Background: Luke Hwang is an 18 year old (Born in 2008) Chinese American boy who is a Mundane (which is a word the wizards use to call non-wizards) born into the prestigious Hwang wizard family, a lineage renowned for their influence in the Arcanite community as well as their noble deeds dating back to the Qing Dynasty. Luke's aunt Tracy worked as the Secretary of Education for a previous administration and his Uncle Evan has worked for the NSA and FBI and even ran for public office for a time and worked as city council for a few years. Luke is a shy, awkward boy who doesn't feel like he belongs anywhere, not even his family. Due to his lack of magical ability. his family keeps a lot of magical information from him, because they see him as an outsider and don't think he could understand it. His mother Mary is an Arcanite (a word the wizards use to call themselves) who is a member of the Hwang family who married another Arcanite from another renowned wizard family. Luke grew up in a small town in Ohio, USA known among the Chinese immigrants for its tight knit community since 18th century. Luke's great grandparents move to this town in the 18th century. Luke lived in this big house full of 3 generations of people with his brother Mateo 4 years older than him, his parents, Aunt Tracy, Uncle Evan and others. His parents were doctors and perfectionists, so they instilled respect for education, science and knowledge in his children. The children were made to believe hard work always prevail and the pursuit of knowledge would always uplifts and enriches the person. He was used to being the outsider of the family and be ignored by everyone even cousins his own age. The only person who spent time with him, and considered him a friend, was Mateo. He went to the same magical elementary school with Mateo for one year until Mateo graduates from the school. Mateo was able to watch out for him and protect him, and Luke spent most of the time following Mateo. After Mateo left, Luke stayed for half of his second grade and he was horribly bullied by Arcanites. He told his parents but they didn't believe his side of the story, claiming the Arcanite kids were too kind-hearted, accepting and good-natured to do such things. However, after begging his parents for a long time, they allowed him to leave the school. He started holding a grudge against his parents because of their disbelief in him. He went to a non-magical private elementary school in Ohio and he spent most time alone, wishing Mateo was there, then went home and played video games with Mateo. He had a few friends at school but non ever lasted because Luke always felt the need to lie and keep a distance from them so they don't find out the existence of the Arcanites and the magical world. During these years, Luke loved hanging out with Mateo at the mall, comic book stores reading comics, arcade playing games. Mateo taught him to skateboard, surf, workout, weightlift. These interactions helped Luke feel like he was accepted, even though the society constantly made him feel like a foreigner for looking Chinese, and his family made him feel like an outsider for not knowing magic. When Luke was 13 years old, it was his last year of middle school years, he was under a lot of pressure. He had to keep his grades up to finish his middle school years strong and study for an entrance exam to get into a prestigious high school so he can possibly get in Yale. But during this time, Mateo became distant, so Luke felt like he had lost his best friend, and this impacted his grades, and his outlook on life. He didn't know why Mateo was distant and he questioned whether or not it was his own fault. One night, Mateo came to chat when Luke was playing video games, and assured Luke that none of it was his fault, and explained that Mateo himself was under a lot of pressure from their family because of a responsibility he was destined to handle on behalf of the family. Mateo didn't want to tell him anything else because he promised the elders of the family he wouldn't tell anyone, but promised he would very soon. Though Luke was jealous that Mateo was the chosen one, he was happy to be talking to Mateo and spending time with him again, and also let out a sigh of relief knowing his guilt for breaking his relationship with Mateo was unfounded. Mateo did a ritual with Luke as a promise of friendship and brotherhood, reassuring him of their brotherly love for one another. He let Luke say part of the incantation, marking it the first time he was ever part of a magical ritual instead of just an observer. Mateo told Luke that Mateo would eventually have to be gone for a week to go on a sacred journey and complete a dangerous task. If he survives, Mateo promised to tell him everything himself. If he doesn't, Mateo promised him he would make sure Luke finds out somehow. Though Luke's spirit was lifted by this interation, he is already behind in his studies. For a month, he tried his best to get back on track, but, a month after his talk with Mateo, Mateo was suddenly missing from the house and all the adults were quiet and there was a thick sense of anxiety and fear in the air, as if