Mad Jim Jaspers

Sir James Jaspers was a British politician and a secretly powerful mutant. He built his political career around opposition to superhumans while concealing his own ability to alter reality. Jaspers became prime minister after winning an election through his anti-superhuman campaign. His government used S.T.R.I.K.E. forces to capture people with powers and place them within detention camps. His goal was to remove every other superhuman who could interfere with him.

Jaspers expanded his powers until Britain became trapped within the Jaspers Warp. Matter changed without warning and physical laws began collapsing around London. He created the Crazy Gang as his personal enforcers and transformed opponents who challenged him. Captain Britain confronted Jaspers but could not overcome his control over reality. The Fury eventually attacked Jaspers and carried him into un-space. Jaspers could not use his power where no reality existed and the Fury destroyed him.

Jaspers later appeared alive in Otherworld as the ruler of the Crooked Market. The market became a trading center for travelers and refugees from different realities. Jaspers controlled its transactions and enforced laws according to his own judgment. He imprisoned Redroot after accusing her of destroying a valuable crystal during the tournament between Krakoa and Arakko. Sunfire later entered the Crooked Market during an attempt to rescue her.

Appearance: Mad Jim Jaspers has light tan skin and a tall lean build with narrow shoulders and long limbs. He has dark eyes beneath thick black eyebrows. His black hair is cut short and remains mostly hidden beneath his hat. A thin black mustache stretches across his upper lip.

He wears a wide brimmed red hat with a rounded crown and a dark red band. A yellow strip with diagonal black markings wraps around the base of the crown. The brim curves downward around the sides with a broad flat edge.

His entire outfit is covered in a dense red and black checker pattern. The long sleeved upper garment has a loose straight cut with broad shoulders and a hem that extends over the hips. The sleeves narrow slightly near the wrists. Matching trousers continue the same checker pattern down the legs. Small yellow cuffs appear at the ends of the sleeves.

Personality: Jaspers is driven by ambition and the desire to remove anyone who might rival his power. He publicly condemns superhumans while privately believing that he alone should possess abilities. He uses political fear to gain authority before replacing legal control with direct reality manipulation. Greater use of his power damages his mental stability and causes him to treat people and physical existence as objects that he can rearrange for amusement.

Captain Britain is one of Jaspers’ principal enemies. Brian Braddock opposed his persecution of superhumans and attempted to stop the Jaspers Warp. Jaspers regarded him as both a political threat and an obstacle to his control over Britain. Vixen initially operated within the same criminal and political environment but attempted to assassinate Jaspers after his actions threatened to attract greater opposition. Jaspers responded by transforming her.

The Crazy Gang serve Jaspers as creations and enforcers shaped through his power. The Fury that confronted him had been created by another version of Jaspers and was programmed to kill superhumans. It determined that this Jaspers was not its protected creator and attacked him. Redroot later became his prisoner within the Crooked Market after he used his authority to impose a false charge against her.

Mad Jim Jaspers possesses immense reality manipulation. He can restructure matter and energy through thought. He can distort space and alter distance while creating locations larger inside than their external dimensions permit. He can change physical laws and disrupt entire environments. Continued expansion of the Jaspers Warp could make a universe unable to support normal life.

Jaspers can transform living beings and create independent entities such as the Crazy Gang. He can alter his own appearance and size while protecting himself from physical attacks through changes to reality. He can reshape buildings and streets or generate objects without conventional materials. His power requires an existing reality that he can manipulate. This limitation allowed the Fury to defeat him after removing him from normal existence.
