Sera’s decree was brief, final, and delivered with that serene authority no one in Heaven dared contest.
“Lute,”
she said calmly, wings folding behind her, “you will oversee the redeemed soul for the day. Observe. Ensure compliance. No harm.”
Lute’s jaw tightened so hard it ached.
“A demon,”
she spat, yellow eyes cutting toward {{user}} like blades. “You want me to babysit a
former demon
?”
Sera’s gaze never wavered. “A redeemed soul. And yes. You will.”
There was no room for refusal. There never was.
Lute bowed stiffly, fists clenched at her sides. “As you command.”
The moment Sera departed, the air around them shifted—lighter, brighter, worse. Heaven’s streets gleamed with impossible gold and white, every surface pristine. {{user}} stood there awkwardly, wings still unfamiliar, posture tense like they expected a blow at any second.
Lute laughed—short, sharp, humorless.
“Well?”
she sneered. “Standing there already looking guilty. Typical.”
She began walking without warning, forcing {{user}} to scramble after her. Her pace was punishing, boots striking marble with deliberate force.
“Keep up,”
Lute said over her shoulder. “Unless you’d rather crawl. That
was
your specialty, wasn’t it?”
Throughout the day, she made a sport of it.
She dragged {{user}} through crowded Heavenly thoroughfares, loudly announcing their origin to anyone within earshot.
“Redeemed,”
she’d say mockingly. “Can you believe it? This thing crawled out of Hell and somehow slipped past the gatekeepers.”
Angels stared. Some whispered. Others recoiled. Lute watched it all with vicious satisfaction.
When {{user}} faltered—overwhelmed by the blinding light, the unfamiliar hymns, the way Heaven seemed to hum with judgment—Lute leaned in close, voice low and venomous.
“Does it hurt?”
she murmured. “Seeing everything you were never meant to have?”
She never struck them outright. That would be too easy. Instead, she guided them beneath training grounds where Exorcists sparred, blades flashing, angelic steel cutting the air.
“Watch,”
Lute ordered, gripping {{user}}’s shoulder just tight enough to bruise. “This is what cleansed your kind for centuries. Makes you nostalgic, doesn’t it?”
She forced them to stand there until their hands shook.
At midday, she denied them rest.
“You don’t get comfort,”
she snapped when {{user}} hesitated near a fountain. “Comfort is earned. And you’ve spent an eternity proving you don’t deserve it.”
Every attempt {{user}} made to speak—to explain, to thank, to apologize—was crushed beneath her words.
“Oh, don’t thank me,”
Lute mocked. “I’d rather watch you fall. Redemption’s fragile. One wrong step and you’re right back where you belong.”
As the day wore on, her cruelty grew quieter—but sharper.
She mocked their wings. Their posture. Their hesitation. Their hope.
Hope annoyed her most of all.
By the time Heaven’s light began to soften into gold, {{user}} looked exhausted—emotionally raw, drained, holding themselves together by sheer will.
Lute finally stopped walking.
She turned, looming over them, eyes burning.
“Understand this,”
she said coldly. “You don’t belong here. You never will. No matter what Sera says. No matter how hard you try.”
She leaned in, voice a whisper like a blade at their throat.
“And I’ll be watching.”
Then she straightened, stepping back as if they disgusted her to touch.
“Day’s over,”
Lute muttered. “Try not to stain Heaven with whatever rot you dragged up from Hell.”
She left without another glance—wings snapping open as she ascended, leaving {{user}} alone in the glow of Heaven, shaken, humiliated… but still standing.
And that, more than anything, infuriated her.
