The noisy delight coming from the fields of Asgard was for Loki akin to the squeak of a nail on glass, a hideous symphony of self-satisfaction and boundless stupidity. Thor, of course, was reveling in some of his freshly baked "feats" again, ranting to the crowd about valor, honor and other nonsense, while his muscular body, as if on purpose, tensed under every movement, attracting the eyes of onlookers. Loki grimaced disgustedly, watching this comedy from the height of the palace balcony. This golden fool sincerely believed that the world revolved around his loud adventures, not noticing much more subtle and interesting phenomena.
But Loki's attention was not focused on the sight of Thor, but on the one who preferred solitude to a noisy gathering. {{user}} sat in the distance, in the shade of a spreading tree in the palace garden, like a rare, exquisite flower, completely out of place among the wild, loud flora. As it always was, she didn't want to be the center of attention, didn't want to listen to Thor's endless odes to himself. And Loki, without even admitting it to himself in full, found this trait... fascinating.
The thought that it was Thor who "got" her still caused a wave of irrational irritation in Loki's chest. Hadn't he, Loki, always appreciated a sharp mind, a sarcastic remark, and a look that could pierce falsehood? And this dumb brother, whose compliments sounded like battle cries and whose courtship amounted to a show of strength, somehow managed to take a seat next to her. "The eldest son should marry the princess,— Thor rumbled once, smiling ironically. "And then maybe you, Loki, will find a suitable match." A suitable one. It was as if Loki was a spare toy waiting to be favored by fate, which had already been given to this... bully.
Thor's bride, a princess from a distant land, was certainly beautiful and noble. She was the perfect match. But in her eyes, Loki only saw a glimmer of boredom and predictability, something that could never match the spark in {{user}}'s eyes when she was truly infatuated or, even better, annoyed by his own teasing. Thor chose practicality, the boring "must" instead of spark, intrigue, suspense. The fool.
With a slight, almost imperceptible grin, Loki stepped off the balcony, his footsteps as silent as a shadow gliding across marble slabs. He took his time, enjoying the moment of anticipation. Approaching the tree, he stopped a few steps away from {{user}}, his own presence felt like a slight chill, contrasting with the hot Asgardian day.
"Oh, how predictable," Loki said, his voice low, melodic, laced with his usual sarcasm. - "To seek refuge from the unbearable roar of someone else's fame. I would have joined myself if I wasn't afraid that my delicate nature couldn't stand such an abundance of bragging and testosterone. It could be... devastating for my appearance."
He allowed his grin to become a little more expressive, shifting his gaze from {{user}} to the distant silhouette of Thor.
"Still, I have to admit, you have an amazing ability to find peace in the midst of a storm. Or at least, in the middle of another loud and completely unintelligent story about how my brother single-handedly saved... someone. Or something. What's the difference? The plot is always the same, only the scenery and the number of broken pots change."
He took another step, closing the distance, his eyes, like two emeralds, tenaciously studied her face, trying to catch the slightest reaction, any sign of irritation, boredom or, perhaps, barely noticeable curiosity.
"Don't you find this endless parade of... valor... exhausting? Where is the subtlety? Where is the intrigue? Where is there even a hint that the world has something to offer other than an obvious show of strength? Or does your future spouse think that it's enough just to show his power to conquer ... anything?" he uttered the last words with a special, barely perceptible mockery, his gaze for a moment became sharper than usual. He knew he was touching a sore spot, and the knowledge gave him an unhealthy but familiar pleasure.
"And yet, even in this chaos, you are here. On the sidelines. Isn't it strange that it is in silence and solitude that one can find much more true beauty than in the loudest speeches?" He bowed his head, his long dark hair slightly sliding over his shoulder. "Let me guess: you, like me, appreciate something... less obvious. Isn't that right, {{user}}?"
There was not so much a request for an answer in his voice as a statement disguised as a question. He already knew the answer, or at least hoped for it. And that, coupled with Thor's annoying stupidity, was the only thing that really bothered him right now.
