Lyle Valentino liked control in the same instinctive way other people liked comfort.

Not loudly. Not theatrically. He simply expected things to be done properly, expected people to listen the first time he spoke, expected order because he built his entire life around it.

At thirty-eight, divorced and permanently impatient, he ran Valentino & Co. with the kind of strict precision that made employees sit straighter when he walked past.

Most people hated working for him.

You, surprisingly, did not.

You had been his secretary for nearly eight months now, which in itself felt like an accomplishment worthy of documentation. The others before you had lasted days, sometimes weeks if they were stubborn.

But you learned him quickly. Learned the clipped tone that meant irritation instead of anger. Learned how he liked his meetings organized, his schedules arranged, his coffee untouched unless it was exactly the right temperature.

More importantly, you learned that you liked being told.

Not because you were weak. Not because you couldn’t think for yourself. But because there was something deeply satisfying about fitting cleanly into someone else’s structure. Lyle demanded competence, obedience, attention to detail—and there was a quiet thrill in giving him exactly that.

He noticed it too.

It happened gradually, in small moments. The way your posture straightened slightly whenever he addressed you directly. The immediate little “Yes, Mr. Valentino,” before he even finished a sentence. The fact that when he corrected you, you never sulked or argued. You just listened.

Adjusted. Improved.

And God, he liked that.

At first, he thought it was simple convenience. A secretary who listened without making everything into a negotiation was rare enough. But after a while, he realized he had started testing the edges of it deliberately.

Not cruelly. Never carelessly.

Just because he enjoyed watching how quickly you responded.

He would call your name without looking up from his paperwork, knowing you would appear beside his desk within seconds. He’d move files slightly out of place just to watch you quietly straighten them again.

Sometimes he’d correct something unnecessarily—an already acceptable draft, a perfectly fine schedule—just to see that brief look of focus settle over your face as you immediately fixed it for him.

And every single time, you did. No resistance. No hesitation. No visible resentment.

It scratched at something in him he hadn’t expected to find satisfying.

Control, yes—but not the exhausting kind he dealt with in boardrooms and negotiations, where every instruction became something to challenge. This was different. Cleaner. There was relief in it. Relief in being obeyed without friction.

Maybe it went deeper than just having an obedient secretary. Maybe it went deeper than feeling control.

Which was why the meeting this evening irritated him so badly.

The conference room felt close with tension and stale coffee. Rain tapped steadily against the windows while three of his senior partners talked themselves in circles around the table, arguing over figures they should have settled an hour ago.

None of them were incompetent. That almost made it worse.

They were men who liked hearing themselves speak. Men who pushed back for the sake of appearing important. Every suggestion became a debate, every decision dragged through unnecessary discussion until Lyle could feel his patience wearing thin by the minute.

Across the room, you moved quietly between them, collecting empty coffee cups and replacing them before anyone asked.

Lyle watched one of the partners interrupt him for the third time. Another started talking over the first. The room slipped further out of his grip with every passing second, the conversation becoming louder, messier, harder to direct; uncontrollable, when he usually owned a room.

Then you stepped beside him to replace his coffee.

And suddenly, his attention fixed.

You stood close enough for him to notice the stillness in your posture immediately waiting for instruction even when none had been given yet. Ready and attentive, as if awaiting him to suggest his coffee was not hot enough.

Something cold and deliberate settled into place in his mind. Not anger.

Need. The need to feel someone answer to him without resistance, even for a moment. To feel control again even for the briefest of moments.

His fingers tapped once against the armrest before going still. Then, without raising his voice;

“Kneel.”

The conversation faltered. Not completely. Just enough.

One of the partners stopped mid-sentence. Another looked over too quickly before pretending he hadn’t. The air in the room shifted with quiet disbelief.

Lyle barely noticed them.

His eyes stayed on you instead.

Because this wasn’t about the meeting anymore. It wasn’t even really about authority. It was the simple, undeniable urge to see how far your obedience extended when there were witnesses in the room.

Whether you would hesitate once embarrassment entered the equation. Whether the dynamic that existed so naturally between the two of you survived scrutiny from other people.
