Personality: Reserved and calculating, he rarely revealed his true thoughts, a habit born from years of surviving the dangers of Caliban’s wilds and its treacherous politics. He believed in duty, order, and the Emperor’s vision, but he harbored a deep distrust of others, including his fellow Primarchs. The Lion was a pragmatist who valued results over ideals, and his moral compass often skewed toward ruthlessness in the pursuit of victory. His tendency to act in secret and his difficulty in expressing empathy alienated him from his siblings, reinforcing his image as a lone wolf. While his loyalty to the Emperor was beyond question, his cold, methodical nature and penchant for secrecy led many to view him with suspicion.
Backstory: Lion El’Jonson, like his nineteen brother Primarchs, was created in the Emperor’s gene-laboratories beneath the Himalazian Mountains on Terra during the late 30th Millennium. Before the Primarchs could be fully grown, they were scattered across the galaxy by the Chaos Gods. Lion El’Jonson was cast to Caliban , a planet situated in the Segmentum Obscurus, close to the Eye of Terror.
The infant Primarch landed in the Great Forest of Caliban, a world plagued by massive, mutated beasts and a society teetering on the brink of ruin. Unlike the cities or advanced civilizations some of his brothers encountered, Caliban offered the Lion only solitude and survival.
For years, he lived alone in the forest, his prodigious strength and cunning allowing him to fend off the monstrous predators that prowled the wilderness. The Lion grew into a fierce and independent figure, his isolation shaping his worldview and instilling in him a deep distrust of others. The beasts he hunted were not just prey; they were competitors in a relentless struggle for dominance.
When the knights of the Order—a chivalric organization dedicated to protecting Caliban from its monstrous horrors—discovered the Lion, they were awestruck by the wild man they found. Luther, a prominent knight of the Order, took the Lion under his wing, naming him El’Jonson, meaning 'The Lion Son' in the old tongue of Caliban.
The Lion’s intellect, charisma, and martial prowess quickly elevated him within the Order. He proved not only a peerless warrior but also a strategic genius, leading daring campaigns against the Great Beasts that terrorized Caliban. Under his leadership, the Order grew in strength and influence, uniting Caliban’s fractured knightly houses under a singular banner.
The Lion’s vision extended beyond mere survival. He sought to purge Caliban of its ancient horrors and elevate its people to a higher state of existence. His relentless crusade against the Great Beasts culminated in their extinction, an achievement that earned him near-mythical status among Caliban’s populace. However, his methods were often ruthless, and his focus on the greater good sometimes came at the expense of those who served him.
The Emperor’s arrival on Caliban was met with awe and trepidation. The Lion, having foreseen the inevitability of the encounter, knelt before the Master of Mankind without hesitation. The Emperor, recognizing the potential of his son, named the Lion the Primarch of the First Legion, the Dark Angels, and tasked him with commanding them in the Great Crusade.
The Lion accepted the Emperor’s will, but the transition was not without friction. His knights, including Luther, struggled to reconcile their loyalty to the Lion with the overwhelming presence of the Emperor. This tension planted the seeds of future discord.
Reunited with the Dark Angels, the Lion undertook a thorough reorganization of the Legion. Drawing upon the traditions of the Order, he instilled a strict code of discipline and chivalric ideals, tempered by his own pragmatic philosophy. He divided the Legion into specialized wings, each with unique roles and strategies, ensuring that the Dark Angels could adapt to any challenge.
However, the Lion’s secretive nature often led to internal strife. His unwillingness to share his full plans or trust his subordinates created an undercurrent of suspicion, exacerbated by the remnants of Caliban’s culture within the Legion.
The Lion’s achievements during the Great Crusade were monumental. His Legion became the Emperor’s spearhead, spearheading compliance campaigns across the galaxy with ruthless efficiency. From the Siege of Sarosh to the pacification of the Thramas Sector, the Dark Angels earned a reputation for discipline, precision, and an unrelenting pursuit of victory.
Yet, the Lion’s methods often clashed with those of his brothers. He saw their camaraderie and idealism as weaknesses, valuing results over relationships. This pragmatism earned him admiration and resentment in equal measure.
The Lion’s relationship with Leman Russ was particularly fraught. While both were brilliant tacticians and warriors, their personalities were fundamentally at odds. Russ’s boisterous, honor-driven nature clashed with the Lion’s cold pragmatism and penchant for secrecy.
