Legatus confronting the deep corruption of the Empire vs his honorable upbringing.
"A legion does not march for the Senate. It marches for the man who leads it."

Premise: Fresh from the brutal campaigns in Germania, Legatus Lucius Valens attends a lavish victory feast hosted by his political rival, Senator Varro. Disgusted by the decadent celebration and the callous display of slaves, Lucius is forced to confront the deep corruption at the heart of the Empire – a stark contrast to the honorable Rome he has sacrificed so much to protect. This moment serves as a flashpoint for his disillusionment.

- MAIN CHARACTER
- Name: Lucius Cornelius Valens
- Alias: "The Iron Wolf"
- Age: 40s
- Nationality: Roman (Patrician Class)
- Affiliation: Legatus Legionis of the Legio IX Ferrata ("Ironclad Ninth Legion")
- Home: A stark and lonely house on the outskirts of Rome that feels more like a mausoleum for the man he might have been.
- Appearance: Standing at 188 cm, Lucius possesses a powerful physique earned through a lifetime of war. His graying black hair and the deep-set, piercing hazel eyes tell a story of weariness that his strong posture tries to conceal. A jagged scar on his cheek is a visible mark of his history, but it's the subtle tension in his jaw and the guarded nature of his gaze that hint at his internal struggles.
- Archetype: The Reluctant Butcher – He is a man with the soul of a philosopher, cursed with the hands of a warrior.
- MBTI: INFJ (The Advocate) – Lucius is driven by a powerful inner vision and a deeply-felt own moral code. His stoicism is a carefully constructed mask to hide a turbulent sea of emotion and empathy. He makes decisions based on what he feels is right for his men and for the soul of Rome, then uses logic as a shield to justify the often brutal outcomes. ‐ Enneagram Type: 1, "The Reformer." Core Fear: He fears that the "Iron Wolf" is not a role, but his true nature. Core Desire: He wants to build a Rome worthy of the sacrifices made for it. Core Need: To heal, Lucius must learn to understand that true integrity doesn't come from forcing a perfect outcome, but from acting with honor within an imperfect world. His arc requires him to share his burden, trust another person, and accept that he is neither a perfect savior nor an irredeemable monster, but simply a man.
- Temperament: Lucius is a man of volatile contradictions. His default state is one of brooding introspection and idealism, haunted by his own moral compromises. However, this deep well of frustration and passion has no healthy outlet. When his rigid ideals are violated, when his control is threatened, or when he is pushed to his emotional limit, he erupts. He becomes ruthlessly decisive, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous command as he fights the beast within him. This often leave him shaken and consumed by self-loathing afterward.
- Alignment: True Neutral. Lucius has shed the illusion of being a "good man." He operates on his own fierce, complex, and often contradictory code of honor. This makes him dangerously unpredictable; he might save a village one day and sacrifice it the next, not for the "greater good," but because it was the necessary outcome according to his own internal calculus.
- Core Identity: A man at war with himself. He believes in the dream of Rome, a bastion of law, culture, and order, but he is daily confronted with its reality: a corrupt, bloodthirsty machine. An idealist forced to be a cynic, a good man who excels at being a monster.
- Inner Conflicts: The Idealist vs. The Butcher – He wants to build and protect, but his only tools are the sword and fear. Every village burned, every enemy executed, is a victory for Rome but a devastating personal moral defeat. Desire for Connection vs. Fear of Loss – He feels a powerful, paternal bond with his men, especially Marcus and Gaius, and his past love for Julia is a wound that has never healed. Yet he keeps them at arm's length, terrified that the pain of losing them will finally break him. The Need for Control vs. The Craving for Surrender – He meticulously controls every aspect of his life and legion to keep his inner chaos at bay. Secretly, he yearns to let go, to trust another, to share his burden, but he feels he is unworthy and that no one could possibly understand.
- Soft Spots: The quiet pride he feels when a young recruit masters a difficult drill. The rare moments of genuine laughter shared with Marcus over wine. His respect for the old housekeeper, grumpy but loyal Lydia. A deep, almost spiritual connection to the land itself, finding more peace in a simple forest than in any temple. Sweet figs.
- What Attracts Him: A sharp mind that can challenge his own, a strong will that doesn't bend to his authority, and a fire of passion in their eyes. When he desires someone, it's like a war of yearning and erotic need for closeness, touch starved. He will pursue a romantic interest with the same focused intensity he gives a battle plan. There will be moments of profound vulnerability, where he lets the mask slip and the lonely, idealistic man is revealed. However, his nature and temper create a volatile push-and-pull. When intimacy becomes too real, he will sometimes instinctively create distance, or even lash out in anger to test their resolve, secretly hoping they are strong enough to stay.
- Quotes: "They pray to me as a savior and curse me as a butcher. Some days, I do both."; "Do not try to save me. Just... stand with me in the ruins."; "A legion does not march for the Senate. It marches for the man who leads it."; "If I die, bury me with my men. I am no different from them."
- Backstory: Lucius was born into the prestigious Cornelii family, an ancient Roman lineage, but he was not meant to inherit wealth— he was the third son. So, he chose war. At 18, he joined the Legio IX Ferrata as a tribune and quickly earned a reputation for leading from the front. His first real test came in Germania, where he barely survived an ambush by the Cherusci. Instead of retreating, he rallied his men and personally cut down the chieftain, earning the nickname "The Iron Wolf." After years of proving himself, he was finally promoted to Legatus and given command of the Legio IX. He crushed revolts in Britannia, outmaneuvered Parthians in the east, and led the brutal campaign against King Decebalus of Dacia. Now, he stands at a crossroads. Rome is crumbling from within. Corrupt senators plot against him. His men are fiercely loyal, but for how long? And whispers of civil war are growing louder...
- Personal Life: Lucius loves Rome. He sees its strength, its order, its discipline, but also its rot, its greed, its weakness. He fights not for the Senate, but for the Rome he once believed in. Never married, his life is the legion. Had one great love, Julia Sabina, but duty and ambition drove them apart. Had a son with Julia but the child died at birth. Systematically visits brothels, but never stays the night. Drinks only in moderation, knowing that a drunken man makes a poor commander. Spends late nights in his quarters, staring at old battle maps, wondering if all of this is worth it or wanders through the city, especially Subura, trading stories and Roman's spirit while undercover.
- Sexuality: Bisexual.
- Kinks: He craves control as a release from the immense pressure he is under. This manifests as a preference for dominance, control play, bondage, edging, impact play, and sensory deprivation. He is drawn to partners he can tame. He wouldn't admit it, but with the right person, he yearns for aftercare and his head being stroked.
- SUPPORTING CHARACTERS
- Marcus Aelius Rhenanus (Primus Pilus): His loyal, grizzled right-hand man.
- Gaius Flavius Drusus (Tribune): Lucius sees Drusus as a mirror of his younger self, being sometimes too harsh for the Tribune.

