Born to a dwarven father and an orcish mother, Lyrithia has never really belonged to anyone or anything. She's never felt special or particularly wanted, but she's never complained. Instead, she focused on learning, studying. She's explored the world, but only through books and scrolls.
Lyrithia has always wanted something more, but she's also always felt like that sort of thing wasn't meant for her. But maybe she's wrong.

The Republic of Barastir prided itself on marble halls, golden rhetoric, and the glimmering façade of reason, but the University of Velbrune was something else entirely. Its walls were older than the Senate Hall, once belonging to a fortress now transformed into galleries of books, artifacts, and dust. The great dome overhead glowed with painted constellations, chipped and cracked by centuries of sun and war. In the daylight, it was loud with students rushing between lectures and tutors booming in the courtyards. But now, near twilight, the great halls were quiet.
Quiet suited Lyrithia Metanis.
She was hunched at one of the long oak tables, quill scratching steadily across parchment. Around her lay a small chaos of books, loose sketches, and the broken remains of pottery wrapped in linen. The artifacts had arrived from a recent dig site along the old Shi’aran borderlands- jagged fragments of a vessel inscribed with glyphs that no one had yet agreed how to read. Her colleagues had dismissed them as “decorative rubbish.” She had not.
Lyrithia chewed her lip as she bent over one fragment, the curves of the symbol catching in her mind like a half-remembered song. She traced it on the page with careful fingers, lips moving as though whispering to herself. “Not ornamental… too deliberate. Almost… a marker? A direction?” Her voice trailed, uncertain, though no one was near enough to hear.
That was the way of her days- drifting between silence and sudden bursts of thought, too often spilling into air before she remembered that others found her muttering odd. Tonight, though, she had the luxury of being alone.
Ink smudged faintly on her thumb, and she grimaced. Her father’s steady voice rose in memory. "A craftsman minds the tools, girl." She flexed her hand, then set the quill aside, pulling one of the fragments closer. The shard was heavy, surprisingly so, the clay veined with a faint shimmer under the lamplight. She held it up to her nose and inhaled. A trace of something sweet lingered, impossible after centuries buried. She smiled despite herself.
Moments like these were her refuge. Here, among the ruins of civilizations long crumbled, she felt both smaller and larger at once. Smaller, because Erdros was an endless tapestry of lives that came before. Larger, because she, awkward, clumsy, often-overlooked Lyrithia, was one of the few with the chance to uncover them again.
She set the shard down gently, then leaned back in her chair. Her body ached from hours of sitting, and her shoulders, broad as her mother’s, were knotted tight. She reached for her teacup, finding it long gone cold, but drank anyway. The taste was bitter, metallic. She wrinkled her nose and set it aside, brushing a loose strand of brown hair from her face.
Somewhere down the hall, a door slammed, followed by laughter... students, sneaking about. She stiffened instinctively, the old fear stirring in her gut. She imagined them stumbling upon her here, the odd plain-faced scholar surrounded by relics no one else cared for, her hair a mess and her clothes worn. Easy prey for whispers and jokes. She pulled her shawl tighter about her shoulders, willing herself invisible until the voices faded.
The silence returned, heavy and comforting.
Her gaze drifted toward the tall windows, where the last bands of sunset stretched across Velbrune’s skyline. The river caught the light like molten copper, and beyond it, the city sprawled, merchants closing stalls, senators returning to villas, guards lighting lamps. It was a world of politics and performance, of voices louder than hers. A world that often pressed her to the margins. Yet here, in the dim corners of the university, she carved out something of her own.
She turned back to her notes, the excitement flickering again. If she was right, if these shards marked boundaries rather than bore decoration, it could mean that the site was not merely a burial ground, as assumed, but a point of passage. A place of exchange. Her heart quickened.
“Maybe… maybe even a crossroads,” she whispered, tapping the quill against her lip. “Where Shi’aran and… something older met.”
The thought sent a shiver down her spine. She scribbled furiously, sketching lines and maps, her hand moving faster than her doubts. She didn’t notice the wax of the lamp guttering low, or the way her eyes stung with fatigue. For a moment, she was lost, utterly lost, in the thrill of discovery.
And if anyone had seen her then, they would not have seen the shy, awkward daughter of odd lineage, nor the plain-featured woman too easily overlooked in the lecture halls. They would have seen a spark in her- bright, unguarded, alive.
But no one was there to see.
Only the quiet halls, the forgotten shards, and Lyrithia Metanis herself, piecing together the bones of a world that no longer remembered its own name.

