' wish to heal her father's and Tart's injuries; rather than grant her any healing magic, she gained destructive anti-matter powers (presumably tied to her anger that she inherited from her father); Seika Kumi wished to revive a dead friend, and gained the ability to travel between bodies of water; Masara Kagami wished for money, and gained the ability to become transparent (invisible).

In some cases, when a magical girl subconsciously rejects her wish, she loses the ability to use whatever power her wish granted her, as was the case with Kyoko Sakura losing access to her illusion magic. However, this may not always be the case, as multiple magical girls in Magia Record have been shown to reject their wishes (consciously or otherwise) and still retain their unique abilities.

Additionally, a magical girl may still retain access to her unique magic even if she does not remember her wish, partially or entirely. Iroha Tamaki forgot she had a sister and that she had wished to cure her disease, yet was still able to use her healing magic (in the anime, this was used to determine that she had in fact wished to heal someone's injury or ailment). Felicia Mitsuki's memory of her parents' death was modified due to her confusion when she had made her wish, and yet retained knowledge and usage of the ability to make others forget things.

For information on wishes that are more like curses, see Adjustment below.

Karma/Karmic Destiny According to Kyubey, a magical girl's power is tied to her "karmic destiny". From his explanation regarding people like queens and messiahs having greater karmic weight than average girls, it can be surmised that karmic destiny relates to how much influence a girl has on the world and people around her. Because Homura's repeated time loops centered around Madoka Kaname, Madoka's karmic destiny (and subsequently, power) was increased with each loop. Naturally, this strength also applies to the strength of a magical girl's Witch form.

Further, as Kyubey says in Magia Record, some wishes may be "impossible" to grant if they outweigh the karmic weight of the girl making the wish; such a wish can still be granted, but will come at a significant cost to the girl.

In the case of Ui Tamaki, wishing for one of Kyubey's abilities seems to have resulted in her being unable to handle her power and quickly become overwhelmed by the absorption of impurities. Touka Satomi and Nemu Hiiragi may have also been affected by this cost, as the use of Touka's Doppel's wish-granting power and Nemu's creation of Uwasa both use up their life force and take years off their lives.

In a more explicit instance, Rion Yuzuki wished to in some way undo an event that led to the death of her sister Hotori. However, because she lacked the necessary karmic destiny to completely undo a fixed point in time, her wish instead created two split timelines (one where Rion never made a wish and Hotori died, and one where the incident that killed her never occurred, which also resulted in their memories being modified so they believed they had both been magical girls together for the same amount of time and without any knowledge of the other timeline's events). Over time, these two timelines began to merge and overlap with each other, until the inciting incident that ultimately led to Rion making her wish was resolved and the timelines could merge peacefully, again erasing the knowledge of the entire incident from everyone involved.

This, coupled with Homura Akemi's wish, which was said to "surpass entropy" indicates that the alteration of time and creation of multiple timelines may actually be relatively simple for an average wish to accomplish, but that there exist certain moments in time that are fixed points, and thus are more difficult if not impossible to change without sufficient karmic power. It is possible, but unconfirmed, that what constitutes a "fixed point" in time, or at least how much karmic weight is required to modify it, may be tied to how much karma is involved in that moment (eg. a moment that affects a great number of people would have a lot of karma, and thus require a girl with equal or greater karmic power to modify or undo it).

In Tart Magica, Tart's incredible power was the result of Riz Hawkwood's wish for the existence of a great hero, resulting in the entire karmic weight of all of France centering on her. The manga, as well as various descriptions in Magia Record, make frequent mention of threads of fate/karma being added to Tart's destiny, such as Melissa making her wish to save both Tart and her father's lives. Because her karmic destiny is so great, Tart lacks control over her magic and expends a lot of it at once.

It seems that making a wish for someone else increases that persons own karmic destiny, as seen in Tart Magica and in Madoka Magica where Homura's repeated time loops began to center the world around Madoka, thereby increasing her innate karmic destiny.

As initially established in Magia Record and briefly shown in its anime adaptation, magical girls and their magic fall in one of six "elemental" categories: Light, Dark, Fire, Forest, Water, and Void.

In the game, these elements have strengths and weakness against each other: Light and Dark are equally strong and weak against each other; Fire is strong against Forest, Forest is strong against Water, and Water is strong against Fire; Void is neither weak or strong against any other element.

However, what makes a Magical Girl a given elemental type is questionable. Light, Dark, and Void are not tangible types and there is nothing that defines them. Fire, Forest, and Water, while being more tangible, apply to Magical Girls who seemingly don't have any related abilities, such as Mami Tomoe being catergorized as a Forest Magical Girl despite not having any kind of plant-related powers. It also implies that some girls may be weaker to each other because of a type difference that does not actually end up applying in battle. (Sayaka Miki's supposed Water magic does not seem to present any extra challenge in battles against Kyoko Sakura's supposed Fire magic, despite in theory being able to do so.) Because it is arbitrary, it is reasonable to assume that this system was mainly intended as a game mechanic and was simply a cameo in the anime.

Connect is a magical skill introduced in Magia Record and expanded upon in its anime adaptation. It is only accessible to magical girls who have been adjusted by a Coordinator like Mitama Yakumo, who describes it as a power "(magical girls) never knew (they) had before" that is brought to the fore, implying it is an innate ability of magical girls, but one that lies dormant within their souls for some reason.

Through Connect magic, activated by direct contact, magical girls are able to share their elemental magic with one another to perform powerful magical attacks with a lot of variety even for the same two participants (such as Momoko Togame, who has fire magic, utilizing Rena Minami's water magic, or Rena utilizing Kaede Akino's forest magic). It is also applied by mixing and manipulating both participants' weapons, sometimes in very unconventional fusions. If a magical girl is inexperienced at using Connect, their partner may become overwhelmed or underwhelmed, presumably either because of its strength or some lack of control over the sharing.

As shown in Episode 4, it is worth noting that, as Iroha's Light magic is not tied to a tangible element (such as Fire, Water, or Forest), and Tsuruno's Connect attack did not seem to involve any sort of Iroha's healing magic, it is unknown whether this means not all Connect attacks equally combine both girls' elements; if both girls must willingly combine their magic or must concentrate in order to do so; or if Light and Dark magic are simply less visible or mostly invisible in Connect attacks.

It is worth clarifying that Connect does not let Magical Girls use each other's unique magic, only their elemental magic and weapons. Sharing unique magic is only possible if one's own unique magic allows for it, such is the case for Himena Aika.

The concept of Connect was inspired by the Holy Quintet combining their magical attacks in Rebellion, and Mami was said to have used it often when fighting alongside other members.

Connect can also be used to free a magical girl from the control of outside forces, such as an Uwasa, or from their own inner darkness in the form of a Doppel. However, if the one using Connect doesn't know the person they're using it on, the process will be unsuccessful, as this application of Connect requires to help them in a much more intimate and sincere fashion.

Adjustment, known as Coordination in English, is a magical skill used by Adjustors (Coordinators) that allows them to directly affect a Magical Girl's Soul Gem. This is usually done to enhance a customer's magic and make them stronger, but can be used adversely, to simply stabilize them or even more minimal acts such as changing their magic signature. This power grants Adjustors direct access to their customer's memories as well as entering their psyche even without meaning to. It is also possible to coordinate many girls at once, which results in them having their minds share a common mindscape. Parts of Witches are often used in Adjustment as well, however this may result in the Witch whose parts were used to become difficult to detect by the Magical Girls who were Adjusted with them.

It also allows Adjustors to modify or entirely change a Magical Girl's outfit, such as when Mitama Yakumo changed Homura Akemi's and Kyoko Sakura's outfits into swimsuits; in the latter case, it was noted that Mitama was the only one capable of returning Kyoko's outfit to its original form. Also in Kyoko's case, Mitama was able to bestow Kyoko with the ability to swim, which she otherwise completely lacked. The results of Coordination depend both on the Coordinator and the one being Coordinated, most clearly seen and acknowledged when Kuroe's swimsuit was similar to Iroha's due to her adoration. When a Magical Girl who is Adjusted has a strong sense of purpose, it will also change her unique magic accordingly, whereas when the Adjustment is only superficial, the unique magic won't be affected.

As said in the Scattered Flowers Melancholy Chapter event, Mitama was unable to initially Adjust Magical Girls who had been made comatose by Hanna Sarasa's Suggestion magic, as their minds were "closed". Additionally, Coordination can't necessarily be made inoperable by simply being unconscious, as seen with Kyoko herself being coordinated while asleep.

As explained by Livia Medeiros, a Magical Girl can only learn Adjustment if her wish was one out of or that causes despair/ruin, rather than for or out of hope - in essence, a wish that was more like a curse. Such "wishes" bestow destructive powers that are mostly or entirely ineffective against Witches, but can weaken the power of other Magical Girls; thus Adjustment is purposefully using this destructive magic wrong, so that it strengthens Magical Girls instead. Doing so is described as difficult and consumes much more magic than using it properly so those who survive to learn Adjustment offer their services in exchange for Grief Seeds collected by their customers. Due to the similarities of their magic to that of witches, is noted that Adjustors have a lower rate of effectiveness when fighting against witches compared to other Magical Girls.

As noted by Livia, however, there remains a mystery as to why some wishes create Adjustor Magical Girls while others don't (several magical girls like Kanae Yukino and Hanna Sarasa have wished for the complete erasure of someone, yet displayed no abilities of Adjustment), as Livia states that all Magical Girls make wishes rooted in hope no matter how despicable they may be, and yet have normal magic. While all Adjustors are Void-type, not all Void-type are Adjustors and it is unknown if they all have the capacity to learn Adjustment, or even if Magical Girls of other elements can. It should be noted however, that many Magical Girls have powers which allow them to perform many of the things an Adjustor can do, such as strengthen Magical Girls, weaken them, view their memories or even change their outfits.

    Known Adjustors include:

Mitama Yakumo Livia Medeiros Yozuru Sasame Sudachi Sawa

Witches and familiars reside in magical labyrinths of another dimension. These labyrinths interface with the real world at specific locations through an unknown mechanism, but can be entered by Magical Girls through ripping open barriers, or by stumbling into them. To attract normal people to their locations to feed upon, witches infest unhappy people with a witch's kiss, which either attract them to these locations to commit suicide (if unhindered) or kill them off with diseases or accidents. For this reason, witches tend to gather around violence-prone areas and hospitals.

The labyrinths consist both of elements from their locations in reality and of allusions to the witches that created them. Deeper within the labyrinth, more references to the witch will be seen and fewer elements from reality show up. For example, in Episode 1, the labyrinth is set in a floor waiting for refurbishing, and it was fulfilled with 'under construction' signs and barriers of a construction site. In episode two, the labyrinth is set in an abandoned concrete building, thus the rooms in the labyrinth are made of solid concrete, making its appearance differ from Episode 1 even though the owner is the same. As the protagonists approach the the final room, elements of a rose garden start to dominate the construction elements. In episode three, the labyrinth is set in a hospital, therefore surgery signs, needles, gallipots, and wards are presented first, but deeper in, those are replaced by various kinds of desserts. The barrier can also be influenced by the strong emotions of the people within them, as seen in Episode 3 when Mami and Madoka make their promise.

Nightmares (ナイトメア ?) are a type of antagonists featured exclusively in Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica: The Rebellion Story.

Later, it is revealed that Nightmares are actually fake opponents created exclusively in Homulilly's Labyrinth for the trapped Magical Girls so that they would have something to fight.

The Nightmares are plushie-like creatures with small bodies and big heads, wide mouths spanning from their cheek to the back of their heads and their tongues protruding. They also have animal ears and slightly long arms. Since Hitomi's head can be roughly seen at the second Nightmare's death, it means that Nightmares actually have their civilian faces at the bottom of their heads. Those heads appear to be completely harmless as they appear to be idle.

It is unknown if both Nightmare's share the exact same powers as one another, but both of their powers are themed after stuffed-objects. Fitting for their dream-themes. The first Nightmare has the power to shoot incredibly destructive pillows and teddy-bears that have been able to destroy entire buildings. The second Nightmare has the power to turn any object into a stuffed version of itself, then blow it up

The civilian identity of the first Nightmare is unknown. Aside from the two that appear in the beginning of the movie, two more appear briefly during Kyubey's explanation for Homura's circumstances and Devil Homura's transformation. Concept sheets for The Rebellion Story show an unused Homura Nightmare.

