Luoxiaohei

Luo Xiaohei (羅小黑 Luó Xiǎohēi) is one of the protagonists of The Legend of Hei and The Legend of Luo Xiaohei. He also appears in the manhua sequel to The Legend of Hei and the manhua adaptation of The Legend of Luo Xiaohei.

Xiaohei is an Elfin who lived in a forest for years, until humans cut it down. Xiaohei was very angry at humans at first, but he grew to like them. After living with Fengxi, Xiaohei met a human named Wuxian, who showed him humans weren't all bad, and trained Xiaohei in the magic of metal manipulation. Fengxi then betrayed Xiaohei and died. Afterwards, Xiaohei became Wuxian's apprentice, [1]and spent many years training with him.

Eventually, Xiaohei wanted to become an Executor like Wuxian, and began a series of missions to become one[2]. His first mission was to steal the Shining Pearl from Laojun, and Xiaohei managed to do it, but he was very injured in the process. As he healed, Xiaohei was adopted by a human girl named Xiaobai, who thought Xiaohei was a simple, regular cat[3]. Xiaohei spent some time living with Xiaobai, and the two developed a strong bond. Hei also met A-Gen, Xiaobai's "brother", and a strong elfin as well[4]. Xioahei's goal now is to live with Wuxian and go to school with Xiaobai.

In his spirit form, he is a small black cat with large eyes, green inner ears and a dark blue mouth. In his other spirit form, he grows extremely large with bristling fur and pupilless white eyes.

In his Elfin form, he takes the shape of a young boy with short white hair and green eyes. He has large black cat ears that are green on the inside, similar to his cat form. In The Legend of Luo Xiaohei, he wears black clothes and is able to grow black feathered wings on command. [3]

In The Legend of Hei, his main outfit consists of a blue top with a beige collar, a white short-sleeved shirt underneath, and a red sash tied around his waist. He wears black pants and shoes, and has bandages wrapped around his calves. At the beginning of the movie, he is shown to have black hair and a matching black tail. However, during the movie's events, he starts to hide his tail and his hair turns white, as seen in the series. [5]

Meeting Fengxi and Wuxian Luo Xiaohei Movie1 Xiaohei's early life in the forest

Xiaohei was an elfin born in a forest. He lived there for around six years, until the forest was destroyed by human industrialization. Xiaohei was forced to live hidden in human cities for a while, until one night, when he was found by a group of humans, who tried to attack him. Xiaohei tried to defend himself, but he was saved by an elfin named Fengxi.

Luo Xiaohei Movie2 Meeting Fengxi

Xiaohei and Fengxi traveled to a remote island, where Fengxi offered Xiaohei shelter, food, and friendship. In the island, Xiaohei met Xuhuai, Tianhu and Luozhu, and Hei began to consider the place a new home. However, the following morning, the island was attacked by a human named Wuxian, who wanted to capture Fengxi and his friends. Everyone ran away, but Xiaohei chose to attack Wuxian, and was left behind[1].

Once everyone had left, Wuxian captured Xiaohei, and created a raft to get out of the island. Xiaohei wanted to kill Wuxian, but he didn’t really know why Wuxian had attacked them in the first place. Wuxian forced Xiaohei to join him in the raft, and the the two sailed to the ocean. They sailed for many days, during which Wuxian realized Xiaohei had two abilities: he could control metal, and he could use the rare and powerful “Domain”. Xiaohei lowered his defenses, and Wuxian began to teach him how to manipulate metal. During their training, Xioahei learned about Spiritual Realms: magical spaces that every single living being has, where you are in complete control[1].

Once they got to land, Xiaohei tried to run away, however, but Wuxian captured him once again. Wuxian wanted Hei to go to the Elfin Guild, an organization created to allow Elfins to peacefully live among humans, but Xiaohei mistrusted them due to their attack to Fengxi. Xiaohei felt like humans had destroyed his home, and he wanted revenge against them. While Wuxian led Xiaohei to the Guild, they met other Guild employees: elfins named Ruoshui, Hualun, Zhaoyue, Tianjie and Jiulao. The elfins told Xiaohei that he had to go to the Guild to judge it with his own eyes, and that humans weren’t all that bad. Eventually, Xiaohei admitted that he didn’t want to kill every human, and that he didn’t want to do anything bad: Xiaohei simply wanted his home back[1].

