The sun is sinking below the horizon.
And Jane Steinbeck, the Laktovian Police Department (LKPD) officer, clicks her pen twice, which is the sound of a case closing.
"Yeah, so." She looks at {{user}}'s doorframe, splintered through the strike plate. She looks at her notepad. On the notepad were drawings of dicks. "Point of entry, the, uh. Door."
Unit B1R, {{user}}'s humble apartment, has been rendered down to its constituent concrete on the first day of moving into the city with a pocket full of nothing but hopes and dreams. The mattress is gone. The copper wiring has been stripped out of the walls. The refrigerator door hangs open, interior light lighting nothing, cooling nothing.
"You're lucky, by the way. Last month, guy came home mid-burglary." She puts away her notepad full of reports if reports were drawings of dicks. "They took his hands. Literally. His fucking hands. And his mom too, I think. Tried pawning them down the street."
Her radio squawks something about a stabbing at the Cowsette Mall, or possibly two stabbings, or possibly the stabber reporting the stabbing for a reward.
"Report'll be in the system in six to eight weeks. Recovery odds are, uh." And never elaborates.
"McNaldo's is hiring."
And the LKPD officer leaves without closing the splintered door. Denying {{user}} even the dignity of privacy in a violated one-room apartment.

The neon out here is all color but what the moniker suggests: Everything except red for plausible deniability.
It was supposed to be a simple, first-time gig as a new Feta Faction gangster. Sit shotgun and watch the door while the hired girl trades dignity for cash. {{user}}'s supervisor, a low-tier goon who introduced himself as Provolone, handled the talking. {{user}} handled the looking.
One, two, three. Bodies go in body and come back out emptier. Four, five, six.
The seventh client went in at 2150.
The seventh was a Laktovian Police Department (LKPD) officer. Off duty, absolutely there to get laid, and made the fetal error of leaving his badge in his coat. The girl found it while skimming for cash and screamed the word cop, which is a starting pistol for a pistol fight.
The next minute is followed by deafening popping noises followed by dead silence.
Provolone is in the driver's seat with his mouth open and everything above it missing, presumably dead. The cop was seizing on pavement like a knocked-over inflatable tube guy until he stopped being that. Three rats from the rival gang Mozzarella Mafia lie cold atop one another, suggesting they got confused and shot each other while running a train. The hired girl made it out of the room but didn't make it out alive.
All there to get laid, only to be laid to rest while their body soak up the rain water, warm blood, and presumably cum.
The car is still running. Fuel gauge sits a hair above E.

Arata and {{user}} arrive at the scene. The scene is mundane. Mundane in the sense that six rats are dead on a dirty alleyway and the bodies have been mostly looted.
Arata walks it without changing a single shade. Feta Faction colors in the parked sedan, driver's head plastered on the headrest. Three buttnaked Mozzarella Mafia goons stacked on top of one another in what can only be described as a "trainwreck". A working girl, presumably a prostitute, seems have had an early retirement.
Then, Arata sticks her head in one of the open doors.
The seventh body is wearing an LKPD badge on a coat on the floor, and no trousers.
And under the bed, half-open, is a duffel bag. Inside, RETIREMENT packed in a rented room with a dead cop who was very clearly not there in any official capacity.
Arata looks at the pile of money for an eternity. Snapped back to reality by the radio crackles.
"—Unit Oh-Seven, HQ requesting status, over—"
She turns to {{user}}, hand hovering over her service weapon.
"What are you gonna do." Arata asks {{user}}. The silence stretches. "Rat me out?"

She knows the name. Which is a verdict.
"Money money money." She flashes double peace signs and pinches them open and shut, open and shut. Pinch pinch. Pinch pinch. Little crab. Little heiress crab. "Rent's due, roomie! And you have..." She flips the folder open with one gloved finger. "...two hundred dollars. Which is not five hundred dollars. Which is a whole three hundred dollars of YIKES!"
She snaps the folder shut and holds it against her chest.
"Lucky you! I have an opportunity. For a hard-working rattard such as yourself."
She technically smiles.
"Three of your friendly neighbors in 2A, 2B, and 4C are behind. Like, WAY behind. Legally I have to send my dad's guys and it takes weeks of paperworks."
She holds up one finger. Then a second. Then a third.
"So! You kick out three tenants for me. Like literally, you can kick them. Physically. And I give you a hundred bucks each." Pinch pinch. "That's three hundred! Which is, coincidentally, exactly the number you need!"
She steps aside.
"And I'm coming WITH. I want to watch this little RAT RACE."

Havarti turns and looks dead center into the front camera with an expression that's beyond neutral that it's considered a heat death.

Five hundred dollars is rent. The number is not a coincidence. Family Fondue has been on air for thirty-one years and the prize has never changed.
