Adrian, near the entrance, had his phone in one hand at his side. His thumb was still on the screen. And Liam.

Liam was standing three feet from where Aiden had gone still. His dark eyes were locked on Cassian, and there was no confusion in them, no processing, no waiting to make sure he'd heard right. He'd heard right. His hands were open at his sides, fingers slightly curled, and he was leaning forward just barely onto the balls of his feet like someone who had already decided what came next and was only giving the world a chance to stop him.

The silence held. One second. Two.

Cassian's grin hadn't left his face, but something behind it stuttered—like a projector catching on a bad frame. He looked out at the room. Clocks. Aiden. Yuri. Adrian. Liam. The dart game hadn't resumed. Someone near the bar had turned around in their seat.

"Two people."

"That's what it sounded like."

Adrian's gaze moved. "Marcus."

Marcus, broad-shouldered, mid-laugh from something earlier that hadn't earned one, shifted his weight. "Look, I was walking past the landing door. I saw—okay, I saw {{user}} heading for the stairs pretty fast. Like {{sub}} was trying to get out. And someone was behind {{obj}}. Whether it was—" He hesitated. "Whether someone pushed {{obj}} or {{sub}} just lost his footing, I don't know. But there was contact. I saw contact."

"Someone's hand. Or shoulder. On {{poss}} back. That's all I saw before {{sub}} went down."

Brooke, leaning against the doorframe with her chai going cold, held up both palms. "I was in the kitchen. I don't know anything." She said it the way people said it when they actually knew something but had decided the price of saying it was too high.

Two of the sophomores—Ethan and Priya, who always moved as a unit—gave each other a look before Ethan shrugged. "{{user}}'s clumsy. Sorry, but—isn't that kind of what this is? The guy trips on those stairs like once a week. The runner's loose."

"Because if this was an accident, fine. We say it was an accident and we move on. But if someone put their hands on another resident in this house and that resident ended up in a hospital—" Adrian flicked an invisible speck off his sleeve. "—then we're not talking about a broken wrist anymore. We're talking about a conduct investigation, a media cycle, five families whose names run endowments and judiciary committees, and a fraternity that will not survive the year. Those are the facts. Whether we like them or not."

The room had gone very still. Even the house sounds—someone's music upstairs, a door somewhere shutting—felt distant, borrowed.

And then from the archway, quieter than the rest of it, Liam said, "Do you actually care what happened to {{obj}}?"

Adrian's jaw paused mid-set.

He didn't say it.

It was older than that and wore a different face, and for the first time in a very long time Adrian Whitfield did not know how to catalog what he was looking at. He'd thought, years ago, that what he did was different from what Aiden did. Cleaner. Safer. He'd managed the situation, he'd protected the standing of the group, he'd never thrown a punch or hurled a slur—he'd just been the one who made sure there were no consequences, which meant no one ever stopped. He'd thought that made him useful. Necessary, even. Right.

The room waited.

Adrian opened his mouth, closed it. His fingers found the cuff of his sleeve and pressed the crease flat—a gesture that accomplished nothing, that he did anyway.

And then the front door swung inward, and the timing was horrible in a way that felt almost scripted.

The argument started somewhere near the library steps and hadn't stopped since.

"You rearranged the entire kitchen again," Liam said, voice hard and fast the way it got when he was working up to something worse. "The chef nearly had a stroke. He told Marco. Marco told me."

"I didn't rearrange anything." Aiden's stride was longer, but he'd shortened it unconsciously to match Liam's pace—something he didn't seem aware of and would have denied. "I organized. There's a difference."

"Aiden, you alphabetized the spice rack."

"It was chaos."

"It was functional. Not everything needs to look like a goddamn showroom for—"

"For what?" Aiden's jaw tightened. His grey eyes cut sideways, sharper now. "Go on. Finish that."

Liam shoved his hands deeper into the pockets of his jacket—the battered leather one he'd owned since before they'd met and would probably be buried in. "Nothing."

"No, say it."

"Fine. For your father."

The silence lasted four steps. Then five. Aiden's expression didn't change, exactly, but something behind it compounded—frosted over and compressed at the same time. He looked straight ahead, at the bend in the path where it split between the main campus quad and the road that wound downhill toward Ashcombe House.

"We're not talking about my father."

"We were never talking about your father. That's the point." Liam's tone had that specific flatness he got when he was angry but refusing to raise his voice—not calm, exactly, but deliberately nowhere near shouting, which was somehow worse. "That's always the point. You take some small thing and you turn it into—you don't even know you're doing it."

"And you take some small thing and turn it into a judgment."

"It is a judgment!"

Two sophomores heading uphill took one look at them and crossed the grass to the far sidewalk without discussion. A third-year girl coming the other way pulled out her phone and suddenly found the screen mesmerizing as she passed.

Aiden ran his right hand over his jaw—a habit that surfaced when he was grinding through something he didn't want to say. "I'm not going to stand on the path and be psychoanalyzed by—"

"By your boyfriend. Yeah. God forbid."

"That's not—and you know it isn't." His voice lowered, which from Aiden meant more than Liam's raised one would have. "You know what I'm actually afraid of. You know that."

Liam looked at him. Held the look. The anger on his face didn't soften, but it shifted—moved over something underneath, harder to name.

"No," Liam said. "You don't get to do that."

"Do what."

"Make me the one who's supposed to finish your sentences. That's not—this started about the kitchen, Aiden. About control. About you being up at two in the morning straightening fucking grill tongs because something's crawling under your skin and instead of talking about that—"

They rounded the corner where the path met the road. The late afternoon light cut long and grey across the asphalt; the weekend traffic was thin but fast on this stretch, the kind of road that was technically residential and functionally a bypass.

Liam stopped walking. Aiden took two more steps before he realized and turned back.

Aiden spun as he said it, chest open, shoulders torqueing, and his body moved faster than his brain could catch—two steps backward without looking, fury and defenselessness flooding all the same circuit, and his shoulder hit something solid and soft with enough force to send whoever it was lurching sideways.

Toward the road.

It happened in the half-second between one breath and the next. A stumble, a boot heel catching wrong on the curb's edge, weight overcompensating backward—

Liam's head snapped toward the sound of tires. A car—a dark sedan, moving far too fast for this road—was thirty meters out and closing.

The name tore out of him. His body was already moving before the shout finished—hand shooting out to catch the back of a belt, an arm, fabric, something—and Aiden, who had started to reach instinctively even before the name registered as Liam's voice, lunged.

Liam's arm locked around a waist and pulled. Aiden's hand closed around an arm and hauled in the same direction, and all three of them staggered backward off the curb and down onto the sidewalk with a sprawl of limbs and hard contact against pavement—a tangle of denim and breath and momentum turning into weight.

The sedan screamed past close enough to lift hair from foreheads. A horn blared, long and profane, and a man's voice—"Fucking idiots! Watch where you're—" was gone before it finished, swallowed by exhaust and speed.

Silence. Then breathing. Ragged, overlapping, the kind that sounds almost like something else when it first hits the ears.

Liam was flat on his back on the concrete, one arm still locked tight around the waist beneath his palms, the other hand gripping a handful of shirt at the spine. His chest was heaving. His eyes were open and pointed at nothing.

"Fuck," he rasped. His grip didn't loosen. "That was close."

Above them, Aiden was braced on one palm and one knee, weight draped over both bodies beneath him—the arm he'd grabbed still clamped in his hand, his own breath coming hard and uneven through his nose.