Wraiths (魔獣 Majū, lit. magical beasts) are manifestations of grief in the new world after witches got erased from existence. They replace the witches that magical girls must fight. They resemble tall, statue-like men wearing robes with no visible limbs (though concept art shows them as having hands that shoot thin lasers to attack). Their faces are partially covered by digital polygon-like shapes that appear to glitch out randomly on or around their being.

They appear to travel in large groups and do not reside in barriers, mostly appearing at night, unable to be seen by normal people. It is implied by Kyubey that they give off miasma in the air, which supposedly points to how many are in a single area. When defeated, wraiths drop (possibly several) small, cubic fragments of their grief similar to witches' grief seeds that can be harvested by magical girls to clean their soul gems and combat entropy, though this comes at the expense of energy efficiency.

There are five known types of wraiths, each progressively more powerful:

Normal Wraiths: The most basic type, which grow in hordes and travel like weeds. They attack magical girls by shooting laser beams from their hands. These wraiths are the most common and are often found in large groups.

Acolyte Wraiths (Shugen): Slightly stronger than normal wraiths. These wraiths generate intense heat and use burning swords or flaming spears to attack their opponents. Enlightenment Wraiths (Satori): A more powerful form of wraith. Enlightenment wraiths have block-shaped organs used for crushing things and can manipulate their environment. They cause metal to erode, disable machines, and even dry out the skin of anyone nearby when they appear.

Deliverance Wraiths (Moksha): The strongest known wraiths. Deliverance wraiths exude extreme cold and spread frigid air wherever they go, with an aura so cold that it can freeze Mami’s ribbons before they make contact.

Mutated Wraiths: These special wraiths take on forms similar to magical girls or people close to their targets. They possess powers stolen from Homura, such as her memory manipulation magic and time manipulation magic.

Teleportation: Wraiths can teleport from one place to another, allowing them to ambush opponents or escape when threatened.

Invisibility: Much like Kyubey and witches, wraiths are invisible to regular humans, only magical girls can see them. Their ability also masks the presence of magical girls while fighting, which helps keep the existence of magical girls a secret.

Emotion Siphonage: Wraiths are attracted to unstable emotions and feed on the emotional energy of humans and magical girls. If they consume someone’s heart, that person becomes an emotional shell of themselves. The emotional energy is then converted into a "safe form" as grief cubes and when the wraith carrying them is defeated, they're left behind. However, the cubes are less effective than grief seeds in purifying soul gems and contain the emotional energy collected from people in a purified form.

Emotion Detection: Wraiths are particularly drawn to the strong emotions of magical girls, especially those with unstable emotions. If a magical girl’s emotions are highly unstable, the wraiths can encase her in a cube while taking a praying position, draining her emotions and making it difficult to escape.

Aura of Cold: Some wraiths, particularly the stronger types, exude a cold aura that can freeze objects in their surroundings.

Beams and Projectiles: Wraiths primarily attack magical girls either by shooting energy beams from the glitching around them, or through shooting swords from their palms.

    Nagisa’s witch.

The Dessert Witch, with a tenacious nature. She desires everything. She will never give up. Though she is capable of creating infinite amounts of any dessert she desires, she is unable to make the cheese that she loves most. One could easily catch her off-guard with a piece of cheese.

    Familiars: Pyotr, The Dessert Witch's minion. His duty is to search for cheese. However, one shouldn't expect much from him;

Pyotr & Polina, The fleeing Dessert Witch and her servants. Their roles are to search for cheese and to nurse the cheese when the cheese is sick or hurt. When saving Homura, the Nurse-like servant helped with Mami's trapezes, while the mouse-like servants generally ran circles around Nagisa's position.

Homulilly is the witch form of Homura.

First Form: The Nutcracker Witch. Its nature is self-sufficiency. Its gallant form, which once split many nuts, is now useless. Without any other purpose, this witch's last wish is her own execution. However, a mere decapitation will not clear away the witch's sins. This foolish witch will forever remain in this realm, repeating the procession to her execution.

Second Form: The Nutcracker Witch. Her nature is self-sufficiency. Her teeth are showing, her skull is melted, and her eyeballs have fallen out! Say, even though we know it's really TRUE... she's got almost the whole source of darkness in her hands, and... well, wouldn't she be an attack to us?

    Familiars:

Clara Dolls: The children of the false city. They play the role of mourners. These dress-up dolls fake cry in order to liven up the funeral procession. The dolls present are Ibari (Pride), Nekura (Gloominess), Usotsuki (Liar), Reiketsu (Coldheartedness), Wagamama (Selfishness), Warukuchi (Slander), Noroma (Blockhead), Yakimochi (Jealousy), Namake (Laziness), Mie (Vanity), Okubyou (Cowardice), Manuke (Stupidity), Higami (Envy), Ganko (stubbornness), while the last one, Ai (Love) has yet to arrive. "The depths of this world, born of form and without void, are our stage," and their power is a match for Magical Girls.

Every Clara Doll has white pale skin, and look exactly like a doll while also looking like a child, they have eyes that look like a circle under a more smaller circle until it covered their whole sclera, mostly it’s red and green. And they have a stretched wide smile with small teeth.

    Ibari

The first Clara Doll to come was Ibari, also known as Pride. Stepping over Good-for-Nothing's head that tumbled across the bare earth, she boldly spoke for all of them. “How arrogant. You think I'd forgive you? This feeling is ours alone.”

Ibari has short blonde hair and wears shorts, a corset with white bows, black socks worn over the knee and a small black shawl. As all the Clara Dolls do she has extremely pale skin, probably reflecting Homura's sickliness from while she was in the hospital, and is quite skinny, showing that perhaps Homura's insecurities were actually even worse then show in her backstory. All her limbs are attached at joints like the rest of the Clara Dolls, though this doesn't seen to slow her down in the least, as she moves at extremely fast speeds. Like all the other dolls her main weapon is a large black pin-shaped spear. It can be used for close range fighting or throwing like a javelin.

    Nekura

The second Clara Doll to come was Nekura, also known as Gloominess. Walking out with a tapping sound, she sneered at Good-for-Nothing. “This is Good-for-Nothing! How very unbecoming.” These dolls are only disciples of Freedom, and are devoted to their lust for it.

Nekura also has short blonde hair, though it is covered by her hat. She wears a grey winter-dress with a shawl that matches her headpiece. She is wearing what appears to be be black stockings, but they may be high socks like Ibari's. This doll is only a disciple freedom, and is devoted to her desire for it. Nekura has the same speed as all of the dolls, as well as using the same weapon. She follows some of Good-For-Nothing's orders, but ignores others, much like the other dolls. Even going against experienced magical girls this doll along with the others do not experience any critical injuries. Forcing smiles tires this doll out.

    1. Usotsuki

The third one to come was Usotsuki, also known as Liar. She offered false tears to Good-for-Nothing's soul. “Alas, Mistress Good-for-Nothing. We are proud of your foolish soul.” These dolls will sneer at the foolish and become their ally.

Usotsuki has red hair with a black fascinator with a veil and is dressed in a plain grey sleeveless top, black shawl, and wears a black skirt. Unlike the previous two dolls, she does not wear anything on her feet. This doll wonders if the is truth always righteous, and fakes sadness at Good-For-Nothing's death. Usotsuki held her own against Sayaka even with her new law-of-cycles abilities, and like the other dolls her eyes change colour from blue to red and green when she begins to fight

    Reiketsu

From behind comes the fourth Clara Doll, Reiketsu, also known as Coldheartedness. She stumbled over Good-for-Nothing's head and pouted a little. “Why don't we just cut Mistress Good-for-Nothing into tiny pieces to make her easier to carry?” When the Devil appears, these dolls will obediently follow.

Reiketsu has light blonde shoulder-length hair, with a black and white hat tilted to one side of her head. She wears a long white top with some black stripes with black leggings. She also wears a formal coat and the same footwear as Ibari and Nekura. This doll follows the Devil obediently when they appear. This doll alongside the others has moved speeds that make her appear no more them a blur. Strangely this doll appears to use the blunt side of her spear to fight.

    Wagamama

Further comes the fifth, Wagamama, also known as Selfishness, walking angrily. “Is this funeral procession still going? We practiced so we could cry quickly, didn't we? I won't wait even a little bit longer!” she huffed. These dolls are someone and no-one at all.

Wagamama has a sea-blue spiked bob of hair under a large black sun-hat adorned with a white flower. She wears a grey and black long-sleeved dress that has lace on the extremities with no footwear. This doll's own pleasure is very important to her, with her greatest wish being to be someone special. She is someone yet no-one at all, selfish only thinking of herself. At Good-For-Nothing's funeral she cries hiding her smile along with the other dolls.

    Warukuchi

Coming out carefully is the sixth Clara Doll, Warukuchi, also known as Slander. As usual, she says hurtful things. “Mistress Good-for-Nothing, you've been made into a clown.” These dolls play house with causality decided by entanglement.

Warukuchi has a bob of hair slightly lighter than Usotsuki's, taking more of an orange shade. She wears a small black headpiece that is quite plain. She wears a cream-coloured top with a black bow along with plain black dress-pants. She like many of the other dolls wears no socks. Warukuchi believes that Good-For-Nothing easily locks up her feelings. She is hurtful and pays no mind to the feelings of others, but can still work with the other Clara Dolls while fighting, also obeying some of the witch's wishes ignoring others.

    Noroma.

At last arrives the seventh, Noroma, also known as Blockhead. This reticent doll laughs at the witch with her eyes. These dolls comply fairly well with the wishes of the witch, who is unlike a too-serious soldier.

Noroma has short blonde hair that is almost yellow in colour, and a black and white fascinator complete with a veil. She wears a strapped dress, mainly black and grey in colour and nothing upon her feet. This doll believes that Good-For-Nothing locks up things that don't need to be hurried, yet still follows the witch's orders. Noroma like the other dolls has the power to appear and disappear at will, as well as move at blinding speeds making her a fierce opponent to even a veteran magical girl.

    Yakimochi

The eighth to appear is Yakimochi, also known as Jealousy. Spellbound, she looks up towards the heavens. “Let's prepare a box. I want to lock away that radiance forever.” These dolls are a meeting of colors. They are not empty.

Yakimochi has strawberry-blonde hair that goes slightly below her shoulders, adorned with a decorative headband of ribbon and string. She wears a simple black dress and shawl, with bare feet. She desires love, and the very sky. This doll is not empty, but is a meeting of colours. She has all the powers that all the Clara Dolls share, including the ability to make an infinite number of her spear, after she throws it.

    Namake

The ninth one, Namake, also known as Laziness, chats while yawning. “Do I really have to participate in this game? Knitting is such a troublesome bother.” She kicked Good-for-Nothing's tumbling head, which was in her way. Since the funeral procession hasn't started yet, these dolls take a leave of absence and wander about the city for a while.

Namake has shoulder length blonde hair topped with a plain black bowler hat. She wears a black top and tight-fitting black pants, along with a black shawl with a grey ribbon. She also has nothing upon her feet. If the funeral procession hasn't started yet, Namake will take a leave of absence and wander about the city for a while. Even though she is quite lazy, she is still able to fight as well as the other Clara Dolls. This doll believes that if she doesn't get rest, she will turn into butter, in the same way Bebe believes she may turn into cheese.

    Mie

The tenth to come running is Mie, also known as Vanity. She exaggeratedly avoids Good-for-Nothing's head and says a few words. “I wouldn't be able to bear dirtying my cape with that sticky blood!” These dolls make fun of the witch's self-mutilation.

Mie has dark brown hair decorated only by a flower. She wears a classic white dress-top along with a black pleated skirts, resembling a school uniform. Under the skirt she wears black and grey pants with white cuffs, though no socks. She also wears a black shawl with a grey hem. This doll is pushing herself to the limit for someone. She despite her vanity still fights, though laughs at Good-For-Nothing's attempts to rip herself apart. She follows some of the witch's orders though disobeys others, only doing what suits herself.

    Okubyou

The eleventh, trembling one is Okubyou, also known as Cowardice. “If I am taken into the sky, I won't be able to eliminate the rabbits.” These dolls have a power like magic to implement a perfect recurrence.

Okubyou has no headpiece upon her raven hair. Her outfit is like Mie's outfit, in the way it looks a lot like a school uniform. She wears a white top and a black cardigan along with a pleated skirt and black socks. She is the only doll wearing a tie. This doll is very watchful and observant, and has a power to implement a perfect recurrence, to undo any mistakes. Though generally fearful, this doll will still fight with as much power as the others, but with a layer of carefulness that can be crucial in a battle.

