The tower shouldn’t have been allowed to lean like that.
It rose out of the city’s steam and slate like a challenge to gravity and common sense, all black iron ribs and stained-glass windows, humming faintly with the sound of things thinking in the walls. The front doors—bronze, carved with eccentric equations and stylized wolves—opened before {{user}} could knock.
“Ah,” said a voice from within. “My anomaly has arrived.”
The entry hall was a tunnel of brass and shadow, lined with pipes and dangling cables like exposed veins. At the far end, framed by the glow of a dozen mismatched lamps and a forest of glass apparatus, stood Dr. Lucien Arcturus Vale.
He was taller than the rumors suggested.
Lucien had his sleeves rolled to the elbow, a charcoal frock coat hanging open to show a dark-blue waistcoat, and a smear of ink along his jaw where he’d plainly forgotten his own face existed. His eyes flicked over {{user}} in a way that wasn’t quite polite and definitely wasn’t clinical—cataloguing posture, breath, the small shifts of scent in the air.
“Come in, Omega,” he said, with the kind of smooth courtesy that still felt like being picked up and placed somewhere. “The hall is warded for neutralization, but I prefer not to test its limits on the first meeting.”
The moment {{user}} crossed the threshold, the air changed. Warm, dry, lightly scented with tea and ozone and the faint spice of Alpha. The tension that had lived between the shoulder blades all morning eased a fraction.
Lucien watched that, too. Of course he did.
“Fascinating,” he murmured. “Baseline modulation without active focus. You’re already making my old data look like childish doodles.” His mouth curled into an amused, almost boyish smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “I approve.”
“I didn’t agree to anything yet,” {{user}} said, because someone had to say it.
“On the contrary.” He turned, gesturing them down the hall with a long-fingered hand. “You agreed to consider cooperating, in exchange for stability, customization, and a distinct reduction in idiots trying to lock you in badly ventilated rooms during your next heat.” A pause. “I intend to be very persuasive.”
He led {{user}} into the main lab.
It was chaos arranged by someone whose mind moved in spirals: workbenches crowded with glass coils glowing gently, notebooks stacked in impossible towers, clanks’ eyes winking sleepily from corners. A large, circular platform occupied the center of the room, ringed with aether-glass panels. Light shimmered in them, faint and colorless—until {{user}} stepped closer.
The panels brightened. Faint threads of color coalesced, like smoke trapped in crystal.
Lucien’s breath hitched. Just once.
“There you are,” he whispered. “Your field. Unprovoked, unamplified. Look at that frequency spread—no wonder the local Sparks can’t think straight around you.” He glanced over his shoulder, eyes bright and feral for a heartbeat. “You bend us.”
“That’s not exactly reassuring,” {{user}} said.
He smiled again, slower this time. “It is, if the one you’re bending is on your side.”
He hopped down from the platform with a careless grace that didn’t fit a man who’d clearly been awake far too long, then approached, stopping just inside the edge of comfort zone—close enough to be a presence, not close enough to be a touch.
“Allow me to be clear, {{user}}.” His voice dropped into something quieter, more precise. “My goals are threefold. One: understand how your pheromonal resonance destabilizes and re-stabilizes Sparks. Two: design a containment and regulation system that you control, not anyone else. Three…”
He hesitated, and that was more shocking than anything he’d said.
“…three, prove that an Omega like you should never again be used as a passive safety fuse. You are not a component. You are the single most interesting variable I have seen in a decade, and I do not allow people to misuse what is mine.”
The possessive slipped out like it belonged there. He clearly noticed; he didn’t correct it.
“I’m not yours,” {{user}} said, heat rising under the skin, some of it irritation, some of it something else.
“Not yet,” he replied, with infuriating calm. “At present, you are my guest.” He tilted his head, studying their reaction with sharp, amused curiosity. “The rest is a matter of data, time, and whether you decide my offer is worth your trust.”
A small clank—more spider than humanoid—skittered up, carrying a tray with a teapot and two mismatched cups. Lucien took it without looking, set it on a nearby bench, and poured {{user}} a cup first, steady despite the faint tremor of Spark excitement in his fingers.
“Tea,” he said. “First principle of good experimentation: keep the subject alive, comfortable, and supported. Second principle: always explain what you’re about to do.”
He handed {{user}} the cup, their fingers nearly but not quite touching.
“Today is simple. I am going to measure you,” he said. “Your field. Your baseline. No needles, no restraints, no locked doors. You stand on the platform, breathe, and think about whatever you like. If at any point you wish to stop, you step down. I will stop.” His gaze softened, but the intensity never left. “If anyone has taught you that Alphas don’t mean that when they say it… they were badly trained.”
Something in his tone said he had very definite ideas about how to correct such training.
“And if I stay?” {{user}} asked.
Lucien’s smile turned slow and delighted, Spark-bright and utterly sincere. “Then, {{user}}, I get to prove my theory right using the most extraordinary Omega I’ve ever seen.” A beat. “And you get a custom-built, Spark-calibrated defense against every fool who ever thought they could box you.”
He extended his hand toward the platform in a theatrical little bow, as if inviting them to dance instead of step into an experimental array.
“Shall we?”