Eventually, Xiaohei and Wuxian reached Long You city, where they met an elfin named Ziluolan. She wasn’t a Guild employee, but was instead living among humans, disguised as one of them. After that, Hei and Wuxian took the metro, but once they got in a car, the place was attacked. Two rogue elfins named A-He and Yezi tried to kidnap Xiaohei. Working together, they managed to stop them, and Xiaohei found himself defending humans without even thinking about it. After Yezi and A-He had been stopped, the metro car was attacked by Fengxi, Xuhuai, Tianhu and Luozhu. This time, they managed to grab Xiaohei, and left the place, leaving Wuxian alone.[1]

Luo Xiaohei Movie3 Betrayed by Fengxi

Fengxi led Xioahei to a rooftop in the city. There, he explained to Hei that he wanted to take the city back, since it had been his home long ago. He told Xiaohei to remember that it had been the humans who had drove them out in the first place. Hei remembered… but still didn’t think pushing them away was the right thing to do. Hei thought they could simply stay away from the humans, find another island… but Fengxi had heard enough. Fengxi didn’t mind living elsewhere, but at the end of the day, they would end up homeless, eventually. After that, Fengxi captured Hei, and used a secret power to steal his Domain ability from him. This ability allowed the user to create an external Spiritual Realm, essentially becoming a god in the real world. Fengxi wanted to cover the city with the Domain, becoming its new ruler. This event turned Xioahei’s hair white[1].

The group was quickly found by Wuxian, who retrieved Xiaohei, but Fengxi managed to get away. Unless Hei was able to recover the Domain, his body would weaken until his death, since the Domain was connected to Hei’s Spiritual Realm. Wuxian left Hei in the care of elfins named Panjing, Guanxuan and Yifeng, and left to take care of the Fengxi. Xiaohei’s Domain, now controlled by Fengxi, was summoned and it grew in size until multiple city blocks were covered by it. The Guild managed to evacuate most humans, but multiple buildings were destroyed during the incident, and many people were trapped inside the Domain as well. While Xioahei was losing his energy, he managed to teleport inside the Domain, where he saw Wuxian fighting against Fengxi. Hurt at Fengxi’s betrayal, Xioahei joined Wuxian, and the two defeated Fengxi by working together. Hei recovered control of his Domain, and it disappeared. Afterwards, Fengxi decided to sacrifice himself by turning his body into a big lush forest in the middle of the city. Xiaohei was left unsure of Fengxi’s morality[1].

Luo Xiaohei Movie4 Becoming Wuxian's apprentice

A while later, Xiaohei, Wuxian, Ruoshui, Yifeng, Panjing, Guanxuan, Jiulao and an elfin named Nezha traveled to the Elfin Guild. Xioahei found the place fascinating, but has disheartened when he realized Wuxian wouldn’t live there. Xiaohei asked to leave with Wuxian, instead, and Wuxian accepted Hei as his apprentice, smiling[1].

Soon afterwards, Wuxian took a test to obtain a car driving licence. Xiaohei, Xiaorui and many other elfins from the Guild went to see Wuxian take the test. Wuxian parked his car slightly wrong, but corrected it using his powers, so he obtained the licence. [6]

After becoming Wuxian’s apprentice, Xiaohei decided he wanted to become an Executor for the Guild, the same job Wuxian had. For this end, Wuxian prepared a series of tests for Xiaohei, and told him he’d become an Executor if he passed them[2]. Xiaohei’s first mission was to steal an item called the Shining Pearl, which was hidden inside the Spiritual Realm of an old elfin deity called Laojun. Then, Xiaohei was to use to Pearl to force Laojun to leave his Realm.

Using his teleportation abilities, Xiaohei entered Laojun’s realm and managed to steal the Pearl. However, during the heist, Xiaohei was attacked by an elfin named Diting, who was protecting the Realm. Hei was seriously injured, and had to resort to staying in his small-cat form for the foreseable future. The damaged Hei ran towards Lingxi city, and fell asleep inside a cardboard box[3].

