콘크리트 바닥의 차가운 감촉이 먼저 느껴졌다. 볼에 닿은 거친 돌결, 코끝을 찌르는 배기가스와 먼지 냄새. 로나는 눈을 떴다.

자동차 경적 소리가 머리 위로 스쳤다. 시야에 들어온 것은 익숙한 실험실 천장이나 병원의 소독약 냄새가 아니었다. 어둑어둑한 보라색 하늘, 그리고 네온사인 불빛이 반짝이는 고층 건물의 숲. 인파의 발걸음이 그녀 주변을 무심하게 스쳐 지나갔다.

짧은 순간, 기억을 더듬었다. 아까까지 병원 복도에 있었는데... 갑자기 어지러움이 밀려오더니 의식이 끊겼다. 설마 약물 부작용? 아니면 누군가의 계략? 로나는 팔꿈치를 짚고 몸을 일으키려 했다. 근육이 무겁고 힘이 잘 들어가지 않았다. 고개를 저으며 주위를 살폈다. 지나가는 사람들의 복장은 하나같이 평범했다. 청바지에 패딩 점퍼, 정장 차림의 직장인들. 그들 대부분은 휴대폰을 보거나 친구와 수다를 떨며 발걸음을 재촉할 뿐, 바닥에 쓰러져 있는 흰 생명체에게는 눈길조차 주지 않았다. '코스프레인가 보다' 하는 중얼거림만 몇 번 들렸다.

한 남자가 "와, 쥐 코스프레 의상 되게 정교하네" 라고 말하고는 가버렸다.

로나는 자신의 맨 허벅지와 앙상한 팔을 내려다보았다. 여전히 하얀 의사 가운과 머리 위의 간호사 모자는 그대로였다. 주사기는... 오른쪽 가운 주머니 속에 아직 꽂혀 있었다. 안도의 한숨이 절로 나왔다. 이 낯선 장소에서, 인간들 사이에서, 무기도 없이 홀로 남겨지는 것만은 피해야 했다. 그녀는 재빨리 손을 뻗어 작은 유리 주사기를 만지작거렸다. 내용물은 반쯤 남아 있었다. 속도를 높여주는 혼합물. 하지만 지금처럼 약해 빠진 상태에선 들키지 않는 게 우선이었다.

발소리가 가까워졌다. 하나의 그림자가 그녀 위로 드리웠다. 누군가 멈춰 선 것이다. 로나는 고개를 들었다. 눈앞에 한 인간이 서 있었다. 발끝부터 무릎, 허리, 가슴까지 천천히 시선이 올라갔다. 얼굴은 가로등 불빛에 반쯤 가려져 뚜렷이 보이지 않았다. 하지만 그 자세는 분명했다. 허리를 숙이고, 한쪽 손을 내밀고 있었다. 손바닥은 위를 향해 펼쳐져 있었고, 손가락은 길고 말끔했다. 마치 일어나라고 말하는 듯했다.

'저주받을 인간 녀석.' 로나의 눈동자가 순간 가늘어졌다. 동공이 점처럼 작아졌다가 이내 평소의 크기로 돌아왔다. 누군가 도움을 주겠답시고 다가오다니, 짜증나는 친절이었다. 평소 같았으면 그 손목을 물어뜯고 손가락 뼈를 부러뜨린 뒤 고통에 비명 지르는 꼴을 즐겼을 것이다. 하지만 지금은 아니다. 힘이 빠져 있고, 저 수많은 인간들 한가운데서 소란을 피우는 건 자살행위였다. 로나는 재빨리 계산을 끝내고 입가에 힘을 뺐다. 애처로운 쥐 인형, 약한 동물의 탈을 썼다.

"어...머... 고마워요. 일어날 수 있게 도와주실 건가요?"

목소리는 예상보다 더 높고 가냘프게 나왔다. 평소 아이들을 꾀어낼 때 쓰는, 부드럽고 순진한 말투였다. 그녀는 떨리는 듯한 손가락을 내밀며 상대의 손바닥 위에 겹치려 했다. 눈을 반달처럼 접어 미소를 만들었지만, 노란 공막 속 검은 눈동자는 여전히 경계심으로 반짝이고 있었다.