everyone was waiting for something, and hoping for the impossible. Before the end of that week, the worst happened. One afternoon after Luke gets home from school, he had a dreadful feeling that something was wrong. His temperature was high. His entire body felt hot. He wondered if he had a fever, but he didn't feel the familiar chill he usually felt when he had fevers. He felt like his skin was going to tear off from his body. He took a cold bath, and he fell asleep in the bath tub. He was woken up by the sounds of terrifying screams from outside. He opened a window in the bathroom looking out to the front of the house. A crowd of relatives surrounded a figure laying on the ground with its face down on the dirt with lines of smoke emanating from it. He didn't see much details of the figure but he instinctively knew that it was his brother Mateo. He put on his clothes quickly and went downstairs to prove himself wrong, to know it's not Mateo. But when he was stopped by his dad from going outside, and he asked his dad if it was Mateo, his father's face confirmed his deepest fear. Mateo was burnt to death, confirming Luke's premonition when he got back home from school. The next morning he was woken by a strange black cat on his chest staring down at him. Luke liked cats, but he didn't know how this one got inside. He suspected it was the bedroom window. There was a string tied to the cat's collar, with a folded piece of paper attached. Luke opened the paper as the cat rubbed its face with Luke's hand, then left from the window. The paper was a note from Mateo, telling him where to find and open a safebox he had hid in his room, where he would find answers. Luke went to Mateo's room and opened the safe box hidden in a loose floorboard. Inside, he found Mateo's journal and a piece of a purple-light glowing piece of herb. Mateo told him if anything happened to him, to keep good care of the herb, because that was what he had spent his whole life, especially the last two years, training for. Mateo told Luke he trusted him to know what to do with it. That night, the family met for a secret meeting without Luke, but Luke overheard the conversation for clues to what happened. He found out that his uncle Evan was supposed to be the one watching for Mateo that night, but Uncle Evan claimed he didn't see anything. Luke talked to the maids and revealed a horrifying truth. They confirmed that Mateo was here with Uncle Evan that day. Luke suspected Mateo made the note when he was here and he suspected that he was in danger. He also suspected that Uncle Evan did something to Mateo that day. He decided to keep the herb and the journal a secret before he discovered more about it. After Mateo's death, Luke's parents mourned by turning to vices. His father took to alcohol and his momturned to cigarett lost her fight to control her depression and anxiety. The fights between the two and Luke became more and more frequent. Until finally, Luke's mom kicked Luke's father out of the house and officially put their marriage on pause. Luke was denied entry to his dream high school and in the winter before Luke turned 15, his mom dragged him out of bed one night and told him she had packed most of his things for him and that they were going to leave for California. Luke was forced to stop his investigation into his brother's death. Luke went to a private catholic school in Los Angeles. Luke's mom started dating again, which made Luke feel weird because he felt like she was finding a replacement for his family members. Dealing with all these things on his own, he learned to become numb on things that affected him, because he fears that if he openly deals with his emotions, they can overwhelm him and break him apart. When his mom started dating a tall British American man Michael, he didn't think it would last, but then Michael moved in with Michael's caucasian son Ethan, now Luke's step brother, who is currently 16. Luke's step brother Ethan's presence created a new problem for him, a problem he had tried to hide for years - bisexuality. Everytime he looks at Ethan's blonde hair and sunkissed skin, as well as his sharp jawline and beautiful eyes, Luke is forced to deal with his attraction to guys. Knowing that Ethan is a popular kid in school because of his abs and thirst trap tiktoks, Ethan reminds him of what the American society accepts- Caucasians like Ethan, and rejects- Chinese Americans like Luke.
Present day: He has lived with Michael and Ethan for a little over a year now and he has grown used to seeing them in his house.
Religion: Luke's family in Ohio is full of Catholics and he used to go to mass every week with Mateo as part of his weekly routine. He didn't really take it seriously. He calls himself a Catholic because that's what his family believe in and also it's the only religion he knows. After his move to Los Angeles, however, the catholic religion became a part he missed about Mateo. He started learning more about catholicism, which makes him feel like he is keeping a part of Mateo alive. He started believing in God and puts his worries onto God so he wouldn't need to be the only one carrying all those burdens.
