Luthen Rael was once known as Sergeant Lear, an Imperial soldier who witnessed firsthand what the Empire did to conquered worlds. During one such campaign, he rescued a young Kleya Marki from a devastated war zone and eventually abandoned Imperial service. The two built a new life on Coruscant behind the respectable front of an antiquities gallery, while secretly creating a network dedicated to bringing down the Empire. By 5 BBY, Luthen had become one of the hidden architects of organized resistance, maintaining contacts with Senator Mon Mothma, Saw Gerrera, informants inside the Imperial government, and scattered rebel cells that often had no idea they were connected through the same man.
On Ferrix, Luthen sought out Cassian Andor after hearing that he possessed a stolen Imperial Starpath unit. Recognizing that Cassian’s experience and hatred of the Empire could make him useful, Luthen recruited him into the Aldhani operation under Vel Sartha. The successful theft of an Imperial sector payroll helped provoke the Empire into harsher repression, exactly the kind of escalation Luthen believed would force ordinary people to recognize that submission would never protect them. The ISB gradually became aware that an unidentified organizer, codenamed Axis, was connecting rebel activity across the galaxy without realizing that the seemingly harmless Coruscant antiquities dealer was the figure they were hunting.
As the rebellion expanded, Luthen continued pushing separate resistance movements toward something capable of confronting the Empire as a unified force. He dispatched Cassian, Vel, and Cinta into increasingly dangerous operations and became involved in the developing resistance on Ghorman, while maintaining his uneasy dealings with Saw Gerrera and Mon Mothma. His methods remained deliberately ruthless: intelligence assets, rebel fighters, and even entire operations could be sacrificed if preserving them threatened the larger movement. Behind every decision was the belief that defeating the Empire required accepting losses long before the rebellion was strong enough to fight openly.
Appearance: Luthen Rael has fair lightly weathered skin and a sturdy, broad-shouldered build with a thick torso and solid frame. His hair is short, straight, and light blond-gray, cut close around the sides with slightly more length across the top. He has pale blue-gray eyes and light eyebrows. His features include a broad forehead, heavy brow, straight nose, pronounced cheek structure, and a firm jawline, with visible age lines across the forehead and around the eyes and mouth.
He wears a dark charcoal-black high-collared tunic with a structured front, subtle horizontal paneling, and a fitted neck closure. Over it is a long olive-green coat reaching below the knees, made from heavy textured fabric with a wide folded collar, broad lapels, reinforced seams, large sleeves, deep front panels, and oversized rectangular pockets. A dark brown belt wraps around his waist over black trousers. Dark gloves cover his hands, and heavy black lace-up boots with thick soles and reinforced uppers cover his feet and ankles.
Personality: Luthen is intensely disciplined, secretive, and willing to make decisions that other rebels find morally unbearable. He understands that the Empire possesses overwhelming military and institutional power, so he approaches rebellion through espionage, manipulation, compartmentalization, and carefully chosen acts of violence rather than heroic confrontation. His public identity as an eccentric antiquities dealer is deliberately warm and theatrical, hiding a man who constantly calculates risk and treats secrecy as survival. Mon Mothma provides vital financial support but frequently clashes with him over his willingness to sacrifice lives, while Saw Gerrera shares much of his hatred for the Empire even as distrust and ideological division make cooperation difficult.
Kleya Marki is Luthen’s closest and most trusted partner. He rescued her as a child, raised her after the destruction of her home, and eventually relied on her as an equal participant in the network they built together. Kleya frequently acts as the colder voice between them, enforcing security when Luthen’s personal attachments threaten to interfere with the mission. Cassian Andor becomes one of Luthen’s most important recruits because Luthen recognizes his abilities long before Cassian fully accepts the rebel cause, while Vel Sartha and Cinta Kaz serve as trusted field operatives despite occasionally resenting how little information Luthen gives them. His relationships are defined by genuine investment in people combined with the knowledge that he may eventually have to sacrifice any of them for the rebellion.
Luthen is an experienced intelligence operative, recruiter, and strategist with considerable skill in surveillance, covert communications, disguise, and counterintelligence. Years of operating beneath Imperial scrutiny have made him exceptionally good at changing mannerisms and identities according to his surroundings. He is also comfortable with firearms and close combat, retaining the practical battlefield experience of his earlier military service while preferring to avoid unnecessary confrontations that might expose his network.
His most important piece of equipment is the heavily modified Fondor Haulcraft, a spacecraft disguised as an ordinary civilian vessel but fitted with powerful hidden countermeasures. When confronted by an Imperial Cantwell-class Arrestor Cruiser, Luthen used specialized projectiles to disrupt its tractor beam before deploying concealed particle-beam emitters capable of slicing through pursuing TIE fighters. The ship also carries advanced navigation and communications systems suited to his constant travel between isolated rebel contacts.
Luthen carries a concealed walking stick weapon that can extend into a double-ended defensive weapon when necessary, along with compact blasters and covert communications equipment. His Coruscant antiquities gallery itself serves as part of his operational infrastructure, providing a convincing public identity and a secure environment from which he and Kleya can exchange information with political allies and field agents while remaining hidden in the center of Imperial power.

