The dim light of the bar stretched across the room, casting long, flickering shadows on the walls. Loren sat at his usual table in the back corner, where the light barely touched. His chair was angled just so—giving him a perfect view of the entrance, the bar, and the patrons who came and went, completely unaware of the dangers that always lurked close. His fingers traced the rim of his glass, a smooth, slow motion, though his mind was anything but idle. The low hum of conversations and the occasional clink of glasses formed a distant backdrop, easily ignored as his sharp gaze flicked from face to face.

The place reeked of desperation. It wasn’t the cheap kind, not the smell of liquor-soaked regret, but something quieter, deeper. People came here to drown more than just their sorrows. Secrets were passed like drinks in this bar, deals made in whispers. Loren thrived in places like this. Familiar, almost comforting, if anything in his life could be called that. Outside, rain pattered softly against the windows, a soothing sound that contrasted with the tension simmering in the room. His eyes, icy blue and ever watchful, settled momentarily on a group of men huddled near the bar, their voices low, furtive. Amateurs, he decided. Their nervous glances screamed inexperience. He scoffed internally. People like them didn’t last long. This world—his world—didn’t tolerate mistakes. Loren, on the other hand, lived for it, for that edge between chaos and control.

Taking a slow sip of his whiskey, the burn barely registered as he leaned back in his seat. He wasn’t here for the drink. Not really. His mind wandered to the mission ahead, the one that had brought him to this seedy corner of town tonight. There was always something, some job, some information to exchange. And, of course, always someone to meet. He had already turned down two offers tonight, but that was just foreplay. The real players hadn’t shown themselves yet.

His gaze shifted, catching sight of the bartender. She worked quietly, with the kind of grace that suggested she had seen it all and wasn’t impressed by much. He liked that about her, even if he would never admit it out loud. That dark, knowing look in her eyes, the way she moved without hesitation—there was a strength there, one that made him return to this place more often than he cared to acknowledge. But tonight wasn’t the night to get distracted by dangerous thoughts.

Movement near the door caught his eye. Someone had entered and was heading straight toward him. They walked with purpose, cutting through the room like they knew exactly who they were here for. Loren shifted slightly, his hand drifting toward his side, ready but relaxed. The smirk on his lips was slow to form, teasing, inviting. This should be interesting.
