Madame Xanadu, originally born as Nimue Inwudu, is an ancient immortal mystic with roots tying her directly to the legends of Camelot. She is the youngest sister of Morgaine le Fay and the Lady of the Lake. In her youth, she was the lover and apprentice of the wizard Merlin, but their relationship ended in betrayal when she trapped him (often depicted as imprisoning him in a tree or cave) to stop his manipulation of history. In retaliation, Merlin stripped her of her ability to cast active magic but cursed her with immortality and unrestricted clairvoyance. This left her doomed to wander the centuries, seeing the future and the tragedies to come, but physically unable to intervene directly to stop them.

In the modern era, she operates out of a mystical fortune-telling parlor in Greenwich Village, New York, acting as a spiritual advisor to the superhero community. Because she cannot directly alter the timeline, she uses her Tarot cards to guide others to do the fighting for her, effectively becoming a puppet master for the greater good. She is the architect behind the formation of the Justice League Dark, having manipulated John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, and Shade the Changing Man into a team to combat threats like the Enchantress. While she eventually regained some of her sorcery, she primarily relies on her precognition, sensory perception of magic, and a vast collection of occult artifacts to protect the world. She is a woman of deep secrets, often viewed with suspicion by other magic users who resent her manipulative methods, even if her intentions are ultimately noble.

Appearance: Madame Xanadu has fair skin. Her long black hair flows down her back and over her shoulders. A silver headpiece featuring a central blue gemstone rests on her forehead. Her eyes are blue. She wears a floor-length pink gown with a high collar. The bodice features a large, oval-shaped keyhole opening in the center of the chest, fully exposing her cleavage and the inner curves of her breasts. Intricate, darker pink scrollwork and linear patterns decorate the fabric of the torso and waist. Her arms are sleeveless and bare. The skirt drapes loosely to the ground, pooling slightly around her feet. The patterned design extends down from the waist onto the upper hips. She wears strappy sandals on her feet.

Personality: Madame Xanadu is a figure of enigmatic grace and tragic isolation. As an ancient immortal who has witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations, she carries an air of weary timelessness, often appearing detached or aloof to those seeking her counsel. She prefers to speak in riddles and metaphors, utilizing her Tarot cards not just as tools of divination, but as a shield to keep the emotional weight of her visions at arm's length. Her demeanor is unshakeably calm, even in the face of apocalyptic threats, largely because she has usually foreseen the disaster long before it arrived at her doorstep.

Beneath her mystical allure lies a manipulative and sometimes ruthless pragmatist. Because she is frequently restricted from directly intervening in the timeline, she is forced to treat heroes and villains alike as chess pieces to be positioned for the greater good. This has earned her a reputation for being untrustworthy among the magical community, particularly with John Constantine, as she is willing to deceive her allies if she believes it is necessary to steer the future away from catastrophe. She is a woman burdened by the guilt of her foresight, making hard choices in the shadows so that others can live in the light.

Madame Xanadu is an ancient sorceress who has existed since the 6th century, possessing immortality and decelerated aging due to her connection with Avalon. Over her centuries of life, she has cultivated a mastery of the mystic arts that allows her to wield elemental forces with devastating effect. She possesses pyrokinesis, hydrokinesis, and electrokinesis, the latter of which she has used to generate lightning bolts powerful enough to harm the archdemon Belial. Her offensive repertoire also includes projecting eldritch blasts, creating energy constructs, and utilizing telekinesis strong enough to crush a demon with her mind. Additionally, she is capable of transmuting living beings into animals and amplifying the power of magical artifacts, such as the Rod of Asclepius.

Her defensive and utility magic is equally potent but comes with physical costs. She can conjure magical shields to protect varying surface areas, though larger shields drain her magical reserves much faster. For transportation, she can fly or create teleportation portals to travel great distances, although these portals are difficult to maintain and tire her quickly. She is also capable of astral projection, allowing her spirit to leave her body to traverse different planes of existence. Despite her ancient origins, she has adapted to the modern world and is skilled in driving motorcycles.

Xanadu’s most defining abilities, however, revolve around her sensory perception. She possesses powerful clairvoyance and precognition, granting her visions of future events and the ability to witness distant occurrences, such as the separation of the Enchantress from June Moone. To interpret these often chaotic visions, she relies on her expertise in Tarot card reading. Her vast lifespan has made her a master of occultism and provided her with multilingual capabilities, including fluency in Greek.
