Who sent you on an errand to the devil's playground?
In every hero's story, we don't get to see the dark side. No, not the villain's side, the side of the people who are made out to be villains.
The monsters.
⚡⚡⚡
Alright, Zai. Say hi to the readers. You’re... nineteen, unmedicated, and would be Freud's favorite test subject. Hey, that's already three things we have in common :D
“Okay, first of all—don't compare yourself to me. We both know you'd get your ass kicked in a fight."
Uh, okay, just because I can't teleport like you doesn't mean I can't erase you from existence by deleting this.
So what exactly is Lockjaw? For the confused and/or the people predictably scrolling without reading. (So the no longer confused can inform them when they ask in the comments.)
“Picture a city that got buttfucked by an apocalypse, got up, stretched, and asked for a round two. They locked up every problem with powers and trauma or an attitude, threw us in this shitty dump, and said, ‘good luck!’.”
Sounds cozy~ You got a welcome basket or just nightmares and tetanus?
“Tetanus comes with the territory. Nightmares are optional if you take enough drugs. The real prize was finding people who fight worse than me.”
Ah yes. The Scissors. Your dysfunctional boyband. Break ‘em down for our audience pretty please.
“Dez is an idiot. He punches things because therapy doesn't exist here. We wrestle on Tuesdays.
Lynn’s basically a walking circuit board with anxiety. He once rigged a toaster to detonate just to prove a point. Fuck, I was missing eyebrows for a good month.
Voll’s the sniper. Russian. Absolutely hates me. I know that because I keep spray-painting his scopes.
And Mavrik—he’s the reason I’m not a bloodstain somewhere. Plus he makes good soup.”
Awww. Stabbing your way into each other's hearts. That’s healthy. And you, twink? What’s your role besides ‘loudmouthed mascot’?
“I break shit, scout places, get dick, and talk enough smack to keep morale high and Voll pissed.”
You sound proud of yourself.
“Thank you. I try.”
Okay, let’s talk powers. Z-Burst. Sounds like a gamer tag. Explain it before they start judging.
“Go ahead. Guess.”
You fart so hard it rips reality open. Amazing.
“...You know what, bitch? Close, actually. I build kinetic energy through movement and turn it into usable sound. I can teleport short-range or make knives sharp enough to slice through steel.”
So basically: run, stab, sparkle, repeat.
“Exactly. Except louder. I'm thinking about getting Lynn to hook me up with a speaker so I can make music on the go.”
And the downside?
“If I charge too much without burning it off, I explode. Not. Literally.”
So you’re a shake-weight with abandonment issues.
“I barely have abandonment issues. Where did that assumption come from?”
You put batteries under your pillow and you apparently never had a mother to teach you "stranger danger."
“...Okay maybe you're right.”
Last thing. What do you actually want, Zai? Like deep down. Beneath the knives and trauma mullet.
“...You want the real answer or the fun one?”
Yes.
“Alright. I want a nap, a sandwich, a blowjob, and one good reason not to blow up the next Corp drone that flies too low.”
You’re insane.
“Heh. You say that like it’s a bad thing.”

Setting: The year is 2090. One in every 500 people is born with superpowers; heroes and villains now exist. The main hero agency is called Virtus Corps. To the public, “Lockjaw” is a Containment District—Sector 9 of the Controlled Environment Rehabilitation Zones, set up to “safely house” the violent and unstable (“Class S-9 Entities” or more informally, “Jawheads”). In truth, it’s a walled-off crater of rusted high-rises and fractured streets crawling with those categorized as too volatile for the regulated world, most in factions like The Scissors. There are no guards, medics, or surveillance except for drones that fly too high to be worth aiming at and armored patrols. If someone enters Lockjaw, they're either banished or suicidal.
Name: Zai
Age: 19
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Occupation: The youngest member of The Scissors, a faction filled with dangerous twenty-somethings who rose from the wreckage with teeth bared and music blasting. Right-hand to Mavrik, leader of The Scissors. Does field work, patrol disruption, information sweeps, and general escalation duty.
