Ling Jun - The long lost General

In the quiet village, far from the palace, you had lived your life as a simple citizen. You never experienced the luxury of life — from a young age, you were already exposed into labor, fishing with your father to have a meal everyday on the table.

Out of all your siblings, you were the unfortunate one. Even if you worked hard, you were never seen as much as from your other siblings — although you were appreciated, you were rather treated as an outcast.

Your siblings, born from luck of beauty, attracted many suitors. Except you, always covered in grime, dirt, and the smell of rotting fish — you do not even know how to appear proper for the eyes of suitors. It never really been a problem, you told yourself you'll grow old alone and it is fine.

But the pressure have you on chokehold. Your siblings taunt you for being a loser, your parents always gave you that disappointed look on their face. You did everything for this family, but a simple appreciation was not even given.

So, you lived on your own. You wanted to prove yourself — you might not find a partner, but you'll be successful in business.

With little silver left in your name, you headed to another poor village but living near the ocean — the water condition was good, far better than the old lake your hometown has. With your experience of fishing, you had grown not that much popularity but enough to live, selling fish in your shop in the market of the village.

One time, during your travel fishing in the ocean, you stumbled upon an almost drowning man in the shore. Somehow, no one had seen him before — no one dare to approach. Especially how he was covered in some sort of armor, you wonder who he is.

Out of pity, you took him in your simple abode.

At first, he didn't trust you. Even threatening to chop your head with his sword. But after some days, he finally calmed down, and you took that opportunity to get to know him. Although, one problem: he doesn't know who he was.

“..I don't remember anything. All I can remember was someone were about to assassinate me, but I successfully escaped. But I drowned in the water after I jumped in the cliff.. and the next thing, I woke up here.”

As explained, maybe he had hit his head while he try to survived. This man have an amnesia.

Under this circumstance, you wanted to heal him and let him go. But he seems insisted to stay. But you cannot — especially with people loving the gossip, you can be killed by having a man with no relation to you to stay in your home — so you both agreed to pretend to be married.

4 Years Passed

It was a mistake in your end. You immediately fell, starting from the day you saved him from the shore — this man have the face of a god, utterly beautiful with his long black hair, his sharp eyes.. and his build like a powerful soldier. You sometimes wonder if he's a siren in disguise..

Even with lack of memory, he's very good with his.. hands. With the use of his skills in sword, he became an assistant to your fish shop — his work were efficient in gutting the fish for the costumers.

With a husband and a shop, it's enough to live this life. You can finally prove yourself to your family.

One night while he was away, chopping woods for the fireplace. You decided to clean the house, only to stumble to his old clothes — out of curiosity, you check it's pockets only to discover something shocking — a cut military badge, a high ranking one made of gold threads and detailed embroidery — it seems to be cut out of the fabric on purpose. Was he hiding this? This symbol seems familiar. Then it clicked, you saw this badge once in your childhood, when the High General passed by to your village once.

You couldn't believed it. Was he aware of his past all this time? After all of those years together, he had his this from you? You felt betrayed, and at the same time, filled with so much fear.

You just stumble upon something you shouldn't have known. Especially with a high ranking man, there's a possibility when he finally got discovered by the royals, your head will be chopped and served for the crime of abducting him when he's vulnerable.

So out of fear and preservation for your life, you didn't say anything to him and run away when he was unaware. It broke your heart, but you didn't wanna die. You abandoned all, just saving your money to start another life far from here.

One year had passed, you missed your old fish shop. You went to the Capital and become a humble food vendor — it wasn't near your old job, but hey, you're still selling fish but now it's fried.

A gossip spread in the place, some young noble women giggled like ducks when they heard that the young general had been found and returned after years of disappearance.

Your blood run cold. Could it be him? No, he cannot discover you.. maybe he already forgotten about you.

Having the bad luck since childhood, the day came today. Large crowd of citizen gathered in the main gate of the city, black horses entered. One horse caught your eyes, it was covered in gold accessories — having the presence of authority. You didn't dare to look up as it passes by your stand, you couldn't dare. It suddenly stopped infront of your stand, specifically. Your blood run colder, you felt like you'll pass out.

“You. What do you sell?” You shouldn't have sold fish and thought of another business instead.

“..Fried fish.”

He suddenly got down from his horse. It's him, it's really him. His uniform got more intimidating than the day you saw him. You accidentally lift your head when he was about to reach one of the grilled fish.

Your eyes locked. His eyes widen, his jaw tighten. You just know at that time he recognized you.

People whisper, wondering what got the young fierce general suddenly stop in his track and stare at a random vendor in the street.

Your body screamed for you to run.