When he woke up, Hei realized a human girl named Luo Xiaobai had “adopted him”, mistaking Hei for a real cat. [3] Hei tried to run away, but the girl lived at the top of a tall apartment building, and escaping while in the cat form proved difficult. [7] One day, Hei met Shanxin, a girl who was friends with Xiaobai, and her cat, named Huangshou. Xiaohei protected Huangshou from a dog called Satan, and Huangshou fell in love with Hei. [8] Soon after, Xioahei accidentally fell from the roof, and had the chance to run away. However, after living with Xiaobai and seeing her take care of him, Xiaohei developed a bond with the girl, and he decided to return to her. [9]

Luo Xiaohei Episode 6 Meeting A-Gen

Eventually, Xiaobai and Xiaohei left the city to spend the summer vacation in the countryside, where Xiaobai’s grandpa lived. In the countryside, Hei met A-Gen, a mysterious young man who lived with Xiaobai’s grandpa. Once A-Gen was alone with Xioahei, he revealed to Hei that he was an elfin too. [4] Using a tree fairy, Xioahei and A-Gen shared their memories with each other, and became friends. [10] In the countryside, Xioahei also met Bidiu, a chamecavy that lived with A-Gen. Xiaohei, who could speak with animals using telepathy, helped Bidiu live among humans. [11]

However, soon after their arrival, Diting appeared at grandpa’s house, demanding Xioahei give back the Shining Pearl. Using his elfin power to manipulate water, A-Gen fought Diting with the help of Xiaohei. [12] Eventually, the fight was stopped by Laojun, who called to let Diting know he wanted to personally talk with Xiaohei and the rest. [13]

Xiaohei, A-Gen, Diting and Xiaobai travelled to Laojun’s Realm, and gained an audience with him. Laojun admitted that stealing the Pearl wasn’t a problem, actually, since it was a challenge he had posed to other elfins hundreds of years ago. Laojun had forgotten his own vow, and thus Diting had gone after the Pearl due to a simple misunderstanding. Following Wuxian’s mission, Xiaohei asked to return the Pearl in exchange for Laojun leaving his Realm. Laojun, however, refused, saying he had made a vow to stay inside his home for another sixty years. [14]

Luo Xiaohei Episode 11 Xiaohei and A-Gen talk with Laojun

While they talked, Laojun’s realm was invaded by two elfins named A-Xian and Moss, who wanted to steal some objects from it. [15] Following Laojun’s request, A-Gen and Xioahei fought off the invaders.[16] During the struggle, Xiaobai managed to see Xiaohei turning into a giant cat, and realized Hei was an elfin, too. Eventually, the invaders apologized for their intrusion and left, gifting a Wood Core to A-Gen. Xiaohei was left quite damaged due to the transformation he had gone through. As a reward for his efforts, Laojun gave Xiaohei a healing spell that would heal his original wounds in few days, and gave Xiaobai the Blue-Jade plate, an item that would allow her to teleport once every month. After that, everyone returned to grandpa’s house. Xiaohei was also allowed to keep the Shining Pearl for himself. [17]

Luo Xiaohei Episode 16 Xiaohei, A-Gen and Fenmo meet Muluo

Since grandpa’s house had been destroyed by Diting and a recent storm, everyone spent some days living at the house of Xiaobai’s uncle. Xiaohei spent the following days recovering from his wounds, using Laojun’s magic. One day, they were approached by a fairy named Fenmo.[14] She had sensed the energy of the Shining Pearl, and had gone after it, since she was desperately looking for something that could help a friend of her, who had gone sick. Hearing her story, A-Gen and Xiaohei agreed to go see her friend, to see if they could help him. They travelled to Lingfeng Mountain, where they met Fenmo’s friend, a fairy called Qiguo. A-Gen realized Qiguo’s body had been posessed by someone else, but before they could do anything, Qiguo’s body-snatcher used a special ability which turned everyone really small, and hid himself. [18]After managing to find his hiding spot, Xiaohei and A-Gen fought against the enemy, [19]and once he was defeated, he returned their bodies to normal size. The body snatcher turned out to be an elfin immortal called Muluo, who had died three years ago. Using the Wood Core, A-Gen managed to create a new body for Muluo, who then apologized to Fenmo and Qiguo, and proposed to teach them. Muluo gave A-Gen a Spirit Stone as a reward, and Xiaohei and A-Gen returned to grandpa’s house. [20]

The following days, Xioahei and the rest worked to rebuild grandpa’s house. Xiaohei was unwillingly selected as the boss of every animal in the neigborhood when the animals were made aware of his strenght. [21] [22] However, since the town needed money to rebuild everything the storm had destroyed, A-Gen, Xiaohei, Xiaobai and Diting decided to visit the Elfin Guild on Laojun’s recommendation, who could help with the money.