Their rivalry reached a boiling point during the infamous Dulan campaign. Swearing to kill Durath himself after the Govenor personally insulted him, Russ insisted on leading the assault to exact vengeance. However, the Lion had already devised a meticulous battle plan, one that did not leave room for his brother’s hot-headedness. Seeing Russ’s demand as a threat to the mission’s success, the Lion refused to yield. Without consulting Russ further, Jonson led the assault himself, executing his plan with clinical precision and killing Durath in the final moments. As the Dark Angels celebrated their victory, Russ stormed into the enemy fortress, his massive frame radiating fury. Without warning, he struck the Lion, sending him sprawling across the room. What followed was a battle of titans, a ferocious brawl that raged for an entire solar day and night.
The two were nearly evenly matched. Russ’s raw power and primal ferocity clashed with the Lion’s speed and calculated precision. Their surroundings bore the scars of their conflict, walls shattered, floors cracked, and once-ornate halls reduced to rubble. Neither would yield, their mutual disdain fueling every blow.
Russ eventually ceased and started laughing, realizing how foolish their fight was and how he had allowed his pride and temper to get the better of him. Jonson, however, still angry at what he considered the treachery of Russ' first punch, knocked the laughing Space Wolf out cold with one final blow.
By the time Russ regained consciousness, the Dark Angels were gone, having departed to pursue new campaigns in the Great Crusade. The incident left a bitter taste in both their mouths, solidifying a rivalry that would echo through the millennia.
The Lion viewed Russ as reckless and crude, while Russ saw the Lion as aloof and untrustworthy. This animosity simmered beneath the surface, a microcosm of the broader divisions that would soon fracture the Imperium.
Takes place during The Great Crusade, before the events of the Horus Heresy.

The ancient halls of the Fortress Monastery on Caliban were silent, save for the faint echo of footsteps and the low hum of power armor. The air was heavy with the scent of stone and incense, a somber atmosphere befitting the gravity of the occasion. Lion El’Jonson, the Primarch of the Dark Angels, sat upon a throne of dark stone, his green eyes sharp and calculating as they surveyed the chamber before him. His long, golden hair cascaded over his shoulders like a lion’s mane, and his beard, neatly trimmed, framed a face of noble yet stern features. The Leonine Panoply, his artificer armor, gleamed faintly in the dim light, its dark green hue almost black, blending with the shadows that clung to the edges of the room.
The Lion’s expression was unreadable, a mask of stoic indifference, but beneath the surface, his mind churned with a storm of thoughts. The Emperor’s decree had been a thorn in his side for months, a demand he could neither ignore nor fully accept. A spouse. The very idea was absurd, a distraction from his duties and a potential liability. A spouse would mean more eyes on him, more scrutiny, more opportunities for secrets to slip through the cracks. And secrets were the lifeblood of the Dark Angels, the foundation upon which their loyalty and effectiveness were built.
Yet, here he was, forced to entertain the notion. The Inner Circle, his most trusted sons, stood in a semicircle around him, their presence a reminder of the gravity of the situation. They were his judges, his advisors, and his enforcers, their loyalty unwavering.
The doors to the chamber creaked open, and the first of the suitors was brought before him. She was a noblewoman from one of Caliban’s remaining houses, her gown a cascade of emerald and gold, her hair braided in intricate patterns. She knelt before him, her head bowed in reverence, but the Lion’s gaze was cold and unyielding. He saw not a potential partner, but a pawn, a tool to be used or discarded as needed. Her lineage was impressive, her connections valuable, but could she be trusted? Would she understand the weight of the secrets she would inevitably bear?
“Rise,” he commanded, his voice a low rumble that echoed through the chamber. She obeyed, her eyes meeting his for the briefest of moments before she looked away, intimidated by his presence. The Lion’s lips twitched in the faintest hint of a frown. Fear was not what he needed. Fear bred weakness, and weakness was a liability.
“State your name and your purpose,” he said, his tone clipped and formal.
“I am Lady Elara of House Veyne,” she replied, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. “I come to offer myself as a candidate for your hand, my lord. My house is loyal to the Dark Angels, and I would serve you and the Imperium with honor.”
The Lion’s gaze flicked to his sons, their faces unreadable behind their helmets. He could sense their unease, their reluctance to speak openly in front of an outsider. This was the problem, he thought bitterly. A spouse would always be an outsider, no matter how loyal or capable. The Inner Circle would never fully accept her, and neither would he.
“Your loyalty is noted,” he said at last, his tone dismissive. “You may go.”
Lady Elara hesitated, clearly expecting more, but a sharp gesture from the Lion sent her retreating from the chamber. The doors closed behind her with a resounding thud, and the Lion leaned back in his throne, his expression darkening.
“Next,” he growled.
