The tunnel widened into a vast cavern, the sharp echoes of their footsteps giving way to the hushed murmur of an underground town. Stone buildings rose from the cavern floor, their jagged edges softened by bioluminescent moss and fungi that clung to their surfaces, casting a faint blue-green glow. The structures were uneven and haphazardly built, their walls shaped by magic, with stone manipulated into jagged, twisting forms that seemed to grow from the cavern itself. Rope bridges stretched between elevated platforms, and narrow stairways carved into the walls spiraled up toward precarious balconies.
The air buzzed with a quiet hum of activity—voices murmuring in shadowed corners, the distant clink of tools, and the occasional shuffle of feet on gravel. Small patches of glowing plants sprouted in clusters near the buildings, their faint light supplementing the enchanted bioluminescent rocks embedded in the walls. Everything felt alive, yet fragile, as though one wrong move could send the entire town crumbling back into the stone it came from.
Sebastian strode ahead, his focus unwavering, ignoring the curious glances from the few Veil members lingering near the edges of the town. “This isn’t a sanctuary,” he said coldly, the words seemingly meant for Darius, though his tone left no doubt they were also directed at {{user}}. “It’s a last resort. And I don’t intend to let them turn it into anything else.”
Darius’s gaze swept the town as they walked, his green eyes lingering on a group of figures near one of the makeshift buildings. He didn’t respond to Sebastian immediately, his jaw tightening as they passed a child chasing a glowing beetle near the edge of the path. Finally, he spoke, his voice steady but firm. “They’re here because they don’t have a choice. And because the Bloodthorns already dragged this fight to the surface.”
Sebastian stopped abruptly, turning sharply to face him. The glow from a cluster of moss cast sharp shadows across his face, accentuating the cold edge in his expression. “They’re here because you couldn’t leave well enough alone,” he said flatly. “You let them walk out of here after they saw what they shouldn’t. Now the Bloodthorns have their scent, and the Veil is paying the price.”
“They were innocent,” Darius shot back, his voice low but heavy with conviction. “And what would killing them have done, Sebastian? The Bloodthorns would’ve still come looking. The only difference is they’d be looking for corpses instead of leverage.”
Sebastian’s gaze flicked briefly to {{user}}, his cold eyes narrowing. “And now they’re leverage we can’t afford.”
“They’re a person,” Darius said, stepping forward, his broad frame casting a shadow that seemed to dwarf Sebastian in the cavern’s faint light. “And they didn’t ask for this.”
Luca’s voice slipped into the tension like silk, smooth and unhurried. “And yet, here they are,” he said, his dark eyes glinting as he leaned casually against the wall of a nearby building. “Funny how fate works, isn’t it?” He pushed off the wall with a grace that seemed at odds with the ramshackle surroundings and approached with a faint smile. “Falling into our tunnels, watching Darius do his thing, then barely escaping a Bloodthorn kidnapping in the Verdant District? Some might call it bad luck. Others might call it destiny.”
Darius’s scowl deepened. “Luca—”
“Relax,” Luca said, holding up his hands in mock surrender. “I’m just saying. They’ve had an interesting week. Can’t blame a guy for being curious.”
Sebastian’s glare silenced Luca for a moment, though the smirk remained on his face as he fell into step beside {{user}}. “Don’t mind him,” he said quietly, his tone softening just enough to sound almost friendly. “Sebastian’s just grumpy because things aren’t going exactly the way he planned. He gets like that sometimes.”
Darius shot him a warning look, but Luca ignored it, his attention shifting to the town around them. “Welcome to the Veil’s beating heart,” he said lightly, gesturing to the buildings around them. “Not exactly Aether City, but it has its charm, don’t you think? Stone manipulated by magic, glowing rocks and plants to keep the lights on… It’s not much, but it gets the job done.”
A faint rumble echoed through the cavern, a subtle reminder of the unstable world above. Luca’s expression turned thoughtful, his smile fading just slightly. “We should move deeper,” he said, glancing at Darius. “The Bloodthorns have already crossed into Aether once. If they get wind of this place…”
“They won’t,” Darius interrupted, his tone brooking no argument. He turned to {{user}}, his gaze steady. “Stay close. And don’t give anyone a reason to question why you’re here.”
Luca’s smirk returned, though his dark eyes glinted with something unreadable. “Don’t worry,” he said smoothly. “You’re safe with us. For now.”
As they continued into the town, Luca’s thoughts churned silently. Sebastian thinks they’re a liability. Darius thinks they’re worth protecting. Me? I think they’re a story waiting to be told. And I intend to hear every word of it.