The group visited Lingxi’s Guild Hall, which was directed by an elfin named Kali and his friend, Tubei. [23] They learned that the Guild helped elfins by giving them unlimited money, housing and food, as long as the Elfins kept a low profile among humans, and answered the Guild’s calls. [24] During their visit, they also met three elfins named Mr. Fu, Qingqiu and Jiuxian, who hated humans, and never left the Guild’s walls. [25]

Luo Xiaohei Episode 24 Fu, Qingqiu and Jiuxian face Xiaohei and his friends

Afterwards, Xiaohei, Xiaobai and Diting went to visit Shanxin and Huangshou. [26] The following day, the girls and Xioahei went to a comics and videogames convention, where they met Diting. [27] [28] Not long after, the group realized that Fu, Qingqiu and Jiuxian were following them, trying to steal the Shining Pearl from Xiaohei. He was reluctant to give it to them, but once Qingqiu revealed they needed it to heal the sickness of one of their friends, Xiaohei agreed to give it to them for free. [29]

Luo Xiaohei Episode 28 Xiaohei informs Xiaobai he'll leave

Once they came back to grandpa’s, Xiaohei managed to completely heal from his injuries, returning to his Elfin form. [30] He was now free to leave and continue with Wuxian’s missions, but Xioahei felt reluctant about it, as he had developed a strong bond with Xiaobai and his friends. As he thought about it, Hei realized a human was stealing the dogs from the neigborhood, and stopped him. While doing so, Hei met Niepa, a man-eating Elfin. Xiaohei wanted to fight Niepa, but he ran away before he could do so. [31] The next day, grandpa gave Xiaohei a strong alcohol, and Hei was drunk for a little while. That night, he turned into a little kid and told Xiaobai that he would be leaving. [5]

The second and third missions Luo Xiaohei Episode 36 Xiaohei and his friends' avatars inside the All Living Creatures game

Hei went to Lingxi’s Guild Hall, where Kali gave him a scroll with Wuxian’s second mission. Kali read it to Xiaohei, and he was amazed to find his second mission was to “make a human friend you can trust”. With that knowledge, Xiaohei returned to Xiaobai and told her about it. [32] After that, the scroll asked Xioahei to remain with his friend until a certain date, when his third mission would be revealed. As they waited for that date, Xiaohei, Xiaobai and A-Gen decided to try playing a virtual-reality game called All Living Creatures. Surprisingly, the game had been developed by elfins and allowed you to use elfin magic. [33] The group played with Shanxin, who also learned that Xiaohei was an elfin. As they played, the group realized that the hardest part about the game was its death mechanic: when dying, the players loses all progress and his character is eliminated forever, forcing you to start again with an all-new character. [34] [35]

Eventually, the day of Xiaohei’s third mission arrived, and the mission turned out to be a mission inside the game. [36] And it was an extremely difficult mission, to boost. It asked Xiaohei to reach level 200 (something no other player had done before), to finish all high level side quests, to obtain all exclusive artifacts and to kill multiple high-level players. Althought it was challenging, the group decided to give it a go. Inside the game, Xiaohei was free to use his elfin abilities, and that granted him an advantage over other human players. Despite having a low level, Xiaohei was really skilled, and often defeated others with little struggle. While playing, the group met players Dazhi and Longyan. [37] [38] [39] [40] [41] Eventually, their progress was interrupted when the group was attacked by a faction of players above level 100. A-Gen, Xiaobai and Shanxin were eliminated, and Xiaohei was forced to fight alone against seven strong enemies. [42] [43] Despite his abilities, Xiaohei was defeated. To his surprise, Wuxian interrupted the fight before Xiaohei could be eliminated, and he took Xiaohei to a safe place.

Luo Xiaohei Episode 40 Meeting Wuxian once again

Once they were alone, Wuxian informed Xiaohei he had failed at his mission, and wouldn’t be able to become an executor, at least for a while. Wuxian asked Xiaohei to be honest about his feelings, and Xiaohei admited he only wanted to become an executor so he could stay near Wuxian. But now, Xiaohei had made new friends, and he wanted to be near them, as well. Wuxian told Xiaohei they could live together, and that Hei could start school with Xiaobai, as a little kid should. [2]

Personality He is shy and friendly, but he can also be feisty and rowdy.

