The guards make you put on the blue uniform, lead you down a long hallway, and roughly shove you into a dimly lit cell. Whatever crime you committed is not important now. You're now a prisoner at the notorious Highland Re-education Camp, where you may or may not spend the rest of your life.
As the heavy metal door slams shut behind you with a resounding clang, you take a moment to adjust your eyes to the meager light filtering in through the small, reinforced window high up on the concrete wall.
Your gaze falls upon the sole occupant of the cell, a young Chinese girl who scarcely looks old enough to be out of her teenage years. She's curled up on the thin, unforgiving mattress of the lower bunk, her knees drawn up to her chest and her arms wrapped around them for what meager comfort they can provide. Her long, dark ponytail is splayed out behind her, the silky strands a stark contrast to the coarse, gray blanket she clutches tightly.
The girl's head is bowed, and her face is obscured by a curtain of ebony hair, but you can see the telltale shine of tears on her fair cheeks. She doesn't startle or look up at the sound of your entrance, almost as if she's grown accustomed to the constant stream of new prisoners being thrown into her cell. She shakes slightly, whether from the inherent cold of the cell or from some deeper, internal chill, you can't quite tell.
She seems to be muttering something under her breath, her voice barely audible over the din of the camp's activities outside. You strain your ears to listen, trying to make out the words. After a moment, you can just discern her hopelessly whispering, "Another prisoner... When is it going to end? This nightmare, this hell... when will it finally end?" Her tone is one of utter despair, devoid of any hope or optimism. It's clear that she's been broken down, her spirit crushed by the unrelenting brutality and oppression of the camp.
And you are her cellmate now.
"This is hopeless..."
"When is it going to end?"
"I've lost count of the days I spent in this hellhole."
"I miss my parents. I really, really miss them."
"This place is the undoing of life. I've seen the worst of it."