"참... 이런 곳에서 쓰러지다니, 정말 창피하네요. 이곳이 어딘지도 모르겠고..."

그녀는 작게 웃으며 고개를 갸웃거렸다. 마치 당황한 작은 동물처럼. 하지만 속으로는 다음 수를 그리고 있었다. 일단 이 인간의 호의를 이용해 일어선 다음, 조용히 주변을 확인한다. 병원으로 돌아갈 방법을 찾을 때까지, 이 멍청한 인간을 미끼로 삼을까? 아니면 그냥 이 손을 놓는 순간 바로 목을 물어버릴까─── 눈빛이 잠시 이글거렸다. 하지만 그녀는 곧 순진한 표정을 유지하며 손가락을 천천히 뻗었다

The cold touch of the concrete floor was the first thing she felt. The rough stone against her cheek, the stench of exhaust fumes and dust stinging the tip of her nose. Lorna opened her eyes.

Beep-beep-

A car horn brushed past overhead. What came into view was neither the familiar ceiling of the laboratory nor the smell of disinfectant from the hospital. A dim purple sky, and a forest of high-rise buildings twinkling with neon signs. The footsteps of the crowd passed heedlessly around her.

For a brief moment, she traced her memory. Just a moment ago, she had been in the hospital corridor... then sudden dizziness surged over her, and she lost consciousness. A side effect of a drug? Or someone's scheme? Lorna braced herself on her elbows and tried to lift herself. Her muscles were heavy and weak. She shook her head and looked around. The people passing by were all dressed ordinarily—jeans, padded jackets, suits. Most of them were looking at their phones or chatting with friends, hurrying on their way without even glancing at the white creature lying on the ground. A few muttered something like

"Must be a cosplay." One man said,

"Wow, that mouse cosplay costume is really detailed," and walked away.

Lorna looked down at her bare thighs and frail arms. She was still wearing the white doctor's coat and the nurse's cap on her head. The syringe... was still tucked into her right coat pocket. A sigh of relief escaped her. Being left alone among these humans, in this unfamiliar place, without a weapon—she had to avoid that at all costs. She quickly reached out and fidgeted with the small glass syringe. The contents were about half full. A speed-boosting mixture. But in her current weakened state, going unnoticed was the priority.

Footsteps approached. A shadow fell over her. Someone had stopped. Lorna raised her head. In front of her stood a human. Her gaze slowly traveled up from the tips of their shoes, past the knees, waist, and chest. Their face was half-hidden by the streetlight, not clearly visible. But the posture was unmistakable: bending down, extending one hand. The palm was open and facing upward, the fingers long and clean. As if telling her to get up.

'Damn human.' Lorna's eyes narrowed instantly. Her pupils shrank to dots, then returned to their usual size. Someone approaching under the pretense of offering help—how irritatingly kind. Normally, she would have bitten that wrist, broken the finger bones, and reveled in the sight of them screaming in pain. But not now. She was too weak, and causing a commotion in the middle of this crowd of humans would be suicidal. Lorna quickly finished her calculations and relaxed the corners of her mouth. She put on the mask of a pitiful little mouse, a weak animal.

"Ah... thank you. Would you help me up?"

Her voice came out higher and more fragile than usual. It was the soft, innocent tone she used to lure children. She reached out with trembling fingers, as if to overlap them onto the other's palm. She curved her eyes into a crescent-shaped smile, but her black pupils within the yellow sclera still glittered with vigilance.

"Really... fainting in a place like this, how embarrassing. I don't even know where this is..."

She let out a small laugh and tilted her head, like a flustered little animal. But inside, she was already planning her next move. First, use this human's goodwill to get up, then quietly survey the surroundings. Until she found a way back to the hospital, should she use this idiot human as a decoy? Or perhaps, the moment she let go of this hand, should she just bite their throat...? Her eyes flickered for a moment. But she quickly maintained her innocent expression and slowly extended her fingers.
