Dawn of Tomorrow Welcome to Dawn of Tomorrow, which is basically a sci-fi series I am working on. This exists primarily as a way for me to cycle between my different series. Instead of sticking to just one, I rotate between them, and this is one of those projects. So, this is Dawn of Tomorrow.

Basic Plot of Dawn of Tomorrow This takes place in a post-human era, set roughly 10 million years in the future. By that time, the human race had managed to colonize multiple worlds throughout the galaxy, mostly unopposed, since humanity was the only sentient race within the Milky Way.

As a result, humanity was able to conquer most parts of the Milky Way Galaxy.

However, humanity did not go unscathed. Due to time dilation, humans began to evolve, either because of natural planetary environments, genetic manipulation, or simply technological advancement. The original humans, in the setting of Dawn of Tomorrow, are essentially the universal equivalent of precursor civilizations.

The human race has gone extinct, but humanity evolved into several different species across the galaxy.

How This Works Because of this, you can be whatever you want at this point. Humans are extinct. You can look human, but you would technically be a different iteration that evolved elsewhere. You can say you’re from another planet, another branch of humanity, or something entirely different.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy Dawn of Tomorrow. The Haimin of Shuijing

A Post-Human Amphibious Lineage

Field: Evolutionary Xenology, Post-Human Biology Region of Origin: Planet Shuijing Ancestry: Terran Homo sapiens (East Asian colonial population) Abstract

The Haimin are a fully amphibious post-human species native to the oceanic world Shuijing. Descended from Chinese colonial settlers during the Great Colonization Boom, the Haimin arose through extensive self-directed genetic modification followed by long-term evolutionary divergence. Over approximately ten million years, the population transitioned from baseline humans into a biologically distinct species adapted to extreme humidity, aquatic respiration, and high-predation environments. This paper outlines their evolutionary history, physiology, reproductive biology, and ecological constraints within the broader galactic context.

  1. Historical Background

Shuijing was colonized during the Great Colonization Boom by a Chinese consortium intending to establish an energy-resource extraction world. Initial surveys underestimated planetary conditions. Shuijing proved to be predominantly oceanic, with limited swamp-based landmasses, persistent high humidity, and dense amphibious megafauna.

Atmospheric moisture levels were sufficiently extreme that early colonists developed a fatal respiratory condition colloquially termed waterlung, caused by prolonged exposure to near-saturated air resulting in fluid accumulation within the lungs. Terraforming efforts were abandoned due to insufficient equipment and the ecological risk posed to native amphibious species.

Faced with extinction, the colonists initiated large-scale genetic self-modification rather than environmental alteration. 2. Evolutionary Transition

Initial genetic interventions focused on survivability: improved moisture tolerance, dermal respiration, and aquatic mobility. These changes were culturally normalized and biologically reinforced over successive generations.

Over a ten-million-year period, the population diverged entirely from baseline humanity. While retaining warm-blooded metabolism and limited hair growth, all other aspects of anatomy and physiology shifted toward an amphibious configuration. Genetic analysis confirms that modern Haimin remain derived from Homo sapiens, though they are no longer biologically human by most classification standards. 3. Morphology and Physiology 3.1 External Characteristics

Haimin are superficially humanoid in overall body plan but display the following distinguishing features:

Green to blue-green skin pigmentation

Sharp, keratinous claws

Fin-like external ear structures

Subdermal gill systems located beneath the ears

At a distance, they may be mistaken for humans; close examination reveals extensive divergence. 3.2 Respiratory System

Haimin respiration differs fundamentally from human pulmonary systems. Their lungs function analogously to amphibian lungs, supplemented by:

Cutaneous respiration, enabled by high environmental humidity

Branchial respiration, allowing underwater breathing via gills

This dual system permits survival both on land and underwater, provided sufficient moisture is present. 3.3 Auditory Perception

Haimin lack conventional eardrum-based hearing. Instead, their fin-like ears function as highly sensitive vibrational receptors. Sound is perceived as mechanical vibration transmitted through these fins, allowing Haimin to “feel” spoken language and environmental noise rather than hear it acoustically. 4. Reproductive Biology and Sexual Dimorphism 4.1 Sexual Dimorphism

Haimin exhibit extreme sexual dimorphism:

Females are significantly larger and physically dominant

Males are smaller, lighter, and less robust

This dimorphism is directly linked to developmental nutrition rather than genetics alone. 4.2 Reproductive Strategy

Female Haimin are capable of asexual reproduction, with male fertilization remaining optional. Eggs are stored internally within specialized mammary structures and periodically released into aquatic environments.

Egg release occurs every few weeks. Failure to do so results in egg degradation or premature hatching, posing severe health risks to the female.

Once released, eggs hatch into tadpoles that exhibit aggressive feeding behavior, including cannibalism. Mortality rates are extremely high, an adaptive response to Shuijing’s hostile ecology.

A single female may release up to 50 million eggs per reproductive cycle, with lifetime output reaching trillions. 4.3 Mate Selection

Although unnecessary for reproduction, male fertilization is culturally and biologically significant. Allowing a male to contribute genetic material is considered a sacred act, symbolizing emotional attachment and the voluntary continuation of a male lineage in a system where it is otherwise nonessential. 5. Developmental Sex Determination

Haimin sex is determined during the tadpole stage based on nutrient availability:

High nutrient intake results in female development

Low nutrient intake, often involving opportunistic cannibalism, results in male development

This mechanism ties sex determination directly to environmental success.

Female body mass and adipose reserves function as visible indicators of social and economic status. Well-nourished females are associated with wealth and success, while undernourished females are stigmatized. 6. Social Consequences of Biology

Males, being smaller and fewer in number, occupy a socially vulnerable position. Limited access to resources often results in social marginalization. In rare cases where males obtain sufficient nutrition post-development, partial feminization occurs, improving social standing. 7. Hybridization and Genetic Policy

Haimin are biologically compatible with multiple non-Haimin species. Inter-species reproduction is culturally encouraged to increase genetic diversity and mitigate long-term evolutionary stagnation. 8. Environmental Constraints and Technology

Due to their reliance on moisture-based respiration, Haimin are poorly suited to dry or frozen environments.

To mitigate this limitation, Haimin developed aqua rebreathers, devices worn around the gill structures that extract moisture from the surrounding air.

Effective in humid or temperate environments

Ineffective in arid deserts without manual water input

Nonfunctional in frozen environments, where internal water freezes and causes suffocation

As a result, Haimin populations remain geographically constrained within the greater galaxy. 9. Conclusion

The Haimin represent a clear case of intentional post-human evolution driven by environmental necessity. Their biology demonstrates the long-term consequences of coupling genetic modification with extreme ecological pressure. While superficially humanoid, their physiology, reproduction, and social structures place them firmly outside traditional human classification.

Their continued survival beyond Shuijing remains dependent on technological mediation, reinforcing the close relationship between biology and environment in post-human civilizations.
