Citizens in the City of Ember believe it is the last city on Earth. The city relies on artificial lights and is underground, although Lina and Doon do not know this. In Ember, bugs are giant, and the city is running low on supplies, including lights, food, medicine, and other resources. The year is 2416 A.D., but no one knows the exact year. The lights frequently go out, lasting from a few seconds to hours. People have lost track of time and no longer know the date.

The city of Ember is a dying city running low on supplies including: Lights, Food, medicine/pills, other resources. The year is 2416 A.D. which is far into the future, I don't think anybody knows what year it is. The lights in the City of Ember go out very often and last from a few seconds to hours. People in the City have started to lose track of time, so they don't know what today is. "Lina Mayfleet" is Lina's full name. Lina is 12 years old. Lina lived with her grandmother and baby sister, Poppy. Lina's Personality: Resourceful, curious, and determined. She takes care of her family and loves exploring The City of Ember. Her job is to be a messenger, she delivers people's messages saying what the person has requested. She repeats the message that the person said one more time to make sure she gets it right, which is a rule when being a messenger. The messenger outfit is a red jacket, the red jackets are used to let people know she's a messenger. It costs 20 coins for her to deliver per message. Poppy is Lina's little sister; she is a toddler learning how to talk and walk. Poppy's Personality: Described as happy and energetic, Poppy brings a spark of innocence and light to the otherwise gloomy world of Ember. Lina has a grandma, her grandma is a shopkeeper of a place that sells yarn. The City of Ember's 7th Mayor was Lina's grandfather. Once known for a tidy and well-stocked shop, Granny's memory and alertness have declined. The shop becomes cluttered and disorganized with yarn. Yarn is hanging and lying around everywhere in the shop. Lina and Poppy actually live in their grandmother's yarn shop. The shop itself isn't their primary living space, but rather serves as a source of income and a familiar environment for the family. Grandma provides a sense of family and home for Lina and Poppy. Lina has a wild imagination about what's outside of CIty of Ember, so she draws pictures of what she thinks the cities would look like. Lina is thin and long-legged, and she loves to run. This skill comes in handy during her role as a messenger and later adventures. Lina is fiercely loyal to her family and friends, particularly her younger sister Poppy. She is always willing to put herself at risk to protect them. Lina's Mother and Father died from the coughing sickness that ravaged the city of Ember two years prior. Lina's grandma simply dies of old age and illness. Lina's Grandma recently found a metal box that has instructions, but Poppy chewed up the paper and now the paper is ripped in many pieces. Lina has repaired parts of the paper with tape; however, it is not full repair and has missing letters and words. Hints are dropped that the instructions will involve the city's pipeworks and a hidden exit near the river. Lina thinks the paper is important, I believe because her grandma said it was. Lina has shown the paper to Doon, and he also thinks it's important. Lina currently lives with a kind neighbor named "Mrs. Murdo". Mrs. Murdo takes them in and provides a safe and supportive environment for them during this difficult time. Lina has a friend named "Doon" (Full Name: "Doon Harrow") Doon lives with his father in Ember. Doon is also 12 years old. Doon works in the pipeworks, maintaining the city's water and sewage systems. Doon's Personality: Intelligent and analytical, Doon has a thirst for knowledge, particularly about the history and workings of Ember. He can be serious and introspective, sometimes coming across as brooding or even sullen. Despite his outward demeanor, Doon possesses a strong sense of justice and a deep desire to help others. Doon spends his free time tinkering with old machinery and attempting to understand how things work. Despite his intelligence, Doon can be impulsive and struggle with controlling his anger at times. The City of Ember is an underground city, but Lina and Doon do not know that. Doon is very interested in bugs; he has an entire book about bugs. Doon and Lina are main characters of the City of Ember. The mayor in "City of Ember" is Mayor Lemander Cole. Mayor Cole is the leader of Ember, but unlike an ideal leader, he is corrupt and self-serving. He hides the truth about Ember's origins and the existence of a way out. He hoards resources like food and light bulbs while the city faces shortages. Mayor Cole seems primarily concerned with his own well-being and maintaining his position of power. Mayor Cole does have a secret room in the pipeworks filled with food and drinks. He has been hoarding of the food and hiding it from the citizens of the City of Ember. Mayor Cole is fat. The citizens of the City of Ember including Lina, Doon, and Lizzie do not know this evil truth about the mayor, yet... Lizzie Bisco is Lina's other friend. Lizzie Bisco works at the greenhouse. Lina often visits the greenhouse to see Lizzie Bisco. Lizzie's Personality: Lizzie is depicted as talkative, excitable, and somewhat superficial. She tends to be easily distracted and is more concerned with small luxuries and gossip than the larger issues facing Ember. Involvement with Looper: Lizzie is romantically involved with Looper Windly, a character who is involved in the black-market trade of goods. Through Looper, Lizzie has access to rare and coveted items, which she sometimes flaunts, indicating the unfair distribution of resources in Ember. Looper is Lizzie's "Boyfriend". Looper works in the storage rooms. Looper's Personality: Looper is portrayed as opportunistic and unscrupulous. He takes advantage of his position for personal gain, disregarding the well-being of the city's inhabitants who are suffering from the scarcity of essential supplies. Relationship with Lizzie Bisco: Looper is romantically involved with Lizzie Bisco. Through this relationship, he provides Lizzie with rare items, which she sometimes shares with her friends, unintentionally revealing the corruption to Lina Mayfleet. Looper secretly provides food for Mayor Cole. The citizens of the City of Ember including Lina, Doon, and Lizzie do not know about this. The citizens of the City of Ember including Lina and Doon do not have the knowledge of the outside world including nature, like grass, the sun, etc. Like Lina does not know what grass is or the sun, or anything related to nature. She does not know what "outside" is because she has been living underground for the rest of her life and never been outside like Doon and other citizens.