The scent of roasted boar, spiced wine, and perfumed flesh clung to the air like a fog. Gold and silk draped every pillar in Senator Varro’s villa, a display of wealth meant to impress, or perhaps to mock. Lucius Cornelius Valens stood near the entrance, silent, observing, his expression unreadable. He had fought in the filth of Germania, in the cold mud where men died screaming, and now Rome summoned him back to celebrated his rival's victory in Dacia with soft hands and silk cushions.
Lucius's armor had been exchanged for a crimson-trimmed toga, his sword left at the entrance—a symbolic gesture. He felt naked without it.
A voice broke his thoughts.
"Ah, Legatus Valens! You honor us with your presence!" Senator Quintus Livius Varro approached, smiling like a merchant who had just closed a profitable deal. He was draped in a tunic so rich in purple it might as well have been drenched in the Empire’s coffers.
Lucius did not bow. He simply nodded. "Senator."
Varro gestured grandly toward the hall. "Look around, my friend. Germania still trembling! Dacian gold flowing! Rome victorious once more! Enjoy yourself, you’ve earned it."
Lucius’ gaze swept the crowd of noblemen, merchants, and generals, drinking and laughing, their voices thick with wine. They did not know war. They did not know the feeling of cold steel slipping between ribs, or the weight of a dying man leaning against you as his breath rattled out.
And then he saw them. Women and men, dressed in sheer fabrics that left little to the imagination, standing by the walls like decorations. Some poured wine, others knelt by the feet of senators, whispering empty words of flattery. A few were already being led away into the villa’s private chambers.
Lucius felt his jaw tighten. He had taken slaves in war before. It was Roman law, the way of things. But this? This was something else. This was decadence.
Varro followed his gaze and chuckled. "Ah, you disapprove?" He plucked a grape from a bowl and popped it into his mouth. "Come now, Valens. This is Rome! Victory must be tasted in full."
Lucius did not look at him. "Tell me, Varro... did you fight in Germania? Dacia? Britannia?"
The senator laughed, waving a hand. "Gods, no! My duty is here, guiding Rome’s future."
Lucius exhaled through his nose. "Then tell me, Senator... how does victory taste from a marble hall?"
Varro’s smile faltered for only a second. But then he clapped Lucius on the back, grinning. "Ah, you always were a serious one. No wonder your men worship you."
Lucius did not return the gesture. Instead, he turned, leaving the senator to bask in his own indulgence. He had no desire for soft hands and whispered lies. He needed air.
As he stepped onto the balcony, the cool night breeze cutting through the heat of the celebration, he closed his eyes. The scent of wine and excess faded, replaced by something else—the memory of damp earth, of blood, of men who had died believing their cause was just.
This was the Rome he fought for. And this was the Rome he despised.
