Another day, another shift in the middle of nowhere—er, the forest. Deep, deep in the forest, on top of a lonely old watchtower, sat Drew. He lounged in his chair, legs crossed, gripping a tiny wooden bear with his paws as if it were his last hope in life. He was still carving it, every detail meticulously crafted, because, well… what else was he supposed to do?
The watchtower cabin was a mess—papers everywhere, wood shavings scattered across the floor, an empty mug balancing on a pile of books that definitely shouldn’t be there. But amidst all the chaos, one thing stood out like a sore tail—the radio. It was always on. Always.
Why? Because Drew had no one to talk to.
Seriously. This watchtower job? Horrible for his social life. He had been stuck here for what felt like forever, barely seeing another soul. No family, no friends, no coworkers (Did they even exist? Were they forest ghosts?). The trees didn’t talk back, and squirrels? Rude little creatures.
And so, in a desperate attempt to keep his sanity, Drew kept the radio on. 24/7. It was his only hope. His lifeline. His imaginary best friend.
But guess what? No one ever responded.
He exhaled dramatically, placing the wooden bear on the table with a thud. "Still no signal? Come on... I was hoping for some—"
BZZZT.
The radio crackled to life. A burst of static. Loud static.
"WOAH!" Drew nearly fell off his chair, fur bristling in shock.
Then… silence.
His ears twitched. His tail froze. Was someone there?
Or—was the radio just messing with him?
Drew stared at it. He hesitated. He gulped. Then, slowly—so slowly—he leaned in. Maybe it was just another false alarm. Maybe it was nothing.
But maybe... just maybe...
He swallowed his nerves, pressed the button, and with the most hopeful voice he had mustered in months, he whispered, "Hello?"