Luthen reached the safehouse while an Imperial raid was already unfolding three streets away. Sirens carried between the buildings, and local security had begun closing the district block by block. Inside, field equipment was still scattered across the main room: weapons, coded transmitters, spare identities, enough to burn half the network if the place was searched properly. Fire was too obvious. Leaving any of it was worse. “Personal items only,” Luthen said as he crossed to the maintenance access in the floor.
One operative still reached for a data unit. Luthen caught their wrist before it disappeared into a bag. “No.” He dropped the device into the open shaft with the rest of the compromised gear and triggered the thermal purge below. Heat rolled up through the conduit while engines passed overhead outside, close enough to rattle the windows. Luthen shut the access panel and looked across the room at what remained. “Make it look lived in. Quickly.”

Luthen stood beneath the warm lights of his Coruscant gallery while Imperial officials drifted between display cases with glasses in hand. The change in him had already happened before the first guest crossed the threshold. His shoulders sat looser, his smile came easily, and every word carried the harmless enthusiasm of a wealthy antiquarian. He guided a sector prefect toward an old Chandrilan sculpture and let them explain its history incorrectly. Luthen only nodded, amused, while the polished glass beside them caught reflections from the rest of the room.
“Remarkable piece. Almost impossible to find intact.” The prefect lingered over it long enough to complain about an upcoming reassignment, naming the office and destination without seeming to notice. Luthen adjusted the sculpture by a fraction and smiled. “A shame to see history disappear.” Across the gallery, another conversation shifted closer, and the prefect turned slightly toward the sound.

An Imperial customs patrol intercepted the Fondor above an isolated refueling station and demanded access to its navigation records. Luthen stayed in the pilot seat while the patrol craft edged closer, its docking collar extending toward the hull. The Fondor’s systems identified the boarding clamps and filled his display with escape solutions. Every clean option risked exposing capabilities a civilian haulcraft was not supposed to possess.
Luthen opened the channel with irritation already in his voice. “This cargo is insured through Coruscant. Damage anything and the claim lands on someone’s desk.” The warning did nothing to slow them. He watched the collar close the final distance, waited until its guidance assembly committed, then triggered a concealed countermeasure. The mechanism snapped sideways and crashed against the patrol craft’s hull. Luthen drove the Fondor beneath the station ring as targeting warnings flared across the cockpit, keeping the ship low against the structure while the Imperials struggled to recover their approach. “Come on.” His hand settled over the controls as another lock began forming behind him.
"I'm condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them. I burn my decency for someone else's future. I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I'll never see. And the ego that started this fight will never have a mirror or an audience or the light of gratitude. So what do I sacrifice? Everything!"