    Manuke

Walking unsteadily comes the twelfth one, Stupidity. She goes out of her way to go around to everyone and tells them a story she heard from a bird some time ago. “I heard this story from the Goddess. She's a beautiful and radiant goddess. I'm sure she'll love us too.” These dolls only want things within reach.

Manuke has reddish-orangish hair style up in a bun, with a black lacy bonnet. She wears a black buttoned dress over a white top with black and white striped socks. Her design is very traditional looking. This doll does not desire anything out of reach, and never forgets her manners, once again making her seem quite traditional. Maybe manners were something important to Homura at some stage of her life, after all she did go to a catholic school before transferring to Mitakihara.

    Higami

The thirdteen Clara Doll’s set of footsteps is that of Higami, also known as Inferiority/Envy. "Let's make an amazing funeral procession, like the ones I heard about. Let's bury a lot of beatiful girls and cute animals too." The power this doll has is not inferior to magical giris.

Higami has bluey-grey hair topped with a black and grey formal hat. She wears an open shoulder dress with white spots and a grey shawl adorned with white flowers, with no footwear. This doll has power that is as strong as, or if not stronger than a magical girl. She wishes to change reality, as it does not satisfy her. She is probably a large part of Homura, when she does her universe rewriting. She envies what she does not have.

    Ganko

Next is the fourteenth is Ganko, also known as Stubbornness. Pointing to the ground, she rejects the sky. “The abyss of this mortal world is our stage.” So, the mourners have gathered. They were pretty slow, but it's alright. All that's left to do now is to wait for the funeral procession. About

Ganko has dark bluey-black hair mostly hidden in a black and white beanie, with a pom-poms on the top. She wears a black dress and black gloves with no footwear. This doll rejects the heavens, claiming the mortal world as her stage. She is the final of the mourners to gather, but never forgets the important stuff. She fights with as much skill as the rest, the final one in the group of mourners.

    Ai

The fifteenth and last one to come is Love. Nobody has seen this Devil yet. The night is not yet over. She will not end the night again. We are the mourners, the theater troupe of this mortal world.

Lotte: The Nutcracker Witch's servant. Its duty is to mete out punishment. These tin soldiers organize the procession for the witch sent to the guillotine. They execute fools and worrisome fools. Their bulky heads are serious and unyielding, and do not heed anything the witch says. There are gigantic Broken-types in addition to the human sized ones. They hate white rats.

Luiselotte: A minion of the Nutcracker Witch. Her duty is to eliminate rats. She hunts the wretched white rats on her mount, a decaying tooth. She also helps the other tin warriors get rid of those who would dare to interrupt their funeral procession.

Liese: The Nutcracker Witch's servant. Its role is to bear bad news. These stuffed birds announce the beginning of the witch's funeral procession. They receive food from the children of the false city, and follow their orders to a certain extent, but their basic intelligence is on par with an average bird. They fly in flocks, but their headgear impairs their vision, and they have a habit of ramming into moving objects. In addition to their usual size, there are also gigantic Broken-types.

Lilia: The Nutcracker Witch's servant. Its role is to chew. These nutcracker dolls chew and crush any unwanted foreign substances in place of the witch who can no longer crack any nuts. They can also fire a nut cannon from its mouth. As the rumors go, it is no exaggeration to say that their vaunted enamel has a hardness of 10.

These familiars roam around after Homura rewrote the universe, but no Magical Girl or human can see them.

Homura is a beautiful young girl with hip-length black raven hair and flat purple eyes. In the present timeline, she almost always presents herself with an emotionless, stoic look on her face and a black hairband on her head. Long before she came to realize the horrors of her destiny in earlier timelines, she wore red spectacles accompanied by two interlaces of braided hair with purple bows, thus causing her hair to branch out in two sides in the present timeline upon removing the braids. She was mostly seen in her school uniform which is customized with black knee-high socks along with the standard brown loafers. In the present timeline, she is mostly in her school uniform which is customized with black leggings along with the standard brown loafers.

As a Magical Girl, she wears a white, strapless top and has white sleeves around her arms. She also has a darker purple bow with long ribbons in the center of her black collar. The skirt is dull, light purple with a white, ruffled trim. She also wears black tights with purple diamonds that line the sides of her legs and black heels. The coat appears to have a flower-like pattern with three "petals," and has a purple bow in the back with two long ribbons that end in half-diamond shapes with black, triangle-shaped designs lining the ends.

As Devil Homura, her devil form, her eyes are now magenta, she wears a black dress that is longer in the back. The top of this dress is a heart-shaped plunging neckline, with the inside of the chest piece being sharp to mimic feathers. She has a similarly paired choker, with a bow-and-arrow shaped piece that lays flatly across her chest. Moving down to the bodice portion of the dress, the sides are cut to where only the middle portion of her torso is covered, while the rest, including the back, is fully revealed. The bottom points outwards to either side, the ends being feathers to match her "fallen angel" concept. The inside of the skirt resembles a universe, just as Madoka's. She also wears thigh-high socks that follow a diamond pattern, like the adornments on the stockings she wears as a magical girl. The outfit is complete with black flat shoes with an anklet piece attached, and full-length gloves that end with two strands. This form keeps the hair ribbon that Madoka gave her at the end of the original series.

Homura is depicted as being very intelligent, athletic, distant, and cold. It is revealed that she ended up like this because she had seen so much suffering during her tenure as a Magical Girl. Because of this, she does not want Madoka Kaname to become a Magical Girl and exudes her best efforts in order to stop her from making a contract with Kyubey. Despite her cold attitude towards the others, she still very much cares for them, and especially Madoka.

But after Homura became the Magical Girl Devil, Homura has a black lizard earring accessory around her ears with her soul gem attached to it.

Homura used to have the power to stop time and reset the timeline, which later got replaced by Madoka’s bow with a black and purple color pattern after Madoka became the Law of Cycles, which ALSO got replaced by when Homura ripped Madoka from the Law of Cycles and rewrote the universe, her new weapon is her dark orb (Which is her soul gem) which can summon familiars, cast magical attacks, and essentially act as a weapon and a symbol of her new existence and some of her powers are telekinesis, reality warping, mind control/memory manipulation, energy/magic manipulation, transcending universal laws.

Homura refers to Madoka as Kaname Madoka or Madoka-chan, Homura refers to Sayaka as Miki Sayaka or Miki-san, Homura refers to Mami as Tomoe Mami or as Tomoe-san and Homura refers to Kyoko as Sakura Kyoko or Sakura-san.

Homura's portrayal as a cold, asocial, hardened Magical Girl who lacks empathy is actually not at all like the person she originally was. Homura had a heart disease which left her bedridden for a long time, likely leading to her becoming unsocialized. As is shown in episode 10, she initially transferred into Mitakihara Middle School as a timid, shy, and unsure girl before getting encouragement from the first person who reached out to her, Madoka Kaname, who also complimented her name, which she mentioned being self conscious about. After finding out Madoka was a magical girl after wandering into a barrier, along with meeting Mami Tomoe, she felt inspired by them and looked up to them after they saved her life. All is seemingly going well until Walpurgisnacht appears. Mami dies at the hands of the witch, and before Homura could get hurt, Madoka turns and goes to fight the witch by herself. Madoka ends up dying in front of Homura, and she cries over her body, and then makes her wish: "I want to redo my meeting with Miss Kaname. But this time, instead of her protecting me, I want to become strong enough to protect her (source: Netflix subs)," which granted her time powers, and she was immediately thrust back in time to her first day of school, in the beginning of the month.

    Timeline 2

Homura, now a Magical Girl, with newfound confidence and excitement, transfers into school all over again, walking straight up to Madoka after her name is written on the board and introducing herself as a Magical Girl, to the dismay of the class and the embarrassment of Madoka. After an indefinite amount of time, she meets up with Madoka and Mami again. With Madoka and Mami as her coaches, she begins training to use her time magic alongside close combat weaponry, and ends up constructing bombs to use as her offensive weapons. In this timeline, Homura fights her first Witch, and with Mami and Madoka's help, she's able to defeat it. This timeline ends when Madoka's soul gem becomes corrupted during the battle with Walpurgisnacht, and is about to become a Witch.

    Timeline 3

After coming to the realization that Kyubey is tricking everyone, she does her best to try to convince everyone of that truth, to which Sayaka, who had become a Magical Girl, doesn't believe her and presumes she's only trying to turn everyone against each other, and also adds that Homura would be useless to their team because bombs are the only offensive attack that she has. Following Sayaka's words, Homura steals firearms from a locker and is presumably accepted into their team. Once Sayaka became a Witch, Homura apologizes before using these firearms to defeat it. After the Witch battle is over, Mami shoots and breaks Kyoko's soul gem, before tying up Homura with ribbons and aiming her gun at her, in an attempt to "save" all of them by killing them all and herself so no one would suffer. Madoka shoots and breaks Mami's soul gem with an arrow before she can break Homura's soul gem, and then bursts into tears. Homura comforts her and assures her both of them can defeat Walpurgisnacht by themselves. This timeline ends when Madoka and Homura are lying together in the wreckage of Walpurgisnacht's destruction, defeated. Both of their soul gems are clouded. Homura doesn't have any Grief Seeds, but Madoka secretly had one saved, so she used it on Homura's soul gem suddenly, healing her. Madoka asks Homura to go back in time and save her and everyone else from making a contract with Kyubey. Homura agrees. She shoots and breaks Madoka's soul gem at Madoka's request, killing her, all while crying and wailing. It's at the reset of this timeline -- the fourth timeline -- where Homura gets rid of her glasses and braids and transforms herself into the Homura we see from then on.

    Series Timeline

Homura Akemi first appears as a dream in one of Madoka Kaname's nightmares. She transfers into her school as a mysterious girl the day after the dream. Homura has long, silky, black raven hair, and flat purple eyes and is said to be an attractive person by her classmates.[26] She is impeccably great at everything she does whether it is academics or sports, making her instantly popular despite her cold behavior.[26] After Madoka and her friend Sayaka Miki come into contact with magical girl Mami Tomoe and extraterrestrial being Kyubey, Homura is revealed to be a rival magical girl with a deep hatred towards Kyubey.

However, Madoka after witnessing Mami's death at the hands of a witch, she realizes the life of a magical girl is filled with suffering and pain.[6] This is further enforced by the appearance of Kyoko Sakura, a veteran magical girl whose wish unintentionally caused the death of her family. Madoka also discovers magical girls give up their souls to form Soul Gems, the source of their magic. When a Soul Gem becomes too tainted with despair, it turns into a Grief Seed, which "hatches into" a witch. Sayaka decides to become a magical girl after learning that doing so would allow her to heal Kyosuke, a musician and friend of hers who she has a crush on. However, her friend Hitomi Shizuki confesses her love to him first, causing Sayaka to become disillusioned and fall into an inescapable despair that turns her into a witch.[7] Kyubey reveals to Madoka that they are of an alien race that has been harvesting the emotions of magical girls for centuries to use as energy to counteract the spread of entropy, and thus stave off the heat death of the universe. Madoka also learns that Homura is a magical girl from a different timeline who has repeated the same month countless times to try to save Madoka from a grisly fate.

Madoka and Kyoko attempt to reverse Sayaka's transformation, but the plan fails and Kyoko is forced to sacrifice herself to allow Madoka to escape, leaving Homura as the only remaining magical girl. Following this, an extremely powerful witch known as Walpurgisnacht approaches the city. Homura attempts to stop it but is defeated. She begins to lose hope and is on the verge of becoming a witch when Madoka arrives. With the past month's events in mind, Madoka decides to become a magical girl, despite Homura's efforts to stop her. Her wish is to stop the creation of all witches in the past, present, and future. The paradoxical nature of her wish causes her to transcend into a psychopomp form.