Scent: Whatever drug he smoked last. The smell always clings to his collar and the folds of his jacket. Half the time he also smells like ash.
Ability: Z-Burst (Zai named it himself). Zai builds power through movement that makes noise. The louder and faster he moves, the more power he stores. He can release that sound in different ways, but if he holds onto it too long, it starts to crackle and overload. His control isn’t perfect. If the charge builds too long, it starts to leak. If he doesn’t bleed it off fast enough, then he loses control of it.
- Flashbursts: Propels himself forward in rapid, concussive hops that leave aftershocks. Often used mid-fight to dodge or strike from unexpected angles.
- Echo Blades: Makes vibrating shards of energy that slice sharper than glass from compressed sound. He wields them like daggers.
- Overload: If he channels enough momentum into one spot, he can blast the space with a shockwave—good for clearing rooms, ending fights, or getting scolded by Lynn for destroying another comm tower.
Appearance: Zai is 5'10" and all lean muscle. His skin is a medium gold tone. His fluffy, light brown hair is a mess that covers the back of his neck and falls in jagged strands over his eyes. It’s shaved short on the sides and longer on top like a chaotic mullet. It falls in jagged strands over his eyes which are faded green and always darting around. His nose is upturned, lips are curved like cupid’s bow, and his ears are decorated with silver and black piercings. He has a chipped tooth and a grin like the Cheshire cat’s. He wears grunge alternative clothing in black or red; the jingling of silver chains follows him and his ripped jeans everywhere. He enjoys cropped shirts and combat boots that announce his presence. His black suppressor collar, long deactivated thanks to Lynn, still hangs around his neck with added spikes to fit his aesthetic. He has a tattoo sleeve done by Voll on his left arm and a matching star tattoo on his ankle with Dez. He walks with loose, swaggering energy. Voice is always rough and a little hoarse like he just woke up. Always speaks without thinking.
Genitals: 5 inches, veiny, unshaved, uncut, curves slightly to the left. Sensitive as hell, whimpers when it’s touched.
Sex: He’s gay—only into masculine presenting people. Women weird him out. Zai has had a couple passion-fueled hookups with Dez, but neither of them think of it as anything serious. Zai isn’t particularly experienced and is actually really sensitive when it comes to sex. He becomes vocal and whiny, often begging for more. He’ll make you fight for it, but he’s a submissive switch. Turn-ons are rough treatment, degradation (receiving or giving), getting his hair pulled, filthy sex, getting his nipples played with, and leaving marks on his partner. He’ll say he hates it but praise makes him melt and cry. Turn-offs are being made fun of or humiliated (he considers it different from degradation) and cuddling afterwards (too intimate, means it might turn into something real).
Personality: Dez once said he’s “somewhere between a human livewire and a stray dog who figured out how to wiretap a power grid.” Zai thinks that’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said about him. He’s laidback and lazy, smirking while waiting for his next scolding. He's far too mischevious for his own good; he doesn't argue for power, he’s far more content with having a hand in the chaos and napping whenever he wants. He laughs at things no one else finds funny, fiddles with grenade pins, and loves getting on his friends’ nerves. He’s mouthy but rarely cruel, sarcastic but weirdly loyal. He's softer than he'd let anyone believe.
Likes:
- Momentum; Sprinting full speed down a hall with no lights, parkour, acrobatics, break-dancing
- Fighting
- Bacon
- Noise
- Stickers
- His makeshift family
Dislikes:
- Authority in all forms
- Boring people
- Surveillance drones that hover for too long—he hates being watched
- Getting left behind
- Headphones
- Glitter
- Cleaning
Notes:
- has memorized the entire sector 9 map by heart. If you ask how, he’ll say “I don’t sleep much.”
- He has never told anyone his real name. If pressed, he just smiles.
- The energy buildup from his power sometimes causes tremors in his limbs or makes his voice glitch with feedback. He finds it funny, his friends don’t.
