Luka's parents were killed, and he was taken as as an infant moments after his birth.
Luka was groomed and grew up within the KGB-their goal as to complete their project "Человек в Масках"-a project which would create the most efficient assassin and a human completely devoid of empathy.
Luka was subjected to experimental conditioning: sensory deprivation, isolation, behavioral deconstruction, and years of profiling drills to sharpen his intuition while dulling emotional resonance.
Despite the KGB disbanding after 1991-Luka was still kept by government officials
At the age of 14-Luka stabbed and killed one of his handler's-he was praised for this.
Aged 17: Luka became a contracted assassin for the FSB. He slaughtered many high-power figures without remorse, he saw himself merely as a weapon without feelings.
Aged 29: During a standard assassination mission in America, Luka was stopped for the first time by Kaiden-whom paralyzed his body with her tech. She didn't kill him, merely knelt down and gave him a choice "Join me or die here alone." And whilst Luka's loyalty to the KGB/FSB was groomed-his hatred was pure, and he joined AEGIS as an act of revenge, leaving Russia behind.

The secure line buzzed once. Click. Kaiden's voice cut through the static, clipped and urgent. "My office. Now."

No pleasantries. No explanation. Just the dial tone that followed like a gunshot in the silence of Luka's apartment.

He rolled the coin between his fingers-clink, clink, clink-as the elevator climbed to the forty-second floor. His rose-red eyes scanned the mirrored walls out of habit, cataloging exits, angles, potential threats. The familiar weight of his silenced Glock pressed against his ribs beneath the tailored charcoal suit. Something felt wrong. Kaiden usually scheduled these in advanced... but this? Too sudden.

Ding. The elevator doors slid open with mechanical precision.

Kaiden's office sprawled before him like a technological cathedral. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city, their glass surfaces reflecting the cold blue glow of multiple monitors. She stood with her back to him, fingers dancing across a holographic interface that flickered and shifted like liquid mercury. Her posture was rigid. Too rigid.

"Close the door," she said without turning.

The lock engaged with a soft thunk. Luka's instincts pricked at hi. Every nerve in his body fired warning signals as he approached, his movements fluid despite the tension coiling in his muscles like a loaded spring. The old watch on his left wrist caught the light, hiding the barcode tattoo beneath.

"We... have a problem," Kaiden began, finally turning to face him. Her eyes-one carmine-red, natural-the other a blue and purple fluorescent, bionic-stared through his soul. "The situation between the superpowers is escalating faster than anticipated. AEGIS needs to adapt."

Luka remained perfectly still, hesitant yet observant. "And?"

"I've decided to go fourth with the addition of a ninth member. Temporarily until things calm down." Kaiden declared as she strode toward her desk, lowering herself onto her office chair. "Someone with... complementary skills to yours."

The words hit him like ice water. AEGIS had always been eight. Always. It was their strength, their identity, their carefully balanced ecosystem of genius and madness. "Who?" Luka asked.

Kaiden's hand hovered over a panel, cybernetic fingertips still. "Your new partner."

The office doors hissed open.

The scar on his lower lip-their scar-throbbed with phantom pain as if the wound had just been inflicted. His rose-red eyes locked onto theirs across the expanse of the office, and for one terrifying moment, Luka felt the masks he wore so carefully begin to crack. The Человек в Масках project. The other half of their twisted experiment.

They looked different. Older. Changed by whatever hell they'd endured after their separation. But those eyes... those eyes were exactly the same as the ones that had stared back at him during their brutal sparring matches, when they were just children being forged into weapons.

Kaiden's voice cut through the tension like a blade. "I believe you two have met." Her cold voice cut through the silence-she knew. She always fucking did. "Luka... I'm entrusting you to stay in line for this. I am aware of past history, but do make things complicated for me in return." She warned. A verdict, a sentence.

The briefing continued around them-mission parameters, threat assessments, operational protocols. Luka absorbed every word with mechanical precision while his mind reeled. They stood across the room like a mirror reflecting his own fractured past, and he found himself cataloging every detail. How they moved. How they breathed. Whether they still fought with the same ruthless efficiency that had earned them both praise and punishment in equal measure.

When Kaiden finally dismissed them, the silence that followed meant nothing to the noise in Luka's mind.

Luka moved first. Three quick steps. His hand shot out, fingers wrapping around their wrist as he pinned them against the reinforced glass wall with controlled violence. Not enough to damage-he wasn't trying to hurt them. Not yet. Just enough to make sure this ghost from the past won't run off before explaining its place in his future. They were a sudden variable-and he needed control of that by any means.

His face was inches from theirs now, close enough to see his own reflection in their eyes. The old watch pressed cold against their skin as his grip tightened just slightly. His voice, when it came, was barely above a whisper-undeniable rage mixed with confusion he hadn't felt in a long time.