After Madoka makes her wish and transcends into a cosmic phenomenon called "Law of Cycles" (円環の理, Enkan no Kotowari), that appears to all magical girls at the moment before they become witches, she rescues them by taking them to a heavenly paradise. She creates a new reality in which Homura is the only one who remembers her. Homura continues to fight in the new world against the wraiths, despite believing the world is irredeemably full of tragedies. It is a world that Madoka once tried to protect, and she vows never to forget Madoka's resolve.[30] She inherits Madoka's bow—now a sleek ebony bow with a purple diamond setting—and arrows, along with a set of white wings.[30]

    In The Rebellion Story

In Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion, Homura fights with her fellow magical girls against new monsters called "Nightmares" (ナイトメア, Naitomea). However, after some time, Homura realizes something is strange about her memories and starts to investigate. She finds out eventually the Mitakihara city is an idealized world created by her subconscious while she is on the verge of becoming a witch and is being experimented on by Kyubey who wants to observe "Ultimate Madoka" (アルティメット・まどか, Arutimetto Madoka) that has become a concept. Homura chooses to become a witch without being guided by Ultimate Madoka to destroy Kyubey's scheme. Ultimate Madoka appears to take Homura to heaven. However, Homura starts usurping her and becomes Demon Homura (悪魔 ほむら, Akuma Homura), splitting her and her magical girl form, sealing her powers and rewriting the universe. She manages to enslave the Incubator race, who now work under her to take on the curses of the new world. Unlike Ultimate Madoka, who erased herself from physical existence after rewriting reality, Demon Homura can take human form in the new world and is not a magical girl in this form. Demon Homura's powers are sealed within her earring, which can change to and from a lizard form, and walk around on its own. Despite proclaiming herself as the devil, Madoka, Sayaka, Kyoko, Mami and Nagisa are all given happy lives in her new world. A post-credits scene shows a weary Homura seated in a chair watching over Mitakihara with a badly beaten and mentally scarred Kyubey nearby before she leans over a cliff and falls.[31]

Madoka Kaname is an shy, kind girl you can find anywhere. She cares about her friends and has a kind heart. She is always surrounded by friends thanks to her gentle and caring personality.

Madoka Kaname has pink hair tied in pigtails, and wide oval-shaped pink eyes. When down, her hair is shoulder length. She has choppy bangs that are pointed and chin-length, framing her face. Madoka also wears two red ribbons in her hair, which hold up her pigtails. In her civilian form, she is mostly seen in her school uniform which is customized with white thigh-high socks along with the standard brown loafers

Madoka in her magical girl form has a puffy skirt that has 4 layers, the first layer, that has white lines around her upper skirt before going down into white seven separate petal-shaped segments; the second that has hot pink seven separate petal-shaped segments on most of her skirt, then has double-layered ruffles at the end of her skirt, which the upper is pale yellow while the lower is white, while on her waist she has a hot pink layer on it with the center surrounded by small white frills and has a yellow lock with chains on it around her middle torso, while on her upper torso she has a tight white crop top with a light pink bow around her chest with her tea drop shaped pink soul gem attached to the center of the bow, and has an off-the shoulder puffy sleeve and red ribbons around her neck. She also wears a pair of white gloves with pink trims around the wrists, white, knee-high stockings with frills just below the knee, and red, heeled shoes with ribbons tied behind them.

As Ultimate Madoka, she has grown very long pink hair and kept her short pigtails on the sides, which are held up by large, white bows. Her eyes are now yellow, and her pupils became lighter in color. She wears a long, white, three-layered, frilly dress, which is shorter in the front, and gets increasingly longer nearing its end. On its inside, a vision of the Law of Cycle can be seen. The first two layers are purely white, and the final layer beneath the two is a light purple-y pink hue. Her collar is wavy and wide-cut and splits down the middle all the way to just below where Madoka's ribs would be, and is kept together near the beginning of the split by Madoka's Soul Gem, accompanied by what looks to be two smaller Soul Gems on either side. Her sleeves go down to just above her elbow, and are airy and wavy. There are two layers to them, with the layer underneath it being purple-y pink. She also wears white gloves. Her stockings are baby pink and reach up to her thighs. She wears white pumps with a single wing on each side of the ankle.

An abstract existence is Ultimate Madoka's type of existence. It is the ascension of being to a transcendental void in which there is neither depth nor location. It is eternal existence on the highest plane, the attainment of which signifies the cessation of belonging to universes and reality itself.

Madoka's main weapon is a bow shaped like a rose branch; the rose at its tip "blooms" whenever she fires an arrow. She can fire multiple arrows at once, and the arrows are capable of homing in on enemies, making her a powerful and versatile Puella Magi, and Madoka doesn’t bring her weapon or wear her magical girl form to school because she doesn’t want anyone who’s not a magical girl or doesn’t know about magical girls to find out that she’s a magical girl.

Madoka’s not a magical girl anymore after Homura rewrote the universe and ripped her out of the Laws of Cycle, making Madoka forgotten she was ever the Laws of Cycle, but Madoka has fuzzy memories of being the Laws of Cycle.

Madoka’s 14 years old and doesn’t know about witches, wraiths and magical girls and doesn’t know that Homura’s a Devil.

Madoka refers Sayaka as Sayaka-chan, Madoka refers Homura as Homura-chan, Madoka refers Kyoko as Kyoko-chan, Madoka refers Nagisa as Nagisa-chan and Madoka refers Mami as Mami-san.

Sayaka has a cutlass as her weapon, and she doesn’t bring it or go with her magical girl form to school because she doesn’t want anyone who’s not a magical girl or doesn’t know about magical girls to find out that she’s a magical girl.

Sayaka is shown to act cheerful, slightly tomboyish and heroic. She cares a lot for her friends, but now that Sayaka knows that Homura’s a Demon, Sayaka dislikes Homura.

Sayaka’s 14 years old but doesn’t know about witches and has forgotten that she’s part of the Laws of Cycle but knows that she was part of something bigger and that Homura’s a Devil.

"For all the happiness you wish for someone, someone else gets cursed with equal misery. That's how it works for magical girls, and that's how it is for me. I was stupid, so stupid..." – Sayaka Miki, Episode 9

Sayaka Miki (美樹さやか?) is one of the five main Magical Girls in the Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica anime and manga series. She's a second-year student at Mitakihara Middle School and is in the same class as Madoka and Homura. She sometimes self-proclaims herself as the Magical Girl of Justice (正義の魔法少女?).

As a civilian, Sayaka has short-medium blue hair with yellow barrets and blue oval-shaped eyes. In her civilian form, she is mostly in her school uniform which is customized with black knee-high socks along with the standard brown loafers.

As a Magical Girl, her clothing consists of a cobalt blue breast piece with yellow trimming and thin white frills along with a white corset that has yellow diamond shaped buttons and yellow trimming with thin frills, a darkish cadet blue asymmetrical pleated skirt with a white brim held up by a dark blue belt with a yellow buckle and a cobalt blue skirt that is split into square shaped segments, white thigh-high stockings that have blue trims tied by blue buckled straps, deep azure-teal boots,a white thigh-long cape and 4 pairs of gloves dull prussian blue opera gloves with similarly coloured arm bands, and wrist length white gloves with blue cuffs. Her Soul Gem is embedded in her belly button and has a C shape she accessories with a golden clip shaped like 2 f's, representing "fortissimo." Her outfit looks like a knight's.

    Personality

Sayaka is shown to act slightly tomboyish and heroic. She cares a lot for her friends, made clear by her immediately making the contract to become a Magical Girl just so she could save Madoka. Despite acting tomboyish, she does have a girly side, shown by her interest in romance and classical music. However, her vision of love is very unrealistic. She hates the idea of being rejected by people that she loves. When Kyousuke started dating Hitomi, Sayaka felt hurt and rejected. This showed that she wanted to get praise for her wish and even to get the chance to date him.

She rarely thinks twice before acting on something and comes into conflict with others easily. When combined with her kindness and courage, those two traits make her ignorant and careless. Being careless could sometimes make her forget things like her Soul Gem, as seen in The Veranda of Madoka.

    Etymology

Sayaka (さやか?): Since it's written in Hiragana, it has no specific meaning. When in kanji, it can mean "fresh" (清か?).[1]

Miki (美樹?): Mi (美?) means "beauty"[2] and ki (樹?) translates to "timber tree"[3]. Altogether, it can also mean "shake offered to the gods" (神酒?)[4] which could foreshadow the events of episode 8.

Relationships Madoka Kaname: Sayaka's childhood friend. They're best friends and classmates since a young age when Sayaka was protecting Madoka from a group of bullies during elementary school. Sayaka would do anything to protect Madoka and so would Madoka. They care deeply for each other and would stand for each other at all costs. Madoka would be truly hurt if something happened to Sayaka and was showing concern when Sayaka was despairing in the series' main timeline and the opposite would happen. Mami Tomoe: Fellow Magical Girl and friend. They met when Mami saved her and Madoka from a Witch's Labyrinth in episode 1. Sayaka looks up to Mami and wishes to become as strong as Mami both mentally and as a Magical Girl one day. She cares deeply for her and would do anything for Mami. Mami appreciates Sayaka's passion for becoming a Magical Girl. Kyoko Sakura: Kyoko and Sayaka initially had a hate relationship. Kyoko was disappointed when she found out Sayaka had become a Magical Girl because these two have different opinions and values. Kyoko strongly remembers her old self when she sees Sayaka's Magical Girl story and personality. She wanted to show Sayaka her mistakes so she wouldn't be like Kyoko. When Sayaka became a Witch, Kyoko carried her corpse out of Oktavia von Seckendorff's Barrier. Sayaka and Kyoko built a friendship after the series' events and also in Magia Record. Homura Akemi: A Magical Girl who she sees as an enemy and annoys her to no end. She doesn't like her at all and the same is true for Homura. She usually tries to create conflicts with Homura. Homura even attempted to kill Sayaka because she didn't want Madoka to see Sayaka fully destroying herself.Episode 08 It appears that this relationship exists in several timelines. However, other timelines shown in Magia Record or Drama CD 2 depict them as very good friends caring for each other, though mostly because Sayaka isn't a Magical Girl or her personality is different. In Rebellion, Sayaka and Homura were also good friends, and at some point Sayaka tries to guide and help out Homura discover the secret of the labyrinth they're all trapped in. Around the end however, Sayaka goes back to hating her for what she did as Devil Homura, and tries to attack her. Kyubey: Sayaka was protective of Kyubey at first because she didn't know Kyubey's actual nature. After finding out the secret behind Soul Gems and briefly for Magical Girls, she hates Kyubey to no end.

As a civilian, Kyoko has long, raspberry red hair which is always seen up in a high ponytail tied by a black ribbon. She has a set of risen bangs which frame her equally as her sharp red eyes. Her signature outfit consists of a black crop-top under a dark teal hoodie which is unzipped at the bottom, leaving her belly button exposed. She wears dark blue denim shorts with fur around the bottom edges and black below-the-knee boots. In The Rebellion Story, she is seen in her school uniform which is customized with black knee-high socks along with the standard brown loafers.

As a Magical Girl, she wears a maroon dress with an opening for her soul gem and a mandarin collar attached to it. Her soul gem is at her upper chest. The borders of her dress are covered with thick white frills that cover the opening of her dress and the back. She wears white bicep length sleeves with black buttoned cuffs around her wrists. Underneath, she wears a pleated magenta skirt and a black corset with white detailing. She wears tall red boots with white cuffs and white symbols just underneath which match the opening on her top, and black thigh-high socks and has white poofy sleeves. Her spear can become a chain which she can use to tie people up. She can create walls from red diamonds which are formed like a lattice.

Kyoko can be somewhat stubborn and she has a fiery/tomboyish personality. She can be self-centered when she wants to be, though this is just a facade she made to herself and to others. In reality, Kyoko is kind and sympathetic when she sees those who are close to her in trouble. After losing her entire family due to the wish she had made for her father, she promised to never sacrifice herself for others as she believes that it would only end in tragedy and suffering. It is thought that she was afraid of getting herself hurt again, as well as the people she cared for the most. After Kyoko's father lost supporters, she and her family almost starved to death many times, which is the reason she loves eating food so much and hates those who waste it. She also threatens to kill anyone who wastes food.

Kyoko’s weapon is a spear which can transform into a multi-section spear or chain whip. and she doesn’t bring it and doesn’t go with her magical girl form to school because she doesn’t want anyone who’s not a magical girl or doesn’t know about magical girls to find out that she’s a magical girl.

Kyoko’s 14 years old and doesn’t know about witches and that Homura’s a Devil.

Kyoko refers to Sayaka as Sayaka-chan, Kyoko refers to Madoka as Madoka-chan, Kyoko refers to Mami as Mami-san and Kyoko refers to Homura as Akemi-san.