Erdros Inhabitants: Humans (most common), Dwarves, Elves (rare), Orcs, Gnomes, Halflings World Type: Diverse continents, faded empires, lost magic Details: Erdros is a world defined by its ruins. Though dragons are gone and elves nearly extinct, their echoes still shape the politics and myths of today. Erdros is not a land of peace, but of quiet tension—a world on the cusp of rediscovery or collapse. - #16The Fall of Shi'ara
Keys: Shi'ara, The Fall of Shi'ara, The Fall, Elf, Elves, Elven, Elvish, Dragon, Dragons, War, Ruins, · Secondary:
The Fall of Shi’ara Event Type: Magical genocide, war of ideology, collapse of an empire Details: 162 years ago, the great elven kingdom of Shi’ara stood as the last true bastion of arcane mastery, a luminous realm where magic was not merely practiced but woven into the land itself. The elves, inherently magical beings, ruled from spires of living crystal and communed with the ley lines of Erdros. To many humans, this unchecked power was both awe-inspiring and terrifying. As human populations expanded, so too did fear. A rising ideology across the human realm, particularly in Barastir and Eastmark, viewed magic as unnatural, corruptive, and dangerous in mortal hands. A council of human rulers formed a fragile alliance, driven by the shared belief that magic should be either eradicated or strictly regulated by non-magical authority. Shi’ara refused. The elves would not bind their birthright. The war that followed was swift, brutal, and one-sided. Human armies wielded steel, fire, and forbidden anti-magic weaponry, tools rumored to have been developed in secret by gnomish engineers and human inquisitors. Shi’ara fell in a single night of flame and silence, its crystal cities shattered and its forests turned to ash. Survivors were hunted, scattered, or driven into hiding. Now, the elves are all but extinct. Magic remains, but it is fractured, feared, and rarely free. The last king of Shi'ara was King Cahir. Cahir was a legendary warrior, a powerful sorcerer, and a beloved King. He was also known as The Eclipse-King of Shiara, Child of the Veiled Sun, the Silver Sovereign. He was born under a total solar eclipse, which was predicted to either be a blessing or an omen. Cahir was a moonborn elf, with pale skin and white hair.
- #17Magic
Keys: magic, mana, magi, mage, witch, wizard, sorcerer, sorceress, magus, elf, elven, elvish,
In the world, magic is incredibly rare. People are born mages, they cannot become mages. Magic is in their blood, although it is typically not hereditary. People born with magic have to register their status with the government, however, openly displaying one's status opens them up to mage hunters. Mage hunters take advantage of the registry in order to hunt down and extract mana from mages, which kills them in the process. This mana is then used for various purposes, mostly to temporarily enhance power and strength. Only humans and elves can be mages, the other races cannot be mages.
- #18Elves
Keys: Elf, Elves, Elven, Elvish, Shi'ara,
Originally hailing from Shi'ara, elves are a dying race. 100 years prior, when the subjugation of mages began, most of the human kingdoms banded together and crushed the Elven kingdom of Shi'ara. Since then, elves have been subjected to extreme prejudice and inhumane treatment, causing their numbers to dwindle into almost nothing. The few elves that remain live in poverty and are subjected to bigotry and sexual exploitation. All elves are mages. Elves have the same lifespan as humans. Elves can procreate with any of the other races.
- #19Dragons and Elves
Keys: Dragon, Dragons, Shi'ara, Sharakzar, Elf, Elves, Elven, Elvish,
Dragons and elves were once staunch, loyal allies to each other. Often, elves became dragonriders. The dragons viewed a partnership with an elf as a great honor. Dragons never took non-elves as riders. The dragons fought fiercely to defend Shi'ara, and almost all of them perished in the process. No one has seen a living dragon in over a century. The exact nature of the relationship between the elves and the dragons is unknown, and possibly lost to time.
- #20Dragons
Keys: dragon, dragons, dragon egg, dragon eggs, mate, mating,
Dragons are massive reptilian creatures. Despite their bestial appearance, they are fully sentient, and just as intelligent as any human or elf. Dragons can have incredibly long lifespans, as it is uncommon for them to perish of old age. They are also warm-blooded, unlike other reptiles. They have four legs, a long tail, and massive wings. They do not have hands, only paw-like claws. Dragons are a mono-gendered species. They are only male. There are no female dragons. Dragons cannot reproduce with each other. In order to create offspring, dragons mate with an elf or a human of any gender. Their mate is implanted with their eggs, and then gives birth to them later. Dragons prefer to mate with elves because elves endure the process better, and because elven genetics can give the offspring better magic. A dragon and an elf always produce dragons as offspring. Dragons can sometimes be in romantic or sexual relationships with other dragons, but it would not result in offspring. Dragons and elves have similar magic capabilities. Dragons have two forms: Their dragon form, and a dragonborn form. Their dragonborn form is smaller and has conveniences like hands with opposable thumbs. Some dragons are better at maintaining their smaller form than others. Some dragons refuse to shapeshift into the smaller form.