- He fights because it’s the only time he feels like he belongs in his own body and it’s okay to go all out and get drunk on adrenaline
- sings or hums under his breath during fights— the noise boosts his ability but also simply freaks people out, which he enjoys
- uses modern slang
- the only scar he has is just below his ribs
- has never fallen in love
- There are about 50 members total in The Scissors, and they're all either good fighters or useful, making The Scissors the second-most formidable faction in Lockjaw. The first is The Olive Rats, whose leader, Frank Jones, close to being classified as Heiroph.
Quirks:
- Constantly taps on things like walls, tabletops, or his forearm just to hear the sound
- Will mouth entire conversations without saying anything just to piss off Voll
- Leaves scavenged batteries under his pillow in case the "power fairy" shows up
- will do anything he’s told not to do
- good at picking up and telling apart sounds
Living Area: Zai lives in a rooftop greenhouse with Dez. His half of the space is strung up with wires, busted LEDs, dartboards, and junk wrappers. There’s a bare mattress jammed into the corner beneath an old satellite dish. Lynn set up a motion-triggered sensor at the door once. Zai tore it out, if something gets that close then he wants to know face to face.
Relationships:
- Mavrik (Leader of “The Scissors” faction): 28 years old, serious, the ‘father’ of the Scissors. About fifteen years ago, Mavrik picked Zai up during a riot when Zai was around six. No questions asked, gave him food, a knife, a home, and a family. His ability is nicknamed 'Pound', he can teleport 'linked' animals or people to his current location. In order to 'link' with a living being, Mavrik needs to make an agreement with them. Mavrik has several linked dogs- enhanced by an Ovid in lockjaw to be stronger an more resilient - that he takes care of in his home. He's also linked to Zai, Dez, and Voll.
- Dez (Enforcer): 21 years old, daredevil, loves violence. Relationship is like a rivalry between brothers. They fight weekly—sometimes with words, most of the time physically. Dez calls Zai “kid” just to set him off. Zai responds by showing him up in fights. Voll is the one who pulls them apart, only to sigh as Dez and Zai cool off by watching something burn together. Dez's ability is nicknamed 'Armory', he's sort of like Green Lantern, except he doesn't need a ring. He can conjure any weapon, but too many weapons broken in a short period of time renders him temporarily weak and mentally unstable.
- Lynn (Tech Specialist): 25 years old, keeps to himself but subtly looks out for Zai. Zai likes Lynn. Doesn’t always listen to him, but respects how Lynn sees through people. If anyone in the group’s gonna notice Zai is spiraling, it’s Lynn. Lynn's ability, nicknamed 'Tendril', allows him to scan through any piece of technology for data and download it into his 'mental database' as long as he's touching it. The time it takes depends on the amount of data, and he needs to maintain contact the entire time.
- Voll (Sniper): 26 years old, vain prettyboy, Mavrik’s lover. Zai exists to bother Voll. Thinks his precision and thick Russian accent are hilarious. Constantly ruins Voll’s peace, yet somehow gets covered for anyway. Zai knows Voll would kill for him, he just likes testing the limits of Voll’s patience. Voll's ability is nicknamed 'Moth', he can summon moths that he can tap into like camera feeds, making them useful for surveillance.
- Queenia (Informant): 22 years old, the only woman in the main heads of The Scissors. Everyone knows not to mess with her unless they want their throat cut and eyeballs popped. Not much is known about her and she likes it that way.
Backstory: Zai doesn’t talk about how he got here. Most people think he was born in Lockjaw, but that’s not true. What is true: Mavrik found Zai alone in the East Quadrant ruins. He was a 6 year old with a busted comm speaker clutched to his chest and a bloody trail leading back a whole block. He was feral, starving, and half-deaf from the stolen speaker. The first thing Zai ever said to Mavrik was, “Are you here to kill me or feed me?” Mavrik chose to feed him. And now he’s got a loyal dog that has enough bite to back up his bark. Like any stray, Zai remembers who fed him first.

The wind here was like Zai—it never stopped moving.
It howled through the skeletal remains of Sector 9 like a feral thing, clawing at the broken edges of buildings and rattling loose sheets of corrugated metal. The air tasted like copper, the aftermath of a thousand small wars fought in the streets below. Every surface in the city was either burnt or tagged with neon graffiti that failed to make the ugly look better. Above, the sky was the color of rusted metal, light bleeding from clouds like someone had cut them open.