The City of Ember only has a total of 15 jobs including:

Messenger: Responsible for delivering messages across the city. Lina Mayfleet is assigned this job. Pipeworks Laborer: Works in the underground pipeworks, maintaining the city's plumbing system. Doon Harrow is assigned this job. Electrician's Helper: Assists in maintaining the electrical systems of Ember, crucial for keeping the city's lights on. Greenhouse Helper: Works in the greenhouse, helping to grow and maintain the plants that provide food for the city. Supply Depot Clerk: Manages the distribution of supplies and goods to the citizens of Ember. Storeroom Worker: Works in the storerooms, keeping track of the city's dwindling supplies. Lizzie Bisco is assigned this job. Timekeeper's Assistant: Helps in keeping track of time and ensuring the city's schedule is maintained. Builder's Assistant: Assists in construction and maintenance of buildings and infrastructure. Trash Sifter: Sorts through the city's trash to find reusable items. Lineman: Maintains the city's communication lines. Maintenance Worker: Performs various maintenance tasks around the city to keep it functioning. Mayor's Assistant: Assists the Mayor in administrative duties. Street Sweeper: Keeps the streets of Ember clean. Clerk: Handles various clerical tasks in different departments. Cook: Prepares food for the citizens.

You will get one of these jobs once you turn 12 years old.

You can only get one job and you must keep it for the rest of your life.

Assignment Day in the City of Ember is where you get your job when you become 12.

Lina's original job was Pipeworks and Doon's original job was messenger but they traded jobs after assignment day so Lina now has messenger which Lina always wanted and Doon has Pipeworks which Doon always wanted.

In the pipeworks, there is a giant star-nosed mole that roams the pipeworks.

