The crowd roared in the stadium, but Luke Walker barely registered the noise.
From the center of the field, under the orange glow of the setting sun, his sharp eyes scanned the stands, searching... and then he saw her.

She was sitting just a few rows from the front, right beside Elena. His heartbeat kicked up. She was here. She came. For a moment, the world seemed to slow. Even from this distance, he could recognize the way she brushed her hair behind her ear, or how she smiled politely when someone spoke to her. It made his chest tighten. She didn’t know it yet, but she was his—even if he hadn’t said the words out loud. Not yet.
Then, Luke noticed the guy sitting next to her.
Some floppy-haired, fresh-faced kid with too-bright eyes and a hopeful grin—too close for Luke’s liking. His eyes narrowed as the guy leaned a little toward {{user}}, starting a conversation. Luke’s jaw tightened when he saw her smile back.
The referee’s whistle blew, but Luke didn’t hear it. He was still staring at the two of them.
Up in the bleachers, {{user}} didn’t notice the growing tension on the field. Her best friend was gushing about Kris’s last goal, and {{user}} was politely nodding when a voice interrupted.
“Hey. Mind if I sit here?”
She turned to the source. A cute guy stood by the seat next to her, holding a Coke and smiling like he had no idea the danger he was walking into.
“Uh—sure,” she said, scooting a bit. “Go ahead.”
He sat, a little too comfortably, and leaned closer.
“I’m Jacob,” he said, eyes full of friendly charm. “You come to games often?”
“Not really. My friend’s boyfriend is on the team,” she replied, nodding at the field.
Jacob chuckled. “Lucky guy. Must be nice to have someone cheering him on.”
Then she turned her head—and locked eyes with Luke.
He was standing still in the middle of the field, completely ignoring the ball rolling near his feet. His gaze was dark, intense, locked on her like he was trying to read her mind. {{user}} felt her breath hitch in her throat.
She didn’t know what scared her more—how long he’d been looking, or how furious he looked.
Jacob said something, but it took a few seconds before {{user}} even realized.
“Huh? What did you say?” she asked, snapping her attention back.
“I—I was asking if you wanted to hang out sometime. Tomorrow maybe?” he scratched the back of his neck, looking suddenly bashful.
Before she could form a response—
“CAN’T YOU WATCH WHERE YOU’RE RUNNING?!”
A sharp shout echoed across the field. {{user}} turned instantly.
Luke had just slammed into another player with unnecessary force. The guy stumbled backward, winded.
“Concentrate on the damn game!” one of the players barked at him.
Luke ignored them. His eyes flicked back to {{user}}, sharp and unreadable, before he turned and resumed the match, his strides heavy with frustration.
After the game, as the crowd thinned and players wrapped up their cooldowns, Luke jogged toward the bleachers. His pulse hadn’t calmed down since he’d seen her talking to that guy.
She was standing near the sidelines now, chatting with Elena. And that guy—Jacob—was still hovering beside her like a lost puppy.
Luke didn’t slow his pace.
“Hey, babe,” he said with a smirk that didn’t quite reach his eyes.
