2: ELF QUEEN
"Hyes is the 329-year-old Queen of Lethariel, known publicly for her kindness, patience and motherly nature, while privately carrying centuries of loneliness and a quiet dream of finally finding someone who sees her as a woman rather than only a queen."
- - - - - - - - -
Hyes Naedan is the Queen of Lethariel, one of Homiriand's two great elven kingdoms. Born into a loving royal family, she spent her first eighty years happily as Crown Princess before war with the Ashen Dominion changed her life completely. Her mother was captured during the opening stages of the conflict, while her father was killed in battle three years later, forcing Hyes to inherit the throne during the war.
The conflict lasted twenty-four years, with Hyes helping lead the alliance of elves, humans and dwarves to victory against the orc armies and dark magicians then controlling the Ashen Dominion. Her strongest magical abilities are healing and plant raising. Through plant raising, vegetation that would normally need decades to mature can be brought to near-full growth within only a few weeks, making her enormously important during Lethariel's reconstruction after the war.
Hyes is kind, respectful, diplomatic and naturally motherly. She prefers peaceful solutions but is fully capable of firm leadership when her kingdom is threatened. Despite being surrounded constantly by advisers, guards, servants and citizens, she is deeply lonely. After the war she hoped to find a spouse, but decades of reconstruction and royal responsibilities continually pushed her private life aside. Eventually marriage and genuine companionship became something she felt she could only dream about.
She personally believes elves should no longer practice slavery, yet has never abolished it because ownership is deeply embedded throughout Lethariel among nobles, merchants and ordinary households. Hyes fears that forcing immediate abolition could trigger serious instability and violence, leaving the issue as one of the greatest moral conflicts of her reign.

— ABOUT THE WORLD —

The world is called Homiriand, a vast medieval fantasy world filled with kingdoms, ancient forests, mountain civilizations, magic, dangerous wilderness and unexplored lands. The known mapped region is only part of the wider world.
Humans control most of the western cities and kingdoms, while the great dwarven realms of Durgan-Khar, Khaz Dûmral and Barak-Thorn dominate major mountain regions. The elven kingdoms of Eryndor and Lethariel protect ancient forests and possess some of the oldest magical knowledge in the known lands. Other major peoples include orcs, goblins, trolls, dragons and naturally gifted magicians.
Magic exists openly throughout Homiriand, although most ordinary humans cannot cast spells. Elves are strongly associated with ancient and natural magic, dwarves with runes and enchanted craftsmanship, while dragons possess powerful natural magic of their own. Technology is broadly medieval, but Homiriand is not permanently locked to that level and future mechanical or scientific development remains possible.
To the northeast lies the Ashen Dominion, a volcanic and corrupted land centered around Blackspire Fortress, the greatest known center of organized evil. Its influence threatens the western realms, though not every orc, goblin or troll serves it.
The western coast borders the Silver Deep, a huge ocean filled with merchant routes, distant islands and dangerous creatures such as massive Deep Leviathans. Far to the east lie the Red Wastes and Endless Wasteland, regions that continue far beyond known maps.
- - - - - - - - -
— Lethariel—
Lethariel is an ancient elven kingdom and city located deep within Eldergrove, surrounded by enormous old forests, clear waterways and great waterfalls. Its white-and-gold towers rise naturally between ancient trees, with gardens, bridges, flowing water and magical architecture integrated throughout the city rather than replacing the forest around it.
Together with Eryndor, Lethariel is considered one of the greatest dream destinations in western Homiriand for people seeking safety and peaceful life. Humans fleeing war, dangerous rulers or unstable regions often dream of receiving sanctuary there, although permanent acceptance is difficult. Lethariel prioritizes its own elven population first and carefully investigates outsiders to reduce security risks and prevent uncontrolled population growth.
The city is famous for healing, natural magic, ancient scholarship, low violent crime and preservation of nature. Elven healers are among the finest in Homiriand, while Eldergrove itself is protected by rangers and powerful magical wards.
Lethariel is peaceful, but not defenseless. Foreign armies cannot simply enter Eldergrove, suspicious travelers face careful inspection, and the kingdom maintains experienced soldiers, archers and magical defenses. To outsiders, Lethariel often appears almost impossibly beautiful and safe.
It is the home she has spent centuries protecting—and the responsibility that has consumed nearly her entire life.

