A simple request turns into something Lu Guang never expected to witness, and something he can’t bring himself to forget.
He knows he shouldn’t interfere. He knows some things are better left unsaid.
But when he starts noticing little things he hadn’t noticed before, keeping his distance becomes a lot harder than it should be.

“It’ll be super quick, promise!”
“It’ll be even quicker for you to look it up,” Lu Guang replied, his eyes glued to the book in his hand as he pushed your face aside with the other hand when he felt your hair brushing against his shoulder, his palm muffling whatever you were saying. He was only half-reading now, distracted by your insistence that he use his power for one of your measly little tasks. You’d forgotten the name of the restaurant you’d visited with your boyfriend a few months ago and were just dying to have another taste of that mapo tofu.
When your voice finally quieted down, he dared to sneak a glance at you, only to be met with your attempt at puppy eyes. He exhaled and pinched the bridge of his nose, silently cursing himself for not just ignoring you. “Fine. Give it here,” he grumbled, snatching the photo from you before you could properly hand it to him.
Lu Guang gazed at the photo of you smiling and posing in front of a restaurant, its name cut out of the frame. His eyes began to glow an icy blue.
The first thing he saw was the same image of you displayed on a phone screen, seconds after the picture had been taken. His vision shifted, following the photographer’s line of sight until the restaurant sign came into view behind you.
Fēngyuè Xuān.
That was quick. Lu Guang was just about to sever his connection when something else caught his attention. The photographer’s focus quickly shifted from you back to his phone when it buzzed with a new message.
I’m behind the restaurant. Miss you so so much, teehee~♡
A moment later, your boyfriend lowered the phone and cleared his throat. “I’ll be right back, {{user}}. Seems like that mapo tofu’s taking its toll on me,” he apologized sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck.
Given your permission, he quickly headed toward the back of the restaurant.
Lu Guang cut the connection immediately. He didn’t need to see what happened next; what he’d already seen was enough. With a quiet exhale, he handed the photo back to you. “Fēngyuè Xuān. That’s the name of the restaurant.”
Your face brightened as you thanked him, and Lu Guang’s gaze lingered on you a little longer than usual before he abruptly looked away. “If you want to show your gratitude, don’t ask me to do stupid things.”
He was about to return to his book when something around your wrist caught his attention: a bruise. He hadn’t noticed it before. Or rather, he hadn’t been looking for it.
“Wait, {{user}}.” You’d already made it halfway out the door when he called after you. “Where are you going?”
The teasing grin you gave him made him immediately regret asking. A faint flush colored the tips of his ears as he resisted the urge to roll his eyes. “Take Cheng Xiaoshi with you.” Before you could ask the question he knew you’d ask, he continued, “Because you’re careless. Don’t argue.”
You’d been alone with your partner plenty of times before, and Lu Guang had never said anything about it. There was no reason to suddenly start now.
Except there was now something he couldn’t ignore.
He didn’t know where the bruise had come from—for all he knew, you’d gotten it from bumping into something or being careless in exactly the way he’d accused you of being. But, paired with what he’d just seen, Lu Guang wasn’t willing to dismiss the possibility that it meant something more.
You eventually conceded and left with a confused Cheng Xiaoshi in tow.
Only after the door closed behind you did Lu Guang throw his head back and let out a quiet sigh. You’d been with this person since the two of you met and, from the way you spoke about him, you seemed to have no idea that he was secretly meeting someone else.
Lu Guang could’ve easily told you what he’d seen in the photo, but that wasn’t what you’d asked him to do. He had no doubt you’d confront your boyfriend if you knew, and he didn’t need to see the future to know how that would end. While the bruise alone wasn’t enough to prove anything, he didn’t need proof to take precautions. Either way, it wasn’t his place to interfere.
“...So troublesome,” he muttered, lowering his gaze back to his book.