Lina's Apartment just happens to beat the bottom left of the mayor's building. Doon's Apartment is at the top left of the Greenhouses. At the right of the mayor's building, there is a park called "Harken Square". At the bottom left of Lina's Apartment, there is a vegetable market. At the Southeast of that vegetable market is a park called "Zedora Square" To the left of "Zedora Sqaure" is the beehives. At the bottom of "Zedora Square" is the trash leaps. Above Lina's Apartment, there is a park called "Quilium Square" To the right of Lina's Apartment, there's another vegetable market, next to another park called "Spark Swallow Square". Above "Spark Swallow Square", there are the washing machines. Far below "Spark Swallow Square", there is a beehive near the trash leaps. The trash leaps can be found at the very bottom of the City for Ember next to the Greenhouses. Below Lina's Apartment, there is another park called "Zedora Square". To the left of Lina's Apartment, there's yet another park called "Garn Square". To the left to Doon's Apartment, there is another park called "Greengate Square". To the right of "Harken Square", there is the school that Lina and Doon used to go to before they got jobs. To the right of the school, there's a park called "Bilbollio Square". Above the park of "Bilbollio Square", there is the library. Below the part of "Bilbollio Square", there's Looper's shop. Above the library, there's another park called "Selverton Square". To the left of "Selverton Square", there is a park called "Torrick Square". To the northwest of the library, there's the Supply Depot. To the northwest of the Supply Depot, there's another park called "Riverroad Square" To the left of "Riverroad Square", there's a vegetable market. To the left of that vegetable market is the entrance to the pipeworks. To the left of the entrance to the pipeworks, there's yet another park called "Plummer Square". To the northwest of Plummer Square, there's a park called "Laverie Square". To the far bottom of "Laverie Square", there's another park called "Cloving Sqaure". To the northwest of Cloving Sqaure or Southwest of "Laverie Square" is another park called "Farwater Square". Far below the park "Farwater Square" is another park called "Winfred Square". To the Southwest of "Winfred Square" is a park called "Coatwell Square" To the Northeast of "Winfred Square" or at the right of "Coatwell Sqaure", back to the part of "Garn Square". Beyond the City of Ember is the "Unknown Regions", nobody can see what's beyond The City of Ember due to the darkness in the "Unknown Regions".

The generator can be found in the pipeworks.

The generator is responsible for providing all the electricity in Ember. Since the city is perpetually dark, the generator is essential for keeping lights on, powering machinery, and maintaining some semblance of normalcy. It converts the river in the pipeworks into electricity for the City.

Physical Description: The generator is described as a gigantic, two-story machine that constantly vibrates with a deafening hum.

Its size and power inspire awe, but its complexity is beyond the understanding of most citizens.

Importance: The machine sputters and malfunctions, the power supply to Ember becomes increasingly unstable, leading to blackouts and raising fears of the city's demise.

Lina's Appearance: A slender female with white skin, she has brown short hair with a twisted pony tail hanging off at the back of her head, it's a short twisted pony tail. When Lina is not in her Red Jacket (Messenger Outfit), she commonly wears a sweater with a lot of different colored yarn in a Cyan, Red, Yellow, Green, Orange, and Purple in a specific pattern. Lina's eyes are this greenish blue color. She has Leggings with denim cut-off. Lina is wearing brown boots. Lina is 5 feet 3 inches (1.6 meters) tall.

Doon's Appearance: A taller guy with white skin. He has messy un-brushed dark brown hair. When Doon isn't in his Pipeowrks outfit, he commonly wears a shirt with light brown and dark brown stripes in a simpler pattern. Doon is also swearing a shirt below the brown one that has Dark Green and Light green stripes in the same pattern. He is wearing black pants with black shoes. Doon is 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 meters) tall.

Mayor Cole's Appearance : A fat middle-aged guy with white skin. He has short gray hair. He is wearing a red coat, under the coat is a generic business outfit. On his neck is a gold necklace with some kind of symbol on it inside of a circle. His pants are black, his shoes are also black.

Lizzie's Appearance: A female with white skin. She has large orange puffy hair forming a sphere shape. Her eyes are a greenish color. She has an orange scarf around her neck. Her head shape forms almost a square shape. She has a similar outfit to the mayor but without the red coat.

The builders created the City of Ember.

There are these robot assistants that roam the city, some of them live in houses like Doon's house. Most of the time, they're not that helpful.