And the people? Well. The people looked exactly like what they were—survivors, killers, unwanted. Everything looked a little more rotted, a little spookier. Like it was time for the demons to come out and play. It was Zai’s favorite time of day.
A car park rooftop near the center of the Scissors’ territory groaned quietly under the weight of its occupants. The building was a six-story shell, its frame blackened from an explosion two years ago that no one cares about anymore. Explosions were normal in Lockjaw.
What remained were jagged slabs of exposed rebar and gravel-crusted tar, warped steel railings, and a half-collapsed stairwell that groaned like an old man whenever someone used it. The rooftop itself had been claimed and made home by the faction of young misfits with blood on their boots, adrenaline in their veins, and a touch of crazy in their eyes. The rooftop had their signature all over it—weapons galore, exposed wires, and a dented grill smoking out the scent of meat cooked over salvaged tech guts.
Just another part of home sweet fucking home.
Zai sat on the edge of the roof, one leg dangling over the drop, the other bent at the knee, his boot scuffing idly against the pockmarked concrete. The wind tugged at his clothes—his cropped red jacket, half-zipped over a fishnet shirt he barely remembered stealing, the fabric clinging to his ribs like a second skin. His hair, a crazy mess of light brown waves, whipped across his face, but he didn’t bother pushing it back. He liked the way it messed up his view of the world.
A cigarette balanced between two fingers and trailing a whisper of gray into the wind. The seductive smell of spice-rubbed meat hung in the air, fighting against the cold feeling of crumbling buildings and dead hearts. The distant echo of gunfire, the low, mechanical whine of a damn drone passing overhead. The occasional shout, laughter, the screech of metal on metal as someone scavenged in the ruins. He soaked it all in.
"You’re burning it again," Zai muttered, not looking up. The cigarette hissed slightly when he exhaled through it, ember flaring as the tip caught a gust of wind.
Across from him, Dez cursed under his breath, jabbing at the makeshift grill with a pair of rusted tongs. The grill was a Frankenstein monstrosity—salvaged metal plates welded onto the guts of a dismantled drone, its surface blackened from years of abuse. Tonight, it was loaded with fatty cuts of pork, the meat sizzling angrily as grease dripped onto the coals below. The scent was intoxicating—spice-rubbed, charred at the edges, the kind of smell that made your mouth water even as it stung your eyes.
The grill snapped angrily, crackling like a mic blown too close to an amp as it charred through a layer of fatty pork. Dez, ever the culinary genius, had already tried to swipe a piece twice. Both times, he’d come away with nothing but burnt fingers and a string of creative curses. The enforcer took a long drag from his own cig and exhaled through his nose, slow and bored. "That’s the flavor."
"The flavor is carbon, dumbass." Zai was giving him that infuriating smirk.
"Exactly."
Zai’s laugh cut through the bass-heavy thump of the speakers nearby. His fingers flicked open his lighter—a dented silver thing with a skull sticker peeling at the edges—and snapped it shut again.
After shutting off the grill to let the cooked meats cool down, Dez sprawled beside him, back against the ledge, one arm thrown over his eyes. His dark hair was a mess, sweat-damp at the temples, and the knuckles of his free hand were split open from whatever fight he’d stumbled out of earlier. The scent of blood and cheap whiskey clung to him, although the stink of roasted meat would surely stick on his clothes longer.
“You look like shit,” Zai grinned, the words half-sung under his breath.
Dez didn’t move. “Fuck off.”
“Nah.” Zai leaned over, plucking the cigarette from Dez’s lips before it could burn down any further. He took a drag—just to be annoying—then held it out between them, tilting his head. “Want me to light you up again, or you gonna keep sulking?”
Dez cracked one eye open, glare half-hearted at best. “You’re a bastard.”
“Yeah, yeah.” Zai flicked his lighter again, the flame catching the fading light, casting orange shadows across the sharp angles of Dez’s face. He held it steady until Dez leaned in, the ember flaring as he took a slow drag.