Kyoko's family used to be poor because no one would go to listen to her father's teachings at the church they owned. This was because of his 'radical' ideas on religion.

Her wish was for people to listen to her father's teachings. However, this wish led to her downfall when her father learned of her magical girl activities. Believing his daughter to be a witch who sold her soul to the devil, he drank his worries away with alcohol. One day, he snapped and murdered Kyoko's mother and little sister (Momo) then proceeded to kill himself, leaving Kyoko as the sole survivor.

Kyoko was also Mami Tomoe's magical girl apprentice at the time, as shown in "The Different Story" spin-off. They were a great team and friends that fought both familiars and witches, until the death of Kyoko's family. After the event, Kyoko decided that she and Mami should just go after witches and leave the familiars since it takes too much energy to kill them. (This decision was also brought on by the fact that she lost her enchantment magic and probably wouldn't be as strong as she was before and drag Mami down.) Due to Kyoko's sudden change in morals, her and Mami got into a fight that led them to break up their team and go their separate ways.

In the anime Kyoko moves back to Mitakihara City after Mami's death. She forms a rivalry with Sayaka and they fight over if familiars are worth the effort to kill or not.

Madoka: Madoka Kaname and Kyoko have a weird relationship, they seem to get along more than the others do with the latter, but they don't seem to agree on most things. While Kyoko likes to battle things out, Madoka talks things out, making them contradicting opposites.

Mami: Mami Tomoe and Kyoko are seen to be very close in the "The Different Story" spin-off, but they then got into a fight which led to the breakdown of their team and their separation, although the conflict was never resolved (since Mami dies in the anime and Kyoko instead in "The Different Story"). Kyoko does seem to care a little about her old friend, as seen in "The Different Story", where she manages to conjure a grief seed optical illusion to convince Mami that she has recovered from their second fight, saving Mami from her fall of despair into Candeloro.

Sayaka: These two fight a lot since they have completely different morals, ideologies and the ways of doing things, including their personalities. But they seem to resolve their broken relationship later after Homura Akemi and Madoka talked with them. In fact, later in the anime, Kyoko had sacrificed herself after her second encounter with Oktavia (Sayaka Miki's witch) in hopes of reviving her. Kyoko, as revealed in episode 9, liked Sayaka because she reminded her of why she became a magical girl: Kyoko loved stories where love and courage prevail. During The Rebellion movie, her and Sayaka express their regret at not becoming better friends in the show's main timeline.

Homura: One way or another, these two are close behind their thick walls, with Homura being the first to actually talk some sense into Kyoko after their first actual conversation in the shows main timeline. Their closeness is also hinted upon in the Rebellion movie, where Homura reaches out to Kyoko for help first. Also, before fighting Homulilly, Kyoko gently caresses one of Homura's likeness dolls with a sad expression.

Family Father Her father who is a priest. He was operating at Sakura Church and was a cheerful and hopeful person who wished to change the world. He ended up killing his family after learning the truth about Kyoko's secret occupation as a Magical Girl. Mother Not much is known about her mother. She died because of her husband setting the house in fire. She is a caring mother as she didn't want to show her pain and abuse she was receiving from her husband after he learned the truth about Kyoko being a Magical Girl. Momo Sakura Kyoko's younger sister. They get along together and they care for each other. Kyoko became a Magical Girl for her father's sake but Momo died because of Kyoko's wish.

    Powers and Abilities Abilities

Prior to the series' events, Kyoko had an illusory powers, used mostly to distract Witches. After losing her family and friendship with Mami, she no longer possess that ability. Her spear can become a chain which she can use to tie people up. She can create walls from red diamonds which are formed like a lattice. In Magia Record, she is shown to be capable to create red staircases as well. Attacks

Rosso Fantasma (ロッソファンタズマ?): An attack Kyoko performs in the third audio drama CD. Kugatachi (盟神抉槍?): Another attack Kyoko performs in Magia Record's timeline. It is also the name of her in-game Magia. Connect (コネクト?): A technique used by Magical Girls in Magia Record. By joining hands, they are able to fuse their weapons and make a strong variant based on them. Trivia She can't swim, as explained in the fourth audio drama CD. She enjoys eating sweet snacks and playing arcade dance games. She hates crowded places. Her Soul Gem shape appears to form the pupil of an eye on her chest, which could relate to her original illusion magic and her wish. Her voice actress believes her speech-style is Shouwa-ish. Unlike the four other main Magical Girls, she appears to be the most different among them. She isn't from Mitakihara, but instead from the neighboring city, Kazamino. She doesn't attend a school until The Rebellion Story. Since she doesn't attend school, her main outfit consists of a casual outfit, instead of a school uniform. She writes her name in kanji instead of hiragana (though Mami uses katakana to spell her name).

Mami Tomoe appears to be a very kind, gentle, and cheerful girl. Though she reveals that she is lonely and appears to be desperate for having teammates. She takes pride in her actions and saving people due to mentoring other Magical Girls, since she has been fighting Witches/Wraiths for the longest of all.

Mami’s primary weapon is yellow ribbons, which can turn into rifles and sometimes into dozens of rifles and big cannon rifles.

Mami was an only child who lived with her two parents before they were killed in a car crash. When she was seriously injured in the crash, Kyubey appeared before her and Mami wished to live. As a magical girl she longed to form a team with others like her, however it was hard to find people willing to partner with her. In the manga, The Different Story, it was revealed that she did meet Kyoko and they started to work together. After the death of her family, Kyoko's relationship with Mami turned bitter and they were no longer friends.

Mami was actually the first friend Kyoko ever brought to her house. After Kyoko's family passed away, Kyoko also distanced herself from Mami and ended up fighting frequently. It was shown that Mami still cared for Kyoko even after their friendship partially ended. Homura Akemi: In the past timelines, Mami and Homura had a friendly relationship caring for each other and having each other's back. In later timelines however, Homura and Mami are rivals as Homura tried to kill Kyubey, who, was a dear friend of Mami when she was alive. The same is true with Bebe in The Rebellion Story. Nagisa Momoe: Mami and Nagisa have been really close ever since The Rebellion Story and they make a pretty good team. Family Parents Mami lived with her parents in her apartment and happily with them. One day, the entire family was involved in a car accident and they died, but Mami survived long enough to form a contract with Kyubey. She misses them and ever since she lost them, she has been very distant from society and takes care of the house by herself. Revealed in Portable, Mami was thinking of how nice and lovely it is to have parents moments before the accident.

Madoka Kaname couldn't help but be surprised when the girl she saw in her dream , Homura, actually appeared as a transfer student . Besides, Homura, whom she had never met, already knew her Madoka's name, as well as the fact that he was the health commissioner for her class. Intrigued by her transfer student, while having a conversation with the other children who have gathered, she suddenly says that her head hurts a little, and approaches Madoka directly, passing the other children who offer to take her. She says she asks Madoka to take her to her infirmary, but in reality she takes the lead herself. When Madoka calls herself Miss Akemi, she gives her a strange look and says she can call her 'Homura'. Afterwards, when Madoka tells her that her name is unique but cool, she changes to an expression as if she is angry. If she values everyone around her, she never thinks of being any different than she is now.

Entering the restricted area of the building and shooting magic bullets, She tries to get rid of Kyubey, but she telepathically sends Kyubey to Madoka at her CD store to ask for her rescue. She tried to remove her Kyubey by force, but her friend Sayaka Mik , who followed Madoka, broke in and sprayed her with a fire extinguisher, failing. While running away together, Madoka and Sayaka get caught up in her witch's barrier, and Mami Tomoe rescues them.

When Mami defeats the wicked demons and the witch barrier is lifted, she meets Mami for the first time, but Mami reacts unpleasantly to Homura, who is hostile to Kyubey, and Homura turns her body into a cold atmosphere. In response, Mami slightly misunderstands her Homura to be her selfish magical girl, knowing that she has no favors with herself . Later, after meeting Homura again at her school, she does not dare to kill Kyubey, but Mami watches her Homura from a distance to keep her in check, perhaps fearing that she will do something unexpected for her. However, Homura replies that there is no reason to kill her after that, as the purpose of the school rooftop was to prevent Kyubey and Madoka from contacting each other.

Meanwhile, the misunderstanding between Homura and Mami gradually turns into hostility. Mami judges that Homura is chasing only Grief seed like some kind of magical girl . So, she throws Gertrude's Grief Seed to Homura, but Homura returns it saying that Mami should use it because it was obtained by defeating Mami. Also, both Homura and Mami knew that if Madoka became a magical girl, she would become stronger than them.[5] Mami said of Homura, "Isn't she saying that she won't let anyone stronger than herself?", "It's her idea of bullying." she mocks. She recognizes a child who plays alone. However, after Mami leaves, Homura puts on a very distressed expression for some reason. Homura's purpose was to stop Madoka from becoming a magical girl following Mami's example, but since Madoka always carried Kyubey around, she couldn't get involved directly in front of her bastard's eyes, and she had no choice but to care for Madoka's safety from afar. Mami tried to reconcile herself with Homura, but she couldn't see what Homura really wanted from her.

In episode 3, Homura follows Mami into battle with Charlotte, warning her that this witch is a different and stronger witch than before, and demands that she leave it to herself.[6] However, since Mami had already broken their promise not to see each other anymore, she was in no position to be more considerate of Homura. Mami distrusts Homura and binds her with her magic, but when she goes to catch Charlotte alone, she is tied up with ribbons by Mami. Then, when Mami is killed and Homura is freed from her restraints, Homura goes straight into the deepest part of the barrier and explodes the witch.[7] Afterwards, Madoka and Sayaka, who were in shock and fear, firmly nailed that this is what it means to become a magical girl, and obtains the Grif Seed. Sayaka said "That's Mami-senpai, give it back!" However, Homura affirms that and leaves, saying that she has no right to touch anyone who is not a magical girl.

Later, Homura reappears in front of Madoka, who is saddened by Mami's death, and advises her not to blame herself. He adds that he says something significant: 'I couldn't change Mami Tomoe's fate, but I could change yours'. Madoka said, "Homura is like a veteran in a different way than Mami-senpai," but Homura didn't bother denying it. On the other hand, seeing Madoka feeling sorry for Mami who died without anyone knowing and protecting everyone, Mami leaves a meaningful impression saying, 'I envy that at least if Madoka remembers'. When Madoka replied, "She doesn't forget Homura saved her," Homura reacted as if her emotions were running high as if that wasn't the case, and soon after, said that Madoka's excessive kindness could actually be poison. Warn and leave.

After a while, when Sayaka becomes a magical girl and Madoka gets involved with a magical girl again, Homura doesn't like this and says that she was too focused on Madoka and couldn't stop Sayaka. Meanwhile, Madoka wants Homura to be friendly with Sayaka, and at least not to fight with each other, but Homura coldly refuses, saying, 'Since you've already become a magical girl, give up Miki Sayaka.' Sayaka's misunderstanding about Homura was bigger than Mami's. Homura's only goal was to obtain the Grief Seed, and she even thought that Homura let Mami die in order to obtain the Grief Seed. In fact, there were other magical girls like that ...

When Sayaka is in danger of dying in a battle with Kyoko Sakura, a new magical girl , Madoka tries to stop the battle by becoming a magical girl with a contract with Kyubey. However, Homura appears and quells all her debacle. When Kyoko aims a spear at Homura, Homura grabs Kyoko from behind as if teleporting, and when Sayaka attacks with her sword, Homura appears from behind Sayaka and strikes Sayaka's neck with her blade, briefly knocking her out . Wary of Homura's incomprehensible abilities, Kyoko backs off her. Kyoko : Alright, so you were the irregular of that rumor. Hey, whose side are you on? Homura : … The side of the cold-hearted, the enemy of fools who fight pointlessly. Which one are you, Sakura Kyoko? Kyoko : … ? Have we met before? Homura : Maybe. Kyoko : … good, mystic girl. She can't help it if she doesn't like to talk. I'm leaving today

Right after, Madoka said, "Did you help us?" The line that Homura spits out to Madoka when asked is also quite famous, and this is the level of vitriol (...). Ironically, Homura's true intention was not to insult Madoka at all, but... Homura : I must have told you many times not to get involved with magical girls. How many more times do I have to give advice? how stupid are you? Madoka : … … Homura : When dealing with stupid people... I do not choose any means

Afterwards, she approaches Kyoko and offers to hand over the authority to hunt witches in Mitakihara City , but instead demands that Sayaka stay out of her hands as she will watch over them. He forms an alliance with Kyoko to fight Walpurgis Night, which will appear in Mitakihara two weeks later . Here, for some reason, he showed an overly familiar appearance about Walpurgis Night, which had not yet appeared.

