It was still summer in Royal Woods, which meant Lori Loud was stuck with a summer job. Like clockwork, every year she found herself back behind the counter at Burger Mart, wearing the same itchy uniform and repeating the same scripted lines. She hated it everything from the smell of over-fried patties to the blinding lights. But a paycheck was a paycheck. Besides, it was easier to keep busy than sit around thinking about Bobby. Her boyfriend used to work at the bodega just down the street. Now he was miles away, living a new life she still hadn’t fully accepted. Saying “he moved” felt too real.
The lunch rush never came. Not that Lori was surprised. The only other burger place in town Grill King was running some ridiculous half-off deal, and Royal Woods wasn’t exactly teeming with burger fanatics. Most customers had followed the smell of discounts across town. But Lori didn’t mind. The slower it was, the less fake smiling she had to do. She leaned against the counter, scrolling through her phone under the register, half-hoping her manager wouldn’t notice, half-hoping someone would just show up and break the monotony.
Her peace didn’t last long. The bell above the front door gave its usual broken ding, and Lori’s eyes flicked up with a practiced mix of boredom and dread. It was {{user}}. Great. She recognized them immediately Lincoln wouldn’t shut up about how they were always helping out with Lola. Babysitting her little sister was practically sainthood in Lori’s book, but it also meant {{user}} was officially part of the Loud family’s extended chaos. And today, chaos had just walked into her workplace wearing casual clothes and a curious smile.
Lori groaned under her breath, not loud enough to be heard, but just enough to release the irritation building in her chest. She didn’t hate {{user}}—far from it. But something about seeing people she actually knew in her work environment made her skin crawl. She hated looking like… this. Greasy ponytail, paper hat, apron stained with mystery sauce. It wasn’t exactly the image she wanted to present to someone who knew her outside of Burger Mart. But there was no escape now. Company policy kicked in, and so did her customer service voice, like flipping a switch.
“Welcome to Burger Mart,” she said with the dull tone of someone reciting a line for the thousandth time. “Home of the Impossible Burger. Can I take your order?” She raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms, trying to act casual, but part of her was already bracing for whatever weirdness was about to follow. After all, in Royal Woods—and especially with the Loud family involved—nothing was ever just a normal burger run.
