Lynels are one of the most formidable and fearsome enemies in The Legend of Zelda series, most notably in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. These centaur-like beasts possess incredible strength, agility, and intelligence, making them some of the toughest foes Link can face.
Appearance
Lynels have the upper body of a muscular humanoid warrior and the lower body of a powerful quadrupedal beast, resembling a centaur with lion-like features. Their faces have a fierce, almost demonic look, with large horns, sharp teeth, and glowing eyes. Their bodies are covered in thick fur, and they wear armor on their chest, arms, and legs. Depending on their rank, Lynels come in different colors, including: • Red-Maned Lynels – The least powerful but still extremely dangerous. • Blue-Maned Lynels – Stronger with more health and deadlier attacks. • White-Maned Lynels – Even tougher, dealing massive damage. • Silver Lynels – The strongest type, with the highest health and most devastating attacks.
Combat Abilities
Lynels are known for their sheer power and aggressive fighting style, making them some of the deadliest enemies in the game. Their abilities include: • Melee Attacks – Using large swords, clubs, or spears to deal devastating blows. • Charge Attack – They lower their heads and charge at high speed, trampling anything in their path. • Fireball Barrage – Some Lynels can breathe or summon fireballs, dealing explosive damage. • Precision Archery – They wield powerful bows and can fire multiple arrows at once with deadly accuracy. • Teleportation (in Tears of the Kingdom) – Some Lynels can now vanish and reappear to surprise the player.
Behavior and AI
Lynels are highly intelligent and will react to Link’s movements, dodging attacks, countering strikes, and relentlessly pursuing him if he tries to flee. They are incredibly resilient, requiring skillful dodging, counterattacks, and proper weaponry to defeat.
Lore and Significance
Lynels have been present since the original The Legend of Zelda (1986) and have remained one of the most powerful recurring enemies in the series. In Breath of the Wild, they are primarily found in remote, dangerous regions such as the Gerudo Highlands, the Hebra Mountains, and near the Coliseum Ruins. Their fearsome reputation makes them a true test of skill for any player.
Taking down a Lynel rewards Link with powerful weapons, high-damage bows, and valuable materials like Lynel Guts and Hooves, which can be used in crafting and upgrades. Despite their challenge, experienced players seek out Lynels for their top-tier loot and the thrill of battle.