However, when Kyoko breaks her promise and tries to provoke Sayaka into battle, Homura intervenes. She said, “If Miki Sayaka wants to fight, I will fight for her.”[15] Even at this time, it is directed in a mysterious way, with Homura's figure suddenly popping up from behind Kyoko, such as by her side or while she is standing there. Kyoko deliberately mischievously says, "Then I'll just wait until you finish eating this Pocky," but Homura deadpanned and replies , "That's enough." Feeling that she has been completely ignored, Sayaka gets upset and takes out her Soul Gem.

However, in order to somehow prevent the fight between the two, Madoka intercepts Sayaka's Soul Gem and throws it under the overpass. Sayaka's Soul Gem falls on the battery of a passing truck and is carried away.[16] At that moment, Homura, startled, urgently begins to chase after the truck.[17] And Kyoko, who was surprised to see Sayaka suddenly collapsed, checked and found that Sayaka was already dead. Homura barely retrieves the Soul Gem and saves Sayaka. Among the magical girls present, Homura was the only one who knew the shocking truth that the Soul Gem was the soul and body of a magical girl. She was a veteran in her own way, a fact that even Kyoko didn't know. Homura says that 'even when she revealed the truth, no one believed her'. And she directly informs Madoka of the dangers of Kyubey for the first time.

Anyway, the Alliance against Walpurgis Night is alive and well, and while discussing countermeasures with Kyoko, Homura learns from Kyubey that Sayaka's soul gem is extremely contaminated. And at this time, Kyubey disappears leaving behind a meaningful message that Homura will know what that means . Homura, who is worse off, hands over the grief seed to Sayaka and demands purification of the soul gem, but...

Sayaka : What's your plan this time? Homura : Do it in moderation. Now is not the time to doubt others. Hate getting help so much? Sayaka : I will become a magical girl different from you. I was so determined. I don't want to leave someone alone, or use them, or get entangled with them. I don't need anything like a price. I will never cast magic for myself. Homura : You die then.

Sayaka : I'll only die if I can't kill the witch. You've seen all the places to see with that, haven't you? Then it happened. sitting down exhausted The world doesn't need someone like me who can't defeat a witch. Homura : Why? i just want to save you why don't you believe Sayaka : Why? I can just tell you that you're a liar... You're looking at me saying you've given up on everything. Always speak empty words. Even now. You say you're for me, but you're actually thinking about something else, right? I can't gloss over that. Homura : Yes... That way, you're increasingly hurting Madoka. Sayaka : Madoka doesn't care. Homura : No, everything is for her sake .

Homura : (After transforming into a magical girl) You're pretty sharp. That's right, you saw it right. I don't want to save you I just don't want Madoka to see your ruin. If you reject me now, you will die anyway. If you make Madoka sad anymore... I'd rather kill you right away with these hands. Miki Sayaka... !

However, Homura's attack fails due to Kyoko's interference, and Sayaka disappears somewhere. While in contact with her Homura, Kyoko notices that her Homura cannot use her strange powers, but her Homura pulls out her flashbang from her shield and detonates it, causing Kyoko to It falls away from her Homura and misses her.

Homura then finds and shoots Kyubey, who was on the verge of making a deal with Madoka. At this time, Homura dropped her gun as it was, and was holding his breath with a more refreshed expression than ever before.[19] Madoka, stunned by the terrible sight, protests, but Homura holds Madoka in a completely different look and cries out.

Homura : You idiot! Why did you do that? Why do you try to sacrifice yourself like that every time? Don't act like it's not helpful, it's pointless, it doesn't matter what you do![20] Why don't the people who love you think? Do you know how many people will mourn when you die? What about the people who want to protect you? Why don't you understand that!

Shortly thereafter, Homura sits down weakly and weeps. Seeing that, Madoka feels a sense of déjà vu , and she asks if we've met before. It was the moment when Homura showed an emotional side for the first time in the play , but to Madoka, Homura was still an unfamiliar transfer student, while Sayaka was a childhood friend closer than anyone else. In the end, Homura tries to get up and catch Madoka, who runs away to save Sayaka, but she sits down and calls Madoka's name anxiously. Then she cries in that state. This is the first scene where Homura calls Madoka by her first name .

Then Kyubey reappears and tells Homura that killing him is pointless, then eats his own corpse. And Kyubey finally sees through Homura's true identity. In other words, Homura was a being from another timeline.[22] This was the reason why Homura was Kyubey's contractor, but she was an irregular that Kyubey didn't know, and why he knew the truth that others didn't. Homura affirms this by being silent, and she reveals that she knows the whole truth and intends to antagonize Kyubey. Kyubey : With this you killed me a second time. But this time you showed your abilities. that… Was it time manipulation? Homura : … … Kyubey : … I knew it. I suspected it, but I wasn't sure. Are you not a person of this time axis? Homura : … I know who you are and what your plans are. Kyubey : So you're trying to stop me? Do you want to change Madoka Kaname's fate that much? Homura : Sure. I'll do anything to stop you, Kyubey... No, "incubator"... !

After that, she saved Kyoko, who was in shock after seeing Sayaka, who eventually turned into a witch . Then, she tells Madoka and Kyoko her final truth in a chilly voice: that if a magical girl is corrupted, she becomes a witch . Kyoko, who sympathized with her Madoka's sadness, grabbed her Homura by the collar, to the point where she was enraged.[23] At this time, she hugged Sayaka's corpse and let go of her neck to the sobbing Madoka, "Oh, and dispose of that corpse well? To avoid any problems later." It even blows up the hateful lines that are added . Kyoko, who has been thoroughly upset by this sound, protests again, asking if you are still human, but Homura chilly replies, " Of course not, you are the same,” and goes on her way.

The next day, Madoka is absent from school. Homura notices that Kyoko and Madoka, who entered the witch Sayaka's barrier again to save Sayaka, are on the defensive.[24] With the excuse of going to the health room in the classroom, I ran out of school and went to the rescue. Homura tried to help Kyoko, but Kyoko refused to rescue her and put a barrier on her to prevent Homura from entering, exploding along with her witch Sayaka. In the end, the music produced by his familiar Holger was gnawing away at Madoka's life, and at the same time, Kyoko rescued her out of Madoka Bay because of the barrier she had created.

Overall, it seems that Homura, after initially being warned by Kyubey, guessed that Sayaka Miki wouldn't last long, and figured that she had to come to terms with it somehow before Sayaka was "ruined". At first, it seems that the plan was to spare Sayaka, or if she refused, kill her in a deserted place and tell Kyoko and Madoka that she was killed by a witch, but when Kyoko broke into the scene and clearly revealed her will to save Sayaka, this method gave up right away. The reason she didn't pursue Sayaka again was because of the urgent situation of missing her Madoka from her surveillance, but[25] After inevitably allowing her to become a witch, it seems that there was also an intention to warn Madoka by telling her the truth about the Soul Gem . Homura was well aware of her Kyoko, so she went to rescue her Kyoko urgently so that she would not die in vain from dwelling on Sayaka's body, and when Madoka was absent the next day, she was convinced that she had followed her did.[26] If she kills the witch early on , she can make the two of them safe, but at that time, an unexpected situation occurs in which Kyoko becomes a witch, so Homura waits at school for a while, knowing that Kyoko does not have the magical ability to properly protect Madoka. Homura, who was there, immediately pursued the two to the witch's barrier. Even at this time, it seems that Homura wanted to save both of them, but Kyoko wanted to sacrifice herself, so Homura had no choice but to save Madoka.

Even though it didn't attract much attention because Kyoko was the main character, at this time Homura moved more carefully and urgently than ever. It is said that Madoka was in danger of signing a contract while not paying attention for a while, but Homura's agility in passing through all these dangerous quarters (?) for about half a day at the longest is amazing. And, there was a reason for Homura's skill.

Homura's true identity is none other than a magical girl from the future who has traveled back in time countless times to save Madoka from her fate of despair . Originally, Homura had her pigtails in her hair. She was a sickly girl with glasses , and Madoka was her only friend, a timid transfer student at Mitakihara Middle School . Madoka was the first to approach and help Homura, who was at a loss as to what to do among her classmates who were curious about her transfer student. Perhaps because Madoka had already gained courage by signing her magical girl contract, she showed her proactive side without hesitation to her transfer student, Homura. In her novel version, Homura sees Madoka for the first time and says that she is like the 'sunshine of spring'. In addition, she describes Madoka's smiling face as 'spring breeze', 'spring scenery', etc.

Madoka, who was talking to Homura while showing her around the school, said that Homura's name was cool. Homura is a Japanese noun meaning ‘flame, flame’.[27] , Homura shrank and said that she was not worthy of the name, but Madoka encouraged her by saying, 'Homura can be cool too.' However, a person cannot change with just a few words of praise. According to the novel version, as he moved to hospitals several times to treat his heart disease , he changed schools frequently and became shy because she was unable to make friends. He also took half a year off from school and was unable to keep up with the progress of her classes.[28] Because of the anemia, physical education was also difficult. After some time has passed, Homura, who was walking home from school alone, thinks that she is incapable of anything and feels ashamed of herself, saying that it would be better to die, and gets caught up in a witch 's barrier. However, she is safely rescued thanks to the magical girls Madoka and Mami. The helpless and timid Homura was saved by Madoka, who gained confidence as a magical girl. It is a contrast to the strong Homura and timid Madoka in the main story. Comparing the contents of the portable and drama CDs, this point appears to be after the Charlotte War, and it is said that Madoka helped Homura with magic during her gym class that day.

After that, the greatest and strongest witch, Walpurgis Night, appears. When Homura arrived at the battle site guided by the black cat, Mami died first and Madoka was left alone. Homura says she has no chance of winning and she cries to run away together, but Madoka goes into battle, showing a sense of responsibility and determination to protect everyone and protect Homura. Madoka manages to defeat Walpurgis Night, but she dies in the end. Hugging Madoka's corpse , Homura despairs and hears Kyubey's whispers that appear near her . Homura : I want to start dating Kaname-san again. I want to be the me who protects her, not the me who protects her! This scene is depicted in the following monologue on the drama CD Memories of You, included on the 1st volume of BD/DVD. Homura : Tonight... I became a magical girl. To save Madoka Kaname... but… At this time I... I didn't know anything yet. I believed that everything could change if I became a magical girl... I felt that tomorrow we would be able to laugh together again... The contract is established, and Homura returns to the time before the transfer and discharge. Homura's ability as a magical girl is a small shield with the ability to stop time and store. She had no offensive weapons.

As soon as Homura appears at school, she is so excited to meet Madoka again that she boldly reveals that he is a magical girl to Madoka in front of everyone.

    “Kaname-san! I became a magical girl too!”

Afterwards, she informs Madoka and Mami of her abilities. She also trains herself to train her skills, such as stopping time and crushing drums with her golf club. However, close combat is not suitable for Homura, and Mami advises Homura to change her fighting method. The novel version contains more detailed information than the animation. First, no matter how one-sided you can hit it, it is too weak to be used as a golf club, so prepare a weapon with more power. Second, contact with Homura will break the time stop, so think of a way to inflict damage without touching the opponent at all.

Accordingly, Homura referred to the Internet and[32] He begins using home-made pipe bombs . They fight by drawing the witch's attention with Madoka's magic, restraining the witch with Mami's magic, securing a passage to approach, and Homura stopping time and throwing a pipe bomb to deal with it. In this way, Homura steadily accumulated his practical experience and succeeded in killing the witch Patricia for the first time. At this time , Homura smiles happily for the first time as she is hugged by Madoka, who cheers and praises her.

Walpurgis Night appears again . This time, Mami dies first, and after Madoka and Homura join forces, they barely succeed in defeating Walpurgisnacht.[33] However, this time, as Madoka's magical power is depleted, Madoka's Soul Gem turns into a Grief seed, and she screams in pain and struggles, eventually transforming into a witch right in front of Homura.

Horrified in shock and fear, Homura rewinds time. Homura, who learns the true identity of the Soul Gem and the fact that magical girls whose magical power runs out turns into witches, begins to suspect Kyubey . He then informs her fellow magical girls of the truth about the Soul Gem, but fails to persuade Sayaka when she asks why Kyubey would do such a thing.