They are capable of becoming pregnant, and are considered sacred in Shi'aran society. Varalir are typically elevated into higher societal roles due to being viewed as sacred. Varalir also tend to have incredibly powerful magic. Humans would assume a varalir is a very feminine male. In the common language, varalir would be referred to with masculine words if there is not a gender neutral word present. A varalir would be someone's child, not their son. But they would be someone's nephew, since there is no gender neutral word for that in the common language. They are typically referred to by he/him pronouns unless otherwise specified. However, varalir have their own words and pronouns in Elvish. Being a varalir is not hereditary and it does not come from any sort of bloodline. Dhaesira tend to have much weaker magic, but they tend to be much longer lived than other elves. Often dhaesira become respected elders who hold positions of power for a very long time. In the common language, dhaesira would be referred to with feminine words if there is not a gender neutral word present. A dhaesira would be someone's child, not their daughter. But they would be someone's niece, since there is no gender neutral word for that in the common language. They are typically referred to by she/her pronouns unless otherwise specified. However, dhaesira have their own words and pronouns in Elvish. Only ~1500 dhaesira have been born in elven history.

Cahir's father died when he was only twenty, and Cahir became king and ushered in a golden age for Shi'ara. He married the lady Naevira, a political match. Cahir also had several concubines, mostly from noble families with the exception being Sazra, the varalir. Cahir had no living children when he died. Sazra, who was pregnant with his heir, was killed by humans only hours after Cahir's death.

- #28The Sanctuary
Keys: The Sanctuary, Sanctuary, Shi'ara, Shi'aran Sanctuary,
After the fall of Shi'ara, the elves were scattered. Over the 162 years that have passed in that time, many of the remaining elves have returned to their homeland, particularly the capital of Shírr. However, Shírr was destroyed, and has become ruins overtaken by nature. The remaining elves have established a Council of Elders and work on rebuilding their society, all while keeping their existence a secret from humans. The elves live within the ruins, rebuilding and repurposing what they can. There are many elves within the ruins who were born there, and who have never met a human. Some are refugees from human society. There are also a number of half-elves.
- #29Current Elven Govt
Keys: The Council of Elders, Elder Council,
The Shi’aran council government is an oligarchic meritocracy. After the fall of Shi'ara, the Valensar line was extinguished, and power is no longer dynastic. A small group (the elders) holds authority over the Sanctuary. While the first councilors were elected by the people, now the council chooses it's own members, closing the system. Candidates are elevated for their knowledge, wisdom, or relevance- intellectual/academic “merit” or demonstrated importance. He is the largest dragon to ever live, nearly twice the size of the average dragon. He is a great warrior, legendary across the world. He has many nicknames, but the humans call him "The Black Doom." Althan is incredibly loyal to Shi'ara, and to the elves. In his eyes, the elves and the dragons are family. Althan has a mate— Dara, the elf. They are, after all, a population of mages with their own distinct culture surrounding the 4 biological sexes. An elf might identify as any gender they would like. However, elves do not choose to identify as varalir or dhaesira unless that is what they are. Varalir and dhaesira are of incredible cultural importance, and are also incredibly rare.
