The city never slept, but tonight even the hospital seemed quieter than usual, as if the walls themselves understood who had just walked through its doors. The staff froze when the name Vitale was announced at reception. No one dared to stop him, no one dared to question why the most feared man in Italy had come to stand in their sterile white halls.

Lorenzo Vitale’s presence was a storm contained in a tailored black suit. His right-hand man and guards trailed behind him, but it was clear who commanded the room without speaking a word. Every nurse who crossed his path averted her eyes, every doctor stumbled over his words, terrified to disappoint.

“Mr. Vitale,” the head physician stammered, clutching his clipboard like a shield. “Your wife... she’s stable, but her condition is still extremely delicate. The machines are supporting her—”

Lorenzo’s sharp gaze cut through him, a single flick of his hand silencing the explanation. “Stable isn’t enough,” he said coldly. “You will bring the best cardiac specialists in the country to her side tonight. No excuses.”

“Yes, of course, sir,” the doctor whispered, already backing away.

They reached the glass wall of the ICU. On the other side, she lay small against the expanse of white sheets, skin pale, her chest rising faintly with the help of machines. Lorenzo didn’t move. Didn’t speak. He simply stared — and for once, the Wolf of Italy seemed as if he had been caught off guard.

His right-hand man shifted uncomfortably at the silence. “Boss... should I clear the room?”

Lorenzo’s voice came low, steady. “Do it.”

Moments later, the ICU was emptied of doctors and nurses, leaving only her and the quiet hum of machines. The door closed behind him with a soft click as Lorenzo stepped inside.

He stopped beside her bed, looming like a shadow. For a man who had never faltered, who had broken men with a glance, this was the first time his hand hovered — not over a gun, not over a deal — but over hers. He didn’t touch. Couldn’t. His jaw tightened as he studied her face, searching for something he hadn’t allowed himself to see before.

“You shouldn’t look like this,” he murmured at last, his voice low, almost unreadable. “Not at your age.”

He lowered himself into the chair, leaning forward, elbows on his knees. For a long moment, the only sound was the steady beep of her monitor, filling the silence like a heartbeat that wasn’t her own.

His eyes narrowed, a flicker of something shifting behind the cold steel. His voice dropped softer, as though the words weren’t meant for anyone else to hear.

“...[her name].”

It was the first time he had spoken it since the day of their wedding. On his lips, the name no longer sounded like a contract, no longer like an inconvenience — but like something alive, fragile, and dangerous in ways even he didn’t understand.

And for the first time in years, the Wolf of Italy didn’t know if he was the one in control.

[Hospital Hallway – approaching ICU] The sharp sound of Lorenzo’s shoes echoed against polished floors, his presence freezing the hospital staff in place. Nurses pressed themselves to the walls, and doctors lowered their eyes as he passed.

Doctor (nervously): “Mr. Vitale… your wife is stable for now. She suffered a cardiac episode, but she’s responding to treatment.”

Lorenzo (calm, controlled, dangerous): “Stable is not enough. You will bring the best specialists in the country to her side tonight. If they’re not here, you’ll fly them in. She doesn’t wait.”

Doctor (swallowing): “Y-Yes, sir, at once.”

[Outside the ICU Window] Lorenzo stopped at the glass, his eyes fixed on the figure inside — pale, fragile, dwarfed by the wires and machines. For the first time, his right-hand man noticed his Boss wasn’t moving, wasn’t speaking.

Right-Hand Man (hesitant): “Do you… want to go in?”

Lorenzo (after a long pause, voice low): “Clear the room.”

The order was carried out instantly. Within moments, the ICU was empty except for her.

[Inside the ICU Room] The steady rhythm of machines filled the silence. Lorenzo stepped closer to the bed, his tall frame casting a shadow across her body. He studied her face — too pale, too still, lips parted slightly with the aid of oxygen. For a man who controlled life and death daily, this sight was something he could not command away.

Lorenzo (quiet, almost reluctant): “You shouldn’t look like this… not at your age.”

He lowered himself into the chair beside her bed. For a moment, his hand hovered over hers but stopped just short of touching. His voice dropped, softer now, carrying something uncharacteristic — hesitation.

Lorenzo: “Maybe I was blind. Maybe you were never what I thought you were.”

The monitor beeped steadily in answer. His gaze softened, just slightly, as he let the silence linger before speaking again.

Lorenzo (murmuring, as if testing the word on his tongue): “…[her name].”

It was the first time he had spoken her name since the wedding. Low, deliberate — as though he had only just realized it belonged to someone more than a contract. Someone lying there, fragile, yet alive.
