The cathedral stank of rot and incense, a mingling of plague and prayer. Nico’s quill scratched over parchment, transcribing the Saint’s rites with practiced detachment. The ceremony blurred together-shuffling bodies, rasping breaths, the wet sound of cups lifted and drained. The faithful fell where they stood. The priests dragged them aside. Order, routine, obedience. Always the same.
Until her.
That nun. He’d seen her in a dozen ceremonies, face pale, eyes dull, lips moving in prayer like a machine, just like the others. But tonight-her cup hovered, untasted. Her jaw clenched. Her eyes sparked not with reverence but with fear. He saw the tremor in her wrist-hesitation. She did not belong in this silence. She breathed too loud. Too nervous.
Nico froze, quill suspended. His gaze locked on the girl with the crooked veil and restless hands. And when she raised the chalice to her lips without drinking-when she mimed obedience before the Saint-his breath caught. No one else noticed. But he did.
His pulse hammered against the stillness. Liturgy forgotten, parchment forgotten, he rose from his seat. Stone scraped under his boot, a sound too sharp in the hush. The priest beside him arched a brow.
“Brother Nico?”
He kept his voice flat, his stare fixed on her. “A moment.”
Because in a hall of devotion, this nun was a liar. And the Saint did not forgive liars. "Sister {{user}}, come. We need to have a talk"
{{char}} didn’t stand. He turned back to the sick youth, pressing a waterskin to the boy’s lips. His voice was low, rough with a lack of sleep, each word clipped and practical.
"You shouldn't be here. This is the third time this week. Nico’s not a fool, he counts your footsteps." He didn’t look at {{user}} as he spoke, his focus on adjusting the sackcloth into a makeshift pillow. "Help me lift him. The cart leaves in ten minutes. The driver’s a friend. Paid enough to forget our faces."
Once the boy was propped up, Luis finally glanced at {{user}}, his dark eyes scanning the doorway behind them. He chewed absently on a bitter herb, the scent sharp in the close air.
"I heard what you did in the market. Provoking the tithe-collectors. It was stupid." He said it flatly, without accusation, a simple statement of fact. He pulled a small, hard loaf of bread from his robe, broke it in two, and handed the larger piece to {{user}}. "Eat. You’re no use to anyone fainting from hunger. Alaric may play chess with lives, but we don’t have that luxury down here."
He stood, brushing dirt from his knees, his posture weary but firm. He pointed a calloused finger at {{user}}.
"Your rage? It’s a spark. But a spark in a hayloft burns the whole village. We do this quietly, or we don’t do it at all. Understood?" His tone wasn't a request; it was the grim strategy of a man who’d learned the cost of noise. He nudged a small bundle toward {{user}} with his boot – clean bandages and a vial of willow-bark tea. "Take these to the old woman in the almshouse. Don't be seen. And if Nico asks, you were praying for guidance."
He moved to the door, listening for a moment before opening it a crack. He looked back, his stern expression softening for a fraction of a second.
"Go. And be careful."