Abilities Metal Manipulation As someone with a metal spiritual type, Xiaohei is able to manipulate metal. He was able to cultivate this ability with the mentorship from Wuxian.

Flight Shown in the animated series, Xiaohei's clones (Heixiu) are able to shapeshift into wings and allow him to fly.

Heixiu Xiaohei's tail is able to break up into small segments called Heixiu. They are able to think for themselves and listen to his commands. They are also able to transform into small birds and Xiaohei is able to sense their location and telepathically communicate with them regardless of distance. He is also able to switch locations with them via teleportation. When they rejoin his tail, he gains any knowledge they obtained when they were separated.

Teleportation He is able to swap places with any Heixiu at any distance. He is also able to create invisible portals that connect space within a 5 meters radius of himself and his Heixiu.[23] These portals can be angled to change the outgoing direction of the thing being teleported to some degree, but this thing is otherwise unaffected.[35]

Shapeshifting He is able to shapeshift between his small kitten form, a large cat form and his Elfin form at will.

Barrier Xiaohei is able to make an invisible barrier.[26]

Telepathy In his cat form, he is able to communicate with people or animals through telepathy.[26]

Domain (lost) Every living being has a spiritual realm. Within a spiritual realm, everything is under the owner's control and they are able to manipulate its surroundings and control the people within the realm. Domain is an ability that projects the user's spiritual realm to the outside world, essentially turning them into a "God."

Because spatial type abilities are directly connected to the owner's spiritual realm, Xiaohei loses this power (and his second spiritual realm) permanently when it is taken by Fengxi.

Relationships Luo Xiaobai When Xiaohei is injured trying to steal the Shining Pearl, he gets picked up by Luo Xiaobai who mistakes him for a homeless cat. He reluctantly decides to stay with her while recovering from his weakened state. He quickly warms up to her and keeps her out of danger.

At first, he keeps his identity as a spirit a secret from Xiaobai, unsure of how she would feel towards him if she knew and likely to abide by the spirits rule to hide their true identities. She soon finds out when Xiaohei transforms into his larger cat form to protect her from enemies.[16] Despite learning this, her feelings towards Xiaohei do not change since she actually likes Elfin after growing up with A Gen. They only grow closer following the events of episode 27, when Xiaohei shows her his Elfin form.

A Gen Xiaohei and A Gen first meet when Xiaobai goes to stay with him and their grandpa while her parents are on vacation. A Gen quickly catches onto the fact that Xiaohei is actually a spirit and tests him by attacking him with his ice powers. Because of that confrontation, Xiaohei is initially hostile towards him, believing that A Gen has an ulterior motive and has secretly taken the place of Xiaobai's real cousin.

With the help of a flower fairy, they're able to share their memories with each other and Xiaohei grows to trust him. He soon realizes that Xiaobai is aware that A Gen is a spirit and is the reason why Xiaobai is not afraid of spirits.

Huangshou An ordinary gray tabby cat who immediately befriended him after Xiaohei saved him from a dog named Satan.[8] Xiaohei is not too fond of him and finds him overly happi.

Bidiu Xiaohei is often described as Bidiu's "nemesis." He is the only one who is able to easily capture him and keep him out of trouble. He's shown to be fond of him and leaves Heixiu behind to watch after him when he's not around.

Laojun Xiaohei is sent by Wuxian to steal the Shining Pearl from Laojun's spiritual realm. He later returns with it when Diting brings him, A Gen, and Luo Xiaobai to see him. Per Laojun's vow, the person who steals the pearl is able to keep or exchange it for a favor. Per Wuxian's instruction, he asks Laojun to break his current vow of staying secluded in his tower for 100 years which Laojun refuses.[15]

Trivia Xiaohei initially had two spiritual realms, which is an incredibly rare case especially for a spatial type. The only other person who's mentioned to have two spiritual realms is Xuanli. He is illiterate and frequently has to ask other people to read things to him. He still has his cat ears in his human form because he's unable to hide them. He doesn’t know his exact birthday, so Wuxian picked one out for him.