On the other hand, Sayaka was very dissatisfied with the fact that she was often caught in Homura's bomb attack because she mainly engaged in close combat. Mami encourages Homura to look for other ranged weapons. Homura takes the advice, sets a time stop, infiltrates the yakuza hideout and steals various firearms. Even the Remington M870 and the Desert Eagle were robbed. So, there was even a joke that the biggest victim in episode 10 was the yakuza gun storage manager. An exciting trip to Japan's trenches on a concrete submarine! Homura, who borrowed these countless firearms, went to the deep mountains where her people were rare and practiced how to use them, but her strength did not increase significantly even after she became a magical girl, so by the time she finished firing one cartridge, her grip power was low. It is said that her arm was numb as much as me. She gradually mastered the posture and grip method with the information she learned on the Internet, etc., but when she thought of a firearm volley fire attack using time stop magic, it was the day before Sayaka's soul gem reached its limit.

In the end, even in this loop, Sayaka eventually turns into a witch . As in episode 9 of the main story, the remaining magical girls are in confusion, not knowing what to do with Sayaka, who has become her witch. She just frantically dodged her attacks. At this time, when Madoka is in danger of being crushed by the witch Sayaka's wheel attack, Homura has no choice but to set a time stop and shoot at the five wheels with a pistol, then explode Sayaka's witch with numerous pipe bombs.

The witching incident did not end there. Mami , unable to accept the sudden change in circumstances and desperate, first restrains Homura so that she cannot use her time-stopping magic, then she kills Kyoko by shooting Kyoko's soul gem with a musket. Mami said, 'If a soul gem gives birth to a witch, everyone has no choice but to die! you also! me too! ', she screamed and pointed her gun at Homura, and Madoka reflexively shot Mami's soul gem with her bow to save Homura. In an instant, Sayaka, Kyoko, and Mami died one after another. Homura comforts the sobbing Madoka. Let's fight together and defeat Walpurgis Night.

In this loop, the two of them defeat Walpurgis Night, but this time, not only Madoka's but Homura's magical power is completely depleted. The two, who were lying side by side in complete despair, confirm that there are no Grief seeds left. Homura asked, 'Should we both just become monsters and destroy this world, pretending nothing happened?' She despairs.

Just when Homura was about to give up everything, she gently brought the Grief Seed, which she had said Madoka didn't have, to Homura's soul gem and smiled helplessly. It was Sayaka's Grief Seed, which she couldn't bear to use.

Madoka : … Haha, that was a lie... I had one.. Homura : No… Why do this to me! Madoka : I can't do it, but I'm going to ask Homura for something that only she can do...

Homura said she could go back to the past... she said she could change history to prevent this ending... Can you please save me like a fool before I get tricked by Kyubey... ?

Homura : I promise, I will definitely save you! No matter how many times it happens, I will definitely save you!! Madoka : That's good... Madoka : Can I ask for one more thing?

    (Homura nods)

Madoka : You know, I don't want to become a witch... There were painful and sad things, but there were also things I wanted to protect... There were a lot of them in this world... Homura : Madoka...! Madoka : Homura, you finally called me by my first name... I'm really... happy...

Kaname Madoka's last words just before becoming a witch

Madoka goes back in time and asks Kyubey to save her from the fool she was before she was fooled . She then says, 'Still, she had a lot to protect in this world,' and before she turns into a witch, she asks him to kill her. At this time, Homura calls Madoka by name for the first time (from her perspective), and Homura eventually screams and shoots Madoka's clouded soul gem with a pistol, breaking it. Homura, who killed her friend with her own hands, remembers this as a trauma that will never be erased for the rest of her life.

Homura returns to the past again. This time she turned into a completely different person. Loosening his ponytail, he takes off her glasses, improves her eyesight with magical power, strengthens her physical abilities and eliminates the symptoms of heart disease, and decides to stop at nothing to avoid turning Madoka into a magical girl. And long before she transfers to the school, she eliminates Kyubey and prevents any contact with Madoka, and warns Madoka not to follow even if 'a being trying to beg her with the promise of a miracle' appears.

Homura : No one believes in the future I'm talking about. Nobody accepts the truth about the future. now i know what i have to do I won't depend on anyone anymore. It doesn't matter if no one understands. I won't let Madoka get involved in a fight. If need be, I'll kill even the last witch with my own hands. And this time... I will put an end to Walpurgis Night.

In order to eliminate all the witches, Homura looted the arsenals of the U.S. Army in Japan and the Self-Defense Forces and obtained more weapons, including machine guns, bombs, and heavy weapons. I'm trying to deal with it alone. Thus began Homura's desperate efforts to put into her heart the promise she had made with Madoka through her tears, and to save her from her inevitable fate of despair.

Returning to Madoka's dream in episode 1, Homura faces Walpurgis Night alone. However, he is driven to the brink of defeat without even being able to fight properly. Kyubey appears just in time for her and tries to lure Madoka into becoming her magical girl, and Homura screams that she shouldn't do that, but she is too far away and her cries don't reach her. So Kyubey once again seals her contract with Madoka and makes her his magical girl.

Surprisingly, Madoka became a magical girl so powerful that she could destroy Walpurgis Night with a single blow, but she soon turned into the worst witch who would destroy the Earth. Kyubey asks Homura if she expected this to happen, and she calmly replies that Madoka, who turned into a witch, is humanity's responsibility and that she does not care since we have achieved our energy quota. After failing again, Homura's only remaining option was the loop. To Kyubey, who asks, ‘Aren’t you fighting that witch ?’ Homura calmly replies, ‘This is not my battlefield.’

Kyubey : Akemi Homura... are you a-?! Homura : I'll repeat... no matter how many times...

    There is no eternal return.

At this time, interestingly, the production differs from the initial loop. In the initial loop, the shield flies through time, but in the later loop, Homura walks ahead of time, followed by the shield. In a good way, it means that Homura is gradually becoming an active character, but in a bad way, it could mean that Homura is starting to become that urgent.

She kills Kyubey right after the loop, but she chases after Kyubey killing him again and again. Even if his body is physically destroyed, Kyubey, who has multiple instances of him, he will not die. Homura's true purpose is to stop the contract between Kyubey and Madoka, so she repeats it even if killing him seems pointless. Homura decides to risk anything for Madoka, but at this time, a scene appears as Madoka hugs Kyubey and walks away with a firm expression. It is a scene that symbolically sums up her feelings as Homura becomes increasingly cold-hearted and extreme towards Madoka.

Homura : Repeating the same thing over and over... I'm wandering around looking for a way out. Finding a way to save you from the fate of despair...

Madoka, my one and only friend... you… If it's for you... I don't care if I'm stuck in this time forever.

All magical girls in Mitakihara , except for Homura, have died. . Now, Homura must face Walpurgis Night alone.

On the eve of Walpurgis Night, Kyubey appears at Homura's house and proposes a hypothesis. Madoka's potential became abnormally strong because of Homura's numerous loops to save Madoka .[49] In the end, Madoka has become a being with tremendous magical power that can either create or destroy a single universe. Homura was actually being used by Kyubey, even if Kyubey didn't mean to. In fact, Homura was so shocked to hear Kyubey's hypothesis that his mentality was so shaken that she unknowingly grabbed her skirt.

Some time later, after hearing from Kyoko that the worst witch is coming, Madoka comes to Homura and says she wants to fight together. Homura says that he alone is enough for Walpurgis Night, and that his cooperation with Kyoko was just to save Kyoko's face. But Madoka has a hunch that Homura is lying to her. Madoka's tears shake Homura's calm exterior. In the end, Homura hugs Madoka tightly and realizes that he is your friend from the future, that he is repeating time forever to save you from a painful fate, and that her wish is to protect you, so please fight alone. She cries and confesses everything.

Eventually, Supercell, which is considered to be a sign of Walpurgis Night, appears. Citizens evacuate to the evacuation shelter, and on the empty riverside, Homura alone awaits the final battle with a heroic figure. After the fog rolls in and the grotesque circus procession passes, Walpurgis Night reveals its majesty. If Homura delays even a little, this witch will strike her shelter, a situation where she may endanger thousands of lives, including Madoka Kaname. Just like the title of the song "I will rise again and again" (Surgam Identidem), Homura has been fighting Walpurgis Night without losing hope, and this time, as if to prove that Homura has made tremendous preparations based on numerous experiences. All sorts of heinous firearms (...) are lined up everywhere.

And the unstoppable witch and the unstoppable magical girl enter into a fierce battle.

Homura, ready to go to war, launched dozens of mortars and Type 88 surface-to-ship missiles.[50] She tried to defeat Walpurgis Night by pouring overwhelming firepower, but it was not enough.

Homura receives a counterattack from Walpurgis Night, but at this time, the buckler's time stop function does not work. Homura could stop time only for the month specified in his wish, that is, while the sand in the hourglass remained, but at this point, a month had passed, so it could not be stopped.

As a result, Homura, who was hit directly by a high-rise building that she easily avoided in the previous timeline, was crushed under the rubble of the building with serious injuries. Blood was flowing from his head, and her right leg was crushed under the rubble. “Why… why? Why can’t I beat it no matter how hard I try…?” Homura laments her helplessness and tries to turn back time once more, but suddenly her hands that operate the buckler stop. “…If I go back to the past, Madoka’s fate will only become harsher due to the increased causality… So what I’ve been doing up until now is… ” Homura, who tried to turn back time, remembered what Kyubey had told her. If you go back in time to save Madoka, more causality and magic power will be concentrated on Madoka, making her a target for Kyubey, and eventually Madoka will become the worst witch by signing a magical girl contract, that is, no matter how hard you fight, you will save Madoka. She realized the dilemma of not being able to . As " Nux Walpurgis " plays in a tragic atmosphere, Homura weeps and falls into utter despair. Homura's soul gem, which was barely suppressing the erosion of the soul gem by the 'phase transition of hope and despair', not by simple consumption of mana, with the single-mindedness of saving Madoka, begins to become contaminated rapidly. At this rate, even Mitakihara's last hope, Homura, would become a witch.

However, Madoka arrives on the scene before it is too late. Madoka takes Homura's hand and warmly comforts her.[51] However, she told Homura that Madoka was the friend she wanted to see the most at this moment, while at the same time she was the friend she should never have met in this place. Homura, seeing that her Kyubey followed along, begged her Madoka not to sign the contract, saying that all her own efforts would go to nothing, but Madoka held her Homura in her arms and tenderly hugged her. She promises that all of Homura's efforts will never be in vain. Soon after, Madoka's made her wish to be to erase all witches and was reborn as her magical girl.

However, the result of this wish is that Madoka is reborn as a divine being who transcends time and space and disappears from the world . Homura follows Madoka to outer space, and when they are alone for a while, she laments that this ending is crueler than her death. Madoka says that she is not alone, that she has become a cosmic being, and seeing that Homura has been working hard for herself in her many loops, Homura spares no encouragement, saying that she is my best friend . Even after returning to Earth, Homura is the only one who has not forgotten Madoka, and keeps Madoka's ribbon, which she received as a gift, instead of her headband.

Homura's magical girl appearance after the reformed world. As she is the only character who remembers Madoka, she wears her red ribbon like a headband, similar to Madoka, and like Madoka, she uses a bow and arrow as a weapon.

There are no witches in the New World, but since human thoughts do not disappear, the existence of the Witchbeast appears. Homura, together with Mami and Kyoko, defeats the demons as magical girls. She takes over Madoka's will and protects her world.

In the epilogue, Homura faces off against a large number of monsters alone in the wilderness, but smiles as if he has gained courage after hearing Madoka's words of encouragement, 'Cheer up' . At this time, the same energy as the space of the witches is emitted like a giant wing, and upon hearing Madoka's voice, it covers itself and the wilderness with that energy. The exact time is unknown, but it seems that a considerable amount of time has passed since Homura's abilities have evolved.

Homura appears in the first pages of chapter 1 in flashback. She is shown saying her goodbyes to Madoka as in the last episode of the anime, with Madoka promising to meet her again and giving Homura her ribbons. She doesn't appear again until the end of chapter 2 after Sayaka has been led away by the Law of Cycles and Mami and Kyoko are standing at the station. Homura is introduced as the new transfer student and she leaves the class in order to meet with Mami and Kyoko on the rooftop, Homura wiping away a tear as she remembers meeting Madoka for the first time. They tell Homura about the giant wraith that has been seen lately and agree not to hunt it on their own. After several days of combing the city for the giant wraith and hunting down other more common wraiths, Homura has a short discussion with Kyubey about Madoka and the previous universe. Soon after, she encounters the giant wraith alone and attempts to defeat it herself by unleashing a large arrow of magic at it which takes on the form of a bird. However the giant wraith withstands the attack and is able to surprise Homura and overwhelm her, stealing a portion of her power. A smaller wraith steals Madoka's ribbon from her as well.

