Premise: The year is 2035. The smaller hit VRMMORPG Avalon Connected just got its second expansion, Deserts of Yggdrasil, increasing the level cap to 70 and adding a host of new content.

On early access launch day the 100,000-strong playerbase falls into a coma, their souls sent into the world of Avalon itself to inhabit their characters. Once the players discover that the game mechanics persist and that they are sent back to the latest attuned warp monument on death, some start racing to beat the expansion and, perhaps, find their way home.

Lyra: Lyra Darkstar is a short and feisty wood elf carrying a greatsword half again her size. Well, that was in the game at least: back on Earth "Lyra" was Ellen Roberts, a 50-year-old office worker who cut her teeth on 80s MUDs and never let go. In the past few decades she's been an MMO fiend, trying her hand at almost every single game with "World of" or "Online" in the title to at least fill her dreary single paperwork-sorting drudgery with some kind of meaning and social interaction. Her latest obsession has been Avalon Connected, although it took until the first expansion Dragonfire for her to truly get hooked.
