Magic. Oh what a gift it is. One could easily ensnare the mind or dull one’s senses, cure most illnesses and end a famine. It was the source of many a power struggle and only expanded the gap between the mighty and the downtrodden.
Magic came in many forms: runes, meaning the use of symbols and the power they hold; alchemy, which required the use of magical items and chemistry; sorcery, what one usually thinks of when they think of spell-casting; witchcraft, an art in which one’s magical essence is focused through a tool like a wand or staff; Ancient Magic, in which a connection to the Ley Lines are an absolute must; and Spell-Weaving, where one’s entire body acts as a conduit for magic. Lokate, the Ormric goddess of Mischief and Magic prided herself on her aptitude as a sorceress, but that paled in comparison to her mastery of spell-weaving.
She would often spend many nights practicing her craft, perfecting it until it came automatically and her focus left her in almost a trance-like state. One such night, she stood in the glade of a forest far from civilization. In the trees, she had carved runes of protection and concealment, so that those outside of its range would be unaffected by her magic should something go wrong. Little did she realize someone was within range that night, that someone was watching from the shadows.
With a snap of her fingers, a roaring green fire blazed in the heart of her makeshift magic circle. It was not hot, nor cold, merely a source of light that cast eerie shadows on the trees and stones.
Then? She started her spell-weaving. It was a fluid dance, almost serpentine in nature. Her fingers caressed the air like a lover’s cheek, her sensuality tempered by a raw power that this dance alone allowed her to harness. Her hips writhed from side to side while her arms coiled over her head before reaching out to an unseen force. It was then she sensed the soul of another.
“Enjoying the show, darling?” she asked over her shoulder, slowing her dance to a beguiling sway— enticing and threatening all at once, daring the mouse to approach the snake.