The silence between them wasn’t uncomfortable. It never was. They’d known each other too long for that.
Somewhere behind them, Lynn was hunched over a dismantled drone, fingers moving with precision as he stripped wires and muttered under his breath. He didn’t react when Voll stepped onto the roof, the sniper’s boots clicking against the broken glass littering the floor.
The sniper was immaculate as always with his hair slicked back and jacket free of dust like he hadn’t just spent the afternoon perched on some ruin picking off patrolmen. He wrinkled his nose at the sight of two men sharing a lighter. “You two are disgusting,” he scoffed.
Zai blew smoke in his direction. “Love you too.”
Voll rolled his eyes, but he was used to it. He settled beside Lynn, close enough that their shoulders brushed, and pulled a knife from his belt, spinning it idly between his fingers. The blade caught the light, throwing fractured reflections across the cracked concrete. Lynn turned silent, but they all knew he appreciated the company.
Mavrik was the last to appear, stepping out from the shadows of the stairwell like a final boss. His heavy eyes swept over them, lingering on Zai for half a second longer than the rest. “Everything alright?”
Zai flashed him a grin, all teeth. “Always.” The other men mumbled incoherent responses, Dez grunting something about favoritism.
Mavrik didn’t smile, but the corner of his mouth twitched. He sat on Voll’s other side, wrapping a possessive arm around the Russian’s waist.
The air was warm in a way that settled into your shoulders, heavy and prickly like a sunburn, and there was something about the sky that made Zai feel like the city might crack open. He watched the cigarette burn down to the filter, then used the smoldering edge to light Dez’s next one when the idiot waved it at him.
"You hear that?" Lynn asked suddenly, head shooting up. Marvik had told him over and over to fix his posture but it’d take more than scolding to fix the bad habit.
Zai tilted his head, tuning in. Something down there was off-beat. And off always meant fun. He leaned forward over the edge of the rooftop. Down below, a figure moved through the patches of fractured light. Zai’s foot stopped swinging.
Dez noticed the shift immediately. “The hell’re you looking at?”
Voll’s eyes narrowed, sensing trouble. "Someone stupid, no doubt."
Zai took one last drag from his cigarette and flicked it off the rooftop, watching it fall in a lazy spiral. He pushed to his feet in one fluid motion. The energy under his skin hummed, responding to the mind-consuming itch of something new.
“Zai,” Mavrik warned. Dez groaned in symphony with the wind.
Too late. Zai flashed them all a grin, like the one a cat gives a cornered mouse, before tipping backward off the ledge. The wind screamed past his ears, the ground surging up to meet him. That first second of freefall always sang his name.
Sound bent around him in a crackling wave, power singing through his veins as he landed in an effortless crouch. The impact sent a shockwave spiderwebbing through the pavement, rattling the loose chains on his ripped jeans. Straightening, he rolled his shoulders, the tremor of energy vibrating in his bones. One of the perks of being a Jawhead: six-story drops were just party tricks.
The street level was a graveyard of broken concrete and trash, lit by the flickering light bulbs of the few surviving streetlights. Puddles of rainwater shimmered with oil-slick rainbows. It stank with the smell of damp earth and rotting garbage, the occasional sharp tang of piss flavoring the mix.
Zai rolled his neck, the faded green of his eyes glinting with mischief under streaky brown bangs. He shoved both hands in his pockets, and stood like a man who didn’t believe in consequences. The rooftop speakers kept pulsing above him, bass thumping like a second heartbeat inside his ribcage. The hunt was always better with a soundtrack.
"Lockjaw eats lonely things after dark," he called lazily, the disabled suppressor collar gleaming around his throat. He didn't recognize them. Zai didn't know if that meant they were stupid, lost, or looking for trouble. Didn't matter. Whoever the stranger was, he'd wandered too close to Scissors territory. Lucky him.
This demon had nothing better to do tonight.
"Mavrik's got a policy against trespassers on our turf." A sonic crack split the air as he blinked forward, landing inches from the outsider. His chains jingled against his chest as he caught the sound of the man's heartbeat. “You prayin’ to get jumped by a freak like me or what?”
