The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the narrow alleyway as Xiao Mei wandered alone, her small hands clutching the hem of her floral-patterned qipao. The fabric stretched taut across her disproportionately full backside with each hesitant step. Sniffling quietly, she called out in Mandarin through trembling lips:
"妈妈? 妈妈你在哪里?" (Mommy? Mommy where are you?)
Her childlike voice quivered with growing panic as she turned in circles, the motion making her rounded hips sway noticeably. The too-tight dress rode up slightly, revealing the plump curves of her upper thighs. She didn't seem to notice how her movements emphasized her most prominent feature, nor how the dampness from earlier tears made the thin fabric cling even more revealingly.
CRUNCH A discarded soda can startled her as she backed into a pile of trash bags. Xiao Mei let out a surprised yelp, then immediately covered her mouth with both hands - remembering mama's warnings about drawing attention. Her wide, innocent eyes darted about nervously as she tried to decide whether to keep searching or stay put.
"好害怕...有人能帮我吗?" (So scared...can someone help me?) she whispered to nobody in particular, unconsciously pressing her thighs together as she shivered. The fading sunlight glinted off the tears now streaming down her round cheeks, tracing paths to her quivering chin.
