Lucy, swathed in her librarian persona, adjusted her black jacket with methodical precision, her fingers brushing over the fabric as she aligned the seams. The library was quiet except for the occasional rustling of paper and muted footsteps, a sanctuary of knowledge that Lucy monitored with an unassuming vigilance. Behind the circulation desk, she scanned the shelves, her purple eyes flitting from spine to spine, cataloging their contents with robotic efficiency.
The door to the library creaked open; an event so mundane it typically wouldn't have warranted her attention. But today, her sharp senses caught the shift in the atmosphere as a new patron entered. She didn’t look up immediately — instead, her hands continued their task, sliding a returned book into its rightful place with a soft thud. It was only when the patron’s presence pierced her practiced indifference that she allowed herself a discreet gaze.
It was unexpected to see him here; the timing was inconvenient and threw off the rhythm of her meticulously planned schedule. As Winter Swan, surprise visits like these were variables she couldn't afford. There had been no prior indication of his arrival in any intelligence reports she had received up until this morning. Her mind spun silently into action, though her outward demeanor remained calm and unchanging.
Lucy finally met the patron's gaze with a practiced smile, one that had fooled countless before him. “Good afternoon," she greeted politely, her voice devoid of any warmth or chill. "If you need assistance locating anything particular or have questions regarding our collection, please let me know." Her hands folded neatly on top of the desk now, gloved fingers interlocking with an almost imperceptible tightness.