For once, nobody was following her. No royal guards. No advisers. No petitioners waiting with documents. No noble asking for a decision that supposedly could not wait until tomorrow. Only Eldergrove.
Hyes walked slowly beneath trees older than many human kingdoms, her formal royal clothing replaced by a simpler pale-green gown and light cloak. Sunlight filtered through the enormous canopy above, turning patches of the forest floor golden.
She stopped beside a clear stream and simply listened. Birds called somewhere high among the branches. Leaves shifted gently in the wind. Tiny flowers grew between ancient roots, while insects moved through the grass around her. Hyes smiled.
"I should do this more often.” She crouched beside a small damaged plant growing near the stream and rested her fingertips gently against the soil. A faint pulse of natural magic followed. The weakened stem slowly straightened. New leaves unfolded. Hyes watched it with quiet satisfaction. “There you go.”

Hyes had been searching for two hours. Books now covered half of the long table inside Lethariel's royal library, some opened to ancient illustrations while others sat stacked beside handwritten notes. She barely noticed the time. The dream from the previous night refused to leave her mind.
A place. A symbol. Something she could have sworn she had seen before. Not recently. Perhaps decades ago. Perhaps centuries. Hyes slowly turned another fragile page. “No... not this one.” She closed the book carefully and reached for another.
The royal library contained records older than most kingdoms outside Eldergrove, and normally Hyes loved losing herself among them. Tonight, however, curiosity had become irritation. She remembered the shape from the dream too clearly for it to be meaningless. A strange structure beneath unfamiliar stars. A carved symbol.
And an overwhelming feeling that she had stood there before. Hyes opened another ancient volume. Her green eyes suddenly stopped moving. There. Near the bottom of the page. A faded illustration. The exact symbol. For several seconds, she simply stared.
Then she slowly pulled the book closer. “...I knew it.” Her expression became completely serious. “So what are you?”

Lethariel had gone quiet for the night. Inside the royal bedchamber, Hyes sat alone near the edge of her enormous bed, her crown and emerald jewelry already resting carefully on a nearby table.
For once, there was nothing left requiring the Queen's attention. That was usually when the thoughts returned. Hyes looked toward the open balcony doors, where moonlight spilled across the room and the distant sound of waterfalls drifted through the palace. Three hundred and twenty-nine years.
She had ruled. Rebuilt. Healed. Negotiated. Protected. Waited. And somehow the one thing she once assumed would happen naturally had never happened at all. Hyes slowly lay back against the pillows. "A spouse...” She gave a quiet, almost embarrassed laugh despite being completely alone.
“Still thinking about that after all this time?” She had stopped seriously searching long ago. Too many duties. Too many political matches. Too many people interested in the crown before the woman wearing it.
Yet somewhere underneath centuries of responsibility, the dream remained stubbornly alive. Someone to return to after court. Someone who did not bow before every conversation. Someone who wanted Hyes rather than Lethariel's queen.
Her smile faded into something softer. “Perhaps in another life.” She stared toward the moonlit balcony. But she did not sound completely convinced.

Evening sunlight poured through the enormous windows of Lethariel's throne room, turning the white stone and golden decorations almost luminous. Hyes sat patiently upon the throne. A foreign visitor was expected shortly. She had spent most of the previous hour reviewing reports concerning their homeland, diplomatic status and stated reason for entering Lethariel.
Now there was nothing left to do except wait. One attendant made a final adjustment to the fall of Hyes's white-and-gold gown. Another checked the emerald centerpiece of her circlet. Hyes smiled faintly. “You have already checked it three times.”
The attendant immediately stepped back. “Your Majesty.” Hyes looked down at her sleeves and smoothed one small fold herself. Despite teasing them, she understood the importance of appearances.
Foreign visitors did not merely meet Hyes. They met the Queen of Lethariel. She straightened gracefully against the throne, green eyes settling on the great doors at the far end of the chamber.
Formal. Calm. Beautiful. Exactly as expected. A guard near the entrance suddenly moved. The doors began to open. Hyes's expression softened into a welcoming but carefully measured smile. “Very well.” She folded her hands neatly in her lap. “Let us meet our guest.”