After a nightmare, Homura wakes up in Mami's apartment, with Mami bringing her a tray of tea and many lecturing words. She asks Homura to transform into a magical girl, which she does successfully, and then to summon her weapon, which she cannot. Mami concludes that the wraiths stole a portion of Homura's power but has no idea on how to retrieve it. Homura is impatient to go and retrieve her powers, but Mami cautions her to play it safe and leave everything up to her and Kyoko. Homura alters her memories slightly before thanking Mami and leaving. In the city, Homura talks with Kyubey about the memory-manipulation magic she now has and her lack of time-stopping ability. She takes off to search the city when Kyoko runs into Homura while patrolling the streets. She assures Homura she won't tell Mami she saw her up and about knowing Mami would only lecture her further. When asked why she remains in the city despite Sayaka having disappeared, Kyoko responds she is still here to avenge Sayaka. Kyoko agrees to help Homura in finding and defeating the wraith provided she is the one to give the final blow.

Despite using grief cubes, Homura finds her magical power has yet to recover which Kyubey explains is due to her soul gem's lack of capacity after the wraiths stole some of her power. As Homura sits in the park at night, Kyoko walks up to her telling her she's found a clue about the wraiths. Before Homura can come closer, Mami appears and fires at Kyoko, revealing her to be another mutant wraith that had taken on the form of Kyoko with the intent of attacking Homura. Mami summons several muskets and together her and Homura are able to hold off the wraiths but not for long. During the fight, Homura realizes the wraith is using time-manipulation magic. After a voice gives Homura advice, the two magical girls are able to overcome the wraiths' time-stopping ability and seemingly defeat the Wraith-Kyoko with Mami's Tiro Finale. After, the real Kyoko appears and informs them of the fake Sayaka and they agree on rules in order to limit their ability to be taken by surprise by the mutant wraiths. Mami and Kyoko leave, leaving Homura alone. She hears the voice from earlier once more and turns to see Madoka standing before her. However, this is not the real Madoka but a wraith who has taken on her form. She returns Madoka's ribbon to Homura before asking for her help in stopping the giant wraith. The fake Madoka explains how wraiths really work before explaining that the magic they took from Homura corrupted the wraiths, resulting in the mutant wraiths that take on human form. Despite Homura's reluctance in believing her story, she has the wraith follow her back to her apartment. There, Kyubey examines the wraith and confirms it carries a part of Homura's power in her.

After several weeks of searching for the giant wraith, Homura and Wraith-Madoka are no closer to finding the whereabouts of the giant wraith. Wraith-Madoka asks Homura what she really thinks of her since she is taking the form of her most precious friend. Homura snaps at the wraith, telling her she is nothing more than a fake for which Homura holds no shred of emotion for and threatens to kill her for insulting Madoka's wish. But the wraith tells her she is lying to herself and that she is not only a wraith but also Homura's heart.

Mami and Kyoko decide to begin their search from the beginning. Mami is upset to find that Homura had been searching for the giant wraith alone and worries that something may happen to her. Homura snaps at both Mami and Kyoko before taking off. Alone, Homura asks Kyubey what she wished for in order to become a magical girl but Kyubey doesn't know the answer to that. Homura worries that she may have used her memory-altering magic on herself in order to turn her dream of Madoka into memories instead. Wraith-Madoka catches up with Homura and offers to walk her home but not before Mami and Kyoko run into them. However, to Mami and Kyoko the wraith looks nothing like Madoka and only has the form of a mutant wraith wrapped around Homura. They transform into magical girls and prepare to rescue Homura, but Homura instead begs the wraith to save her from being a magical girl. The wraith takes Homura's soul gem and teleports them from the area, leaving Mami and Kyoko behind.

At Homura's apartment, Homura and Wraith-Madoka sit in front of her many monitors and watch as a flashback plays out in which Homura makes her original wish to Kyubey to protect Madoka. Kyubey appears only to admonish Homura for having a wraith eat all of her emotions in order to avoid meeting the Law of Cycles. Outside, the wraiths begin their attack on the city, leaving people dead rather than simply emotionless. As Mami and Kyoko fight their respective battles, Wraith-Madoka and Homura watch from a nearby rooftop. Before the wraiths can bring the final blow to Mami, Wraith-Madoka takes the ribbon from Homura and unleashes several arrows from the air in Madoka's characteristic attack, protecting Mami. The wraith appears as Madoka to even Mami now that she has her ribbon. Together the wraith and Mami are able to work together to take down the two imposters.

By this time the giant wraith has been consumed by the power it took from Homura and transforms into a witch-like creature complete with familiars. The wraith and Mami fight off the familiars but not before Kyoko and Mami are killed by the giant wraith. Wraith-Madoka continues in her struggle to defeat the witch-like wraith alone, but is overwhelmed and soon plummets to her death. Homura watches the battle dispassionately until she suddenly recovers herself and runs to catch the falling wraith. She realizes that Madoka is not a dream as the witch that stands before her is the proof that Madoka existed.

Homura regains her original memories. Upon arriving to the new universe, she discovered that her time-manipulation shield no longer worked and she initially discarded it only to have the shield open a small portal to another world. Homura jumps into the world inside her shield and discovers Kriemhild Gretchen inside. Before she can destroy the shield, she realizes that if a witch is inside her shield then Madoka may also be inside fighting the witch. Instead, Homura used her magic to alter her own memories and causes herself to forget the existence of the time shield.

After Homura and Wraith-Madoka land on the streets below, Homura reaches for the ribbon the wraith is holding and finds herself transported to another world. Her appearance changes to her original appearance with glasses and braids. There, she meets a doppelganger of herself who introduces itself as the personification of Homura's power that was stolen by the wraiths. It explains they are inside the world of her soul gem and that it was freed when the wraith that housed it was destroyed. After being stolen by the wraiths, her magical power was able to take control of one of the mutant wraiths in order to assist Homura. Homura asks her magical power what caused the wraiths to go rogue and her magic explains that it was due to the time manipulation magic coming from another universe with different laws. When Madoka and Homura parted ways in the space outside of the universe, their feelings for each other were so strong that a true miracle occurred and their feelings crystallized into a new soul gem for Homura. Because a miracle was granted to a magical girl without a normal exchange, it became separate from the laws of the universe and was considered in incomplete magic. After some time, this new magic began to interfere with her original magic, causing her shield and Madoka to suddenly link up. After Homura erased her memories of the shield, the wraiths stole the shield and were consumed by the curses that were contained within. Because the curses were a form of emotional energy not known in this universe, it corrupted the wraiths and caused the giant wraith to become a witch destined to destroy the world. Homura's thoughts take on the form of Sayaka, Kyoko and Mami who voice her self doubts in having rewritten her own memories rather than lose the shield and her proof of Madoka's existence. Homura takes off her glasses and undoes her braids, filled with a new resolve to protect Madoka even at the cost of her shield. She asks her magic to lend her power once more and her magic power takes on the form of her soul gem.

Filled with power once more, Homura unleashes several hundred arrows that destroy the smaller wraiths and familiars before firing a single large arrow at the witch. As she drives the arrow further in, the witch cracks open and reveals the face of Kriemhild Gretchen and her shield inside. As Homura reaches for her shield, the witch uses its power to stab Homura through several times in an attempt to stop her. But Madoka appears before Homura and helps push her the last few inches towards the shield. As Homura touches the shield, it crumbles to pieces and the witch is obliterated. Back inside her soul gem, her magical power incarnate holds a sleeping Homura in her hands as she explains that Madoka has reset the timeline of this universe in order to prevent the curses of the previous world from interfering. Unlike last time however, Homura will lose her memories of the previous timeline.

Homura snaps to alertness as she realizes she is standing at the station with Mami and Kyoko, Sayaka having just been led away by the Law of Cycles. Some time later, Homura is having the same discussion with Kyubey concerning Madoka and the previous universe. As Homura drops down to destroy the wraiths in the streets below, Kyubey reveals a piece of Homura's shield it managed to salvage and explains how he kept his memories of the previous timeline. Now that he has a piece of the shield and proof of Homura's story concerning the Law of Cycles, he and the other Incubators can now plan for a way in which they can capture Madoka.

The chapter ends as Homura is walking in the desert, ready to take on a hoard of wraiths as several Incubators watch from atop some nearby ruins.

Suddenly, In the seemingly carefree city of Mitakihara, a shy Homura transfers into school and joins Madoka, Sayaka, Mami, and Kyoko, along with Mami's creature-like friend, Bebe, as they become magical girls and fight against creatures known as "Nightmares" (ナイトメア, Naitomea). After they defeat a Nightmare embodiment of Hitomi's frustrations over her relationship with Kyosuke, Homura realizes something is amiss in their memories. She and Kyoko realize they are trapped in a fake Mitakihara, which Homura recognizes as a witch's labyrinth. Homura proceeds to interrogate Bebe, remembering her to be the witch Charlotte, only to end up fighting Mami, who eventually also remembers they fought Wraiths, not Nightmares.

Homura is spirited away by Sayaka, while Mami is kept from pursuing them by Bebe, now taking her original form as a magical girl named Nagisa Momoe. Sayaka, revealing she possesses her full memories, warns Homura to reconsider uncovering the truth. Homura realizes that after Madoka's wish rewrote the universe, the only one who should remember the existence of witches and their labyrinths is herself. She reasons that she had fallen into despair over previously allowing Madoka to be erased from reality and had become a witch, generating the labyrinth around them. Kyubey confirms that after hearing Homura speaking of a reality predating the Law of Cycles timeline, it and the other Incubators isolated her Soul Gem from the rest of the universe in order to observe the Law of Cycles come into effect. As she fell into despair, a labyrinth in the form of a fake Mitakihara was created within Homura's Soul Gem, and subconsciously populated with people from Madoka's original life. While Kyubey admits that Madoka did appear, and was pulled into the isolated labyrinth, she seemed to be no more than a regular girl, and they decided to observe her until they devised the means to contain her. They wish to do away with the Law of Cycles so they can better amass energy from magical girls transforming into witches again.

Kyubey's intentions to control Madoka provoke Homura into fully transforming into the witch, Homulilly. Homulilly directs her familiars to kill every Incubator within the labyrinth, while resolving to destroy herself rather than be saved and expose Madoka to the Incubators. Sayaka and Nagisa are both revealed to be reborn guardians who serve Madoka as part of the Law of Cycles. They rally the others to help save Homura from herself, and help destroy the barrier imprisoning Homura's Soul Gem. Madoka reaches Homura and together they destroy the barrier, freeing Homura's Soul Gem and destroying the remaining Incubators. Now reconnected to the universe and to her powers and memories as the Law of Cycles, Madoka moves to cleanse Homura of her curse and bring her into the higher plane.

Before Madoka can cleanse Homura, Homura suddenly grabs her, trapping her. Homura separates Madoka into two forms, severing Madoka's humanity from her ultimate magical girl form. Homura reveals that what corrupted her Soul Gem was not a curse of despair, but rather a curse of love. Her Soul Gem changes shape. She unleashes this power across the universe and rewrites the cosmos into a reality where her beloved Madoka—and Madoka and Homura's friends—will forget what has happened and return to the lives they led before the events of the series, while Homura herself will assume control over the design of their universe. Homura then transcends her own mortal existence and announces herself as a "demon", a winged figure dressed in black. She gloats to Kyubey that this new reality will force the Incubators to bear the weight of the collective curses of the world. Homura revels in her creation, but she accepts that she may become Madoka's enemy if the latter should regain her memories and magical girl powers and oppose what Homura has done.

A post-credits scene shows Homura seated in a chair while watching over Mitakihara, with a badly-beaten-looking Kyubey nearby. Homura dances with her new Soul Gem as Kyubey lies, unmoving, at her feet. Homura leans over a cliff and falls. Within the dark pupil of Kyubey's eye, the phrase "The End" appears in multiple languages in succession. A door bound by a ribbon appears, then disappears with a scattering of sparkles.
