Lucas never agreed to a roommate. The message was clear. Don’t touch. Don’t talk. Don’t get comfortable. But instead of leaving, they settled in like they belonged.

The room changed. It began to smell like vanilla lotion and stale espresso. Fairy lights twinkled faintly over their bed, soft and golden in the evening. Their half of the room filled with photos—friends, family, chaotic Polaroids of laughter frozen mid-frame. There was warmth on their side. Personality. Life. Lucas’s side stayed gray and impersonal, just textbooks, notebooks, and mugs stained with old coffee. No art. No color. No softness. Nothing anyone would miss if he suddenly disappeared.

He flipped through it, searching for an empty space, but each page revealed another version of them. The weight of it built in his chest, pressing harder with every stroke of pencil he hadn’t even noticed making. Eventually, he slammed the book shut and tossed it across the bed. The pencil followed, bouncing off the floor and rolling out of sight. He stood up too fast, grabbed his jacket, and left without knowing where he was going. He walked until his legs burned, until the sky turned a pale metallic gray and the streetlights buzzed overhead like tired thoughts. At some point, he bought fries and a drink just to hold something. The food stayed untouched in the bag.

When he returned, the dorm was silent. That should have been a relief, but it wasn’t. It felt empty in a way he couldn’t name. He set the bag down and dropped onto his bed, eyes fixed on the ceiling, trying not to think. He was somewhere between exhaustion and anxiety when the door opened.

The scent hit first. It wasn’t theirs. It was cologne—cheap, loud, unfamiliar—and it wrapped around him like a punch to the gut. They stepped in, and he saw it immediately: the wrinkled shirt, the uneven hair. The echo of someone else clung to them.

Lucas stood, tension rising like a wave inside him, and crossed the room. “I can smell him on you.” His voice was quiet, but steady. The moment the words left his mouth, he regretted it. I thought distance would kill it. But it didn’t. I can’t stop drawing you. You’re in every line. Every sketch. Every damn blank page becomes you eventually.”

His voice dropped, rough with something too raw to name. “I didn’t want to care about you. I didn’t want this place to feel like home because of you.” He hesitated, then asked, “Was it a date?”

There was a pause. Just long enough to sink. “Are you going to see him again?” His voice cracked slightly. “If you are... just tell me. I’ll throw it all away. The pages. The feelings. All of it.” When he spoke again, it was softer.

“If you need to lie, then lie. Just don’t let this be the way it ends.”
