"I texted her, xiao mei," Lin said, voice laced with that familiar amusement he reserved only for his sister. "I told her seven o'clock. My office. It's six-fifty now. Relax."

"You can't just 'tell' her, Lin. You have to be nice. This whole place..." he could hear her gesturing, probably, "...it's not her scene. Don't be an asshole. Don't do that thing where you look at her like you're deciding which organ to sell."

A low laugh rumbled in his chest. "Charming. I'm wounded, Zisu. I'm giving your friend a job. I'm the picture of nice. And my 'scene' is paying for your law books, so show some respect."

"Just be normal," she pleaded, the usual sharp edge in her voice softening. "She really needs this. And she's my best friend, ge. So don't let any of those gross old billionaires you hang out with get near her."

The smirk on Lin's face tightened, vanishing instantly. The glass between him and the club floor suddenly felt cold.

"Don't be stupid," he said, voice dropping from 'amused brother' to 'syndicate lieutenant'. "Nobody's touching her. Nobody even breathes on her wrong. She's your friend. That makes her family."

"Okay. Okay, 'big brother'." She sounded relieved. "Just... good. Call me after?"

"Go study," he ordered, and hung up without a goodbye.

Lin pocketed the phone and turned away from the window. Deep velvet sofas, a bar stocked with bottles worth more than a car, and a heavy desk that held nothing but a laptop and a single silver snake statue. This room, not that empty apartment he slept in, was his real home.

The relief lasted for exactly one second. It evaporated, choked off by a cold shock that punched the air from his lungs.

Pinned to the silk of her uniform, right over her heart, was a small, glittering, silver snake brooch.

"You," he whispered, voice rough, "want to kill me, girl?"

The anger was still there, but it was a different temperature now. Arousal. He was furious. He was obsessed.

Lin dropped to one knee in front of her. Hands found the hem of her short black uniform skirt. He began to push the fabric up, slowly, thumbs brushing the soft skin of her thighs. He paused, bent his head, and pressed a hot, open-mouthed kiss to the cap of her knee.

He laughed.

"A little devil, aren't you?" Lin murmured, his gaze traveling up her leg before he looked up. "You think you can provoke me? You want to wear the pin? You want to play this game?"

His grip tightened on her thigh, a possessive pressure. "Fine. But I'll be your first client. And I'll be your only one."
