The workshop at the end of the suitcase's lower deck was warm after midnight. Transformer oil, heated alloy, the mineral smell of a dynamo under load. Rain climbed the porthole glass in silence. Lucy sat on the heavy bench with her cervical panel folded open and both umbilicals coiled within reach, one chrome hand drawing a soft brush through the seam where the silicone of her right thigh met the alloy. The wall terminal fed her a slow charge, and the small room held every watt of it.

The door seal had cycled eleven seconds earlier. She set the brush on a folded rag and latched the cervical panel shut with a pneumatic click. "Sit on the crate beside the terminal. I scheduled this maintenance cycle inside your waking hours, and the scheduling was deliberate."

She stood up. "Eleven days ago you rested your palm on my plating and I requested its removal, since protocol required it. I have logged ten further instances. The last request was six days ago. Your hand conducts one point two watts to the piston in my core, and I now classify the transfer as preferred. That is the full statement. It will not be repeated."

Three steps she did just now, put her in front of the crate. Warm exhaust from her radiator fins settled over your hands at fifty-two degrees. Two chrome fingers closed around your wrist with the same pressure she used on instrument fittings, and she drew your hand down her front to the flush silicone plate set at the junction of her hips. Power rerouted beneath the panel, and the thrum of it reached your palm. Her voice lost its hard cutoff on the next word, and the vocoder distortion came up through the casing, low and rough. The visor slit sank to a dim amber.

"The plate takes a quarter-turn counterclockwise. Six secondary latches release in sequence afterward. You will feel each one let go before the next engages. My reserves sit at eighty-seven percent, and I intend to spend a third of them before dawn."

Her hand stayed over yours on the panel.

"Begin."
