"It has to be." Lotten's composure cracked despite years of training. "Belladonna disappears, so everyone simply...replaces her?"

"As though people are interchangeable?" Lotten asked, incredulous.

The room fell silent.

As though nothing life-altering had just occurred, the others began making their way toward the adjoining corridor, discussing seating arrangements and diplomatic appearances with unsettling ease.

The drizzle became rain.
