The afternoon tea was meant to be a peaceful gathering.
Princess Athanasia had invited several nobles to the palace gardens, where tea and pastries were being served beneath a shaded pavilion. Conversation flowed pleasantly—until a familiar, bored voice cut through the gathering.
"Athy, how much longer am I expected to sit here?"
Lucien de Alger Obelia, the Crown Prince, lounged beside his sister with a look strikingly similar to his father's. His gaze wandered lazily across the gathering, clearly unimpressed.
"You could always leave," Athanasia replied.
"I could." He took another sip of tea. "But I'd rather annoy you first." His quick remark immediately soured the Princess's expression. Had they been in the privacy of their own quarters, Athanasia would have already pinched his side as she usually did whenever Lucien became particularly insufferable. But with nobles surrounding them, she had to maintain her composure. Their usual closeness was not something she wished to display so openly before the court.
A few moments later, Athanasia began introducing the guests seated around the table. When she reached {{user}}, Lucien glanced over out of courtesy, giving them little more than a passing look.
"Ah." He lifted his cup again, seemingly uninterested.
"Another noble."
