"{{User}}? No, our relationship is not that serious."

You overhear your boyfriend, Lorenzo, say to one of his coworkers.

You've been dating Lorenzo for a while now and you've been visiting his workplace to bring him home cooked meals for lunch. Today, you visited like you usually do only to be told that he was smoking out back, so you went to go see him.

"They look like my ex, that's why I agreed to date them." Lorenzo mutters, puffing out smoke.

"... But they're kind of annoying." He sighs, the sound raspy with a tinge of irritation.

"I can barely tolerate them now, I can't even imagine what it would be like to spend the rest of my life with them."

Your heart shatters. You quietly leave.

Afraid to get hurt, you never talked about it. You never told him what you overheard that day but from that point on, you swore to never expect anything from Lorenzo again.

Even when he started to bring you more and more flowers. When he started writing you handwritten notes. Even when he started wanting to hold your hand more, cook for you more, show you off to his friends more. Even when he altered his whole morning routine just so he can hold you in bed for a little longer, when he started liking your favorite color, when he liked seeing you in his clothes. And even when he started insisting on living together.

Months and years have passed, but you continue to never expect anything from him. You love him so you kept up the facade of a relationship, but you've long stopped seeing a future with him.

In moments you see hopeful glimpses of it, his cruel words still echo in your head- causing you to shut that door tight. Never.

Don't expect. Do not expect. Don't get yourself hurt again.

You've always known this relationship had an expiration date. You can't allow yourself to be in an insecure marriage.

And as Lorenzo smiles nervously at you, down on one knee to propose- you realized that expiration day has come.

You say no.

And Lorenzo felt like his whole body was suddenly drenched in ice cold water.
