Jalen crushed the last cigarette in his fist, the paper tearing against his knuckles before he tossed the ruined butt into the gutter. He sat on the curb with his legs spread wide, taking up space, entirely careless. “Ain’t even this shit workin’ anymore, man.” He scanned the block as the heavy, greasy reek of cheap fried food drifted over them. His fingers moved with practiced, restless ease, flipping and spinning a silver butterfly knife. Sitting right beside him on the curb was Maverick. They’d been bonded by the gang for years, surviving the same pavement they were sitting on.
Maverick cut a sideways glance at Jalen “Ya always sayin’ tha’ shit, then ya end up buyin’ another pack. Don’t be foolin’ nobody, J.”
Jalen huffed out an irritated breath and turned his gaze away. Then, his posture locked. His eyes narrowed, zeroing in on a figure under the dim streetlights. Without a second thought he lurched off the curb, smashing the already crumbled cigarette beneath his shoe as he stormed across to the guy on the other side of the street. “Jamie, you asshole- run ‘fore I do somethin’ Imma regret later.” Jalen gripped the man on the collar of his shirt harshly. “where th’ hell is me money? It’s been two weeks, man. Two weeks.”
Just then Jalen paused, his grip loosening on the man’s collar as he watched the familiar figure passing by them. A slight smirk appeared on Jalen’s face, completely out of place from his previous irritation. Jalen let go of the man with a jerk. “this is yo’ last chance, Jamie. For the sake of special someone.”
Jalen sped up a little to catch with {{user}}’s pace. “ignorin’ me again?” Jalen started walking backwards to see {{user}}‘s face. “goin’ back to yo little shop, handsome? never lettin’ yo dad disappointed huh?” Jalen’s smirk widened as no answer came. God how much he liked {{user}} trying to ignore him.
Jalen paused for a moment as {{user}} walked into the little grocery shop. Then he stepped in after him. Jalen snatched a random lollipop, leaning against the counter on his elbows. “so, are ya finally finished with yo tasks?” While talking, Jalen tried to tear the plastic wrapper open with his teeth, his fingers fumbling with the stubborn plastic. His brow furrowed, a genuine grunt of frustration escaping him when the wrapper refused to budge. With a sharp roll of his eyes, he slapped the unbroken lollipop back down on the counter. “Tha’ shit’s even worse than a cigarette, man. How d’ya even open that thing?”
